Interesting trailer. Focuses on the house and wants to fool you. The house which would be interesting is barely showed. They say 300 rooms and stuff and they show 4 maybe 5 at best. Jump scares are poorly executed and it is not something that works in horror movies these days. It could have been an interesting one. I thought it is going to be similar to the movie Rose Red but it is far far far away from that. As I know it has higher budget and still it sucks. The story is awful. Really terrible one. Directing sucks, cinematography sucks even more. The guy I don't even know his name is bad. He is not a good actor. So bad maybe I'll change my 4 stars to 3. I like every kind of movie. From horror to romantic so there is really no genre that I can't enjoy if it is good. I've seen over 2000 movies, rated about 1900 here. That's how you should consider my current 4 stars.

This movie shows a much more spacious house. Back then people were shortrr, thinner, and smaller. Sarah was only 4"10' herself. The house is very cramped and hallways and passageways are very narrow. A lot of it is unsafe so you only get to see a small portion. The stairrisers are only an inch or so high and many lead into the ceilings. Very creepy. The story is told, she built the house because she believed if she slept in a different room every night and passageways lead to nowhere, ghosts (of victims of her father's guns) would be confused and never reach her and do her harm. Apparently, that's not quite true, but makes a good ghost story.

The infamous Winchester House is not the main focus of this movie, the Winchester legacy is. The 'true' story of how the house came to be is explored, all the while throwing in cheap jump-scares at every misplaced given opportunity. Such a wealth of source material has been taken, regurgitated & smooshed into a 1 hour and 40 minute snooze-fest. Helen Mirren, a fine actress, is terribly miscast - she does better with British roles. All-in-all a missed opportunity of a film that could have been so much more.

I expected a bit more as, well it's Helen Mirren. I heard people slamming this but it isn't all that bad, it's not fast paced but is well crafted overall. Some very eerie moments to satisfy the horror fans but I wouldn't call it a horror movie exactly.

I expected little from this movie and walked in with low expectations of a few shocks and jumps. So much more... so very much more! What I got was a quality horror movie that was uplifted with an amazing love story of emotions, regret and fear. More amazing was that the authentic emotional payout came without syrupy romantic flashback nonsense. Who expects a shotgun blast to be romantic trigger? The characters elevated the genre beyond anything in recent memory. I am a movie 'tweener; mixed genres are extremely difficult to pull off, so I appreciate them much more. Think Ghost and The Conjuring in a historical period piece. The story of a broken man made whole by facing fear is powerful. "Winchester" is a perfect example of "realistic" love and loss and horror. The love story hits unexpectedly like a shotgun blast.

Gosh-dang this was bad. Not scary at all. Horrible sets and costumes. Terrible acting. Not even a good kinda bad. Just so stupid.

When making a horror movie with the most haunted house ever you make a dull boring not scary at all movie.... Add more thrills and chills instead of what this movie is.

I had high hopes for this film with the actors involved and the famous story behind it. But although the film turned out to be a disappointment, it also felt like that was the best it could be. There would have only been so many ways to make use of the ghost stories to make it an interesting plot for a movie and I respect the effort put in by the filmmakers. Everything looks very well done, effects are great and acting was great. There was just something missing from this picture for it to be memorable. This is the only time I can remember that I had absolutely nothing to say about a movie after leaving the theater. The car ride home was dead silence.
