Beware of spoilers: This is a solid new entry into the DC animated universe. There is so much good stuff in this animated movie that I had to rewatch it twice before writing this review to make sure I wasn't just overly excited about seeing Jon Kent and Damian Wayne teamed up like they are in the comics this is based on. As a fan of that comic series I was very amped for this movie, and I think overall they did a very fine job of bringing the fun and adventure of those comics to the TV. Damian is exactly like he in the comics, even down to crazy hair style. Jon is the bright optimist like his father, and he is the perfect foil for the cocky Damian. Unfortunately, the movie does Jon a huge disservice by shoving what is essentially 12 comics into 15 minutes; so, Jon gets powers, finds out his dad is Superman, and he is half alien all before we get to Gotham. It's rushed to say the least, and that is my one big complaint. Still, there is sooo much to like that even that major quibble is overlooked. Like the comics, Battle of the Super Sons is fun, and because it's fun it includes a lot of "fun" things from Superman lore, like his giant FOS key (lol), Krypto, and lots of Smallville. The animation style even has a bit of a retro feel during some sequences and that works in the movie's favor because it's a fun, adventurous movie. Also, my hats off to the writing team because there are some very funny one liners that make this humorous and entertaining. AND...they gave my favorite ace reporter, Lois Lane, something to do. Heck! I would say this is one of the best Lois Lane portrayals in a long, long time. I love her as a character and when she is done right, my Superman fan-girl screams with delight! Overall, everything about Battle of the Super Sons is solid, from the animation, to the story, the voice acting, and just great characterization for JK and DW. 10/10 Highly recommended.

A rare miss for DC Animated, this movie just doesn't really have anything going for it. We start off with yet ANOTHER version of the explosion of Krypton, only this time we get to see it in 3D Computer Animation! Yuck. The animation in this movie looks straight awful. We're talking 2016 Netflix Berzerk awful, the character animations look wooden, the backgrounds look like 2000's video game renderings and the colors are rendered so poorly that they provide little to no texture definition. Maybe once the story picks up I might not notice anymore, or so I mistakenly thought. The plot is just a boring dive into the introduction of Johnathan Kent, son of Clark and Lois, who gets to be our 1st annoying kid hero of the story, as he explores the awakening of his new super powers, but not to worry because he'll soon be joined by second annoying kid that EVERYONE already doesn't like, Damian Wayne, so we can do yet ANOTHER DC Animated movie focusing around his anti-social behavior that we've seen in like half a dozen recent DC Animated movies. They have to save the Justice League from being taken over by a mindcontrolling parasitic starfish (same plot as Young Justice season 1 only worse) which means they'll have to go up against the adult heroes in some of the worst animated action you've ever seen in a DC animated movie. It's a plot you've seen before with other more interesting characters, that was done way better already than this movie tries to do it. We have to spend literally 15 minutes going to the Fortress of Solitude to be chased by super powered Krypto who again is so badly animated that it's hard to not laugh at how horrible it looks. There are some cool positives like Clark's relationship with his son that gets explored early on, or the little hints as to Clark and Bruce's mutual understanding of one another that barely gets explored, but these are all tiny little nuggets mixed in amongst the barely watchable garbage that is the rest of this movie. Recommendation: skip this one and read the relevant comics, or just watch Young Justice and the Teen Titans animated movies that are already available on HBO Max.
