Woody Woodpecker was a beloved cartoon for many. It was a mainstay of weekday cartoons for many New Yorkers and Americans in the 90's. Woody is essentially a bird with human emotions and speak. He lives in a forest that is in danger from an outside threat. Can Woody and his friend(s) come together to save his world? Having little to no information to go on, I took the time to see this movie. I went in blind; no reviews, not even a trailer I saw. What could go wrong? Well everything and that is a GOOD thing. The movie clearly had a smaller budget and some amateur actors, but the main attraction, Woody, breaks the wall; the 4th wall. This movie was essentially, what if Deadpool was a young teen bird in the 90's...what rules and conventions would he break? Woody Woodpecker breaks the fourth Wall on many occasions, in an attempt to add humor and commentary to scenes and it works mostly. He is rude and crude with mischievous tendencies like all young boys tend to be. Loving parents who have sons should watch this movie with their kids and teens. Is the movie a Masterpiece? No! Is it fun and entertaining? Yes Critics will trash it due to the MACHO nature and not being pro Liberal or feminism...but if you are a man or teenager or even a child, you will love this! SOY BOYS NEED NOT APPLY! Movie has heart and humor. I would rate it an 8.5. Fun, fast moving, meaningful; a throwback to the 90's children's movies where kids have fun at the expense of the adults who in the end, learn a valuable lesson of life and love.

Lots of reviews are dumping on this movie but as a kid growing up I remember Woody being just as energetic, goofy & ambitious as he was in the movie. It was a fun filled movie all the way around even if it weren't to "Your" liking.

The ONLY joke appears in the cast list. The father's name is Lance Walters, a play on Walter Lantz, the creator of Woody Woodpecker. I paid $1100 for my ticket, but it did come with a flight to Rio. I should have slept. The movie is another fine example of why offering tax credits for making movies is immoral. I feel, as a Canadian taxpayer, as if I personally approved the production of this movie. I didn't. Woody Woodpecker is apparently (and inexplicably) popular in Brazil, to whom this movie is targeted. I used to watch Woody Woodpecker reruns as a college student. They were a source of ironic laughs because they were pretty crappy ripoffs of Bugs Bunny, but with a singularly unappealing lead character. Where Bugs was a jerk to people who imposed on him, defending his turf from people who wanted to pave over his rabbit hole or eat him or shoot him or whatever, Woody was just a jerk. This movie gives him a sympathetic cause with a green environmentalist tinge, but it is bereft of any creativity. There is the troubled father son relationship, the bullied kid, every cliche you could possibly imagine. And Woody? He does fart and poop jokes, because the people responsible have no ability to come up with anything the slightest bit interesting. It would be as offensive a treatment of a beloved childhood character as what Jim Carrey did to the Grinch or Mike Meyers did to the Cat in the Hat, except for the fact that the original Woody was never beloved. He was just a jerk. So who cares? Well, the taxpayers of Canada should.
