When I started watching this movie a couple of weeks ago, I kept trying to remember if I'd seen it before. Elements seemed familiar, like the thing with the library books, but could they be familiar from a *different* movie?
I never figured it out. This coming-of-age romance just drifted along, not especially interesting, not especially not, always seeming *maybe* familiar.
I watched about two-thirds, was never especially interested, and then stopped. And I still don't know if I'd seen it before. But I can say that much of it has already faded from my mind.
I can see I'm an outlier here. People *love* this movie. But I think the main contribution this film made to the history of Studio Ghibli was as an inspiration for the -sort-of-a-sequel-but-not-really The Cat Returns, which is one of the few really good non-Miyazaki Ghibli films.
As for Whisper of the Heart, it's perfectly watchable and that's pretty much it.

As an Anime lover this movies was on my list to watch. Didn't know at all what to expect at first but it turned really awesome.
High school romance in the stile of the 80s lets say. Story is well developed from the beginning to the end. You can see how the characters are evolving and it is charming to see the m fall in love. The whole movie has a fascinating scenery even though its only an ordinary town. Music is also really good. I can assure you once watched it will leave a mark. And if you later on watch it with someone (i.e. girlfirend/boyfriend) I wouldn't be surprised if he/she asks you to watch it again. For me it is one of my favorites and deserves 10 stars (even more if they were available). I would rate it in my top 10 Animes together with Kiki's delivery service and My Neighbour Totoro. Enjoy :_)

A few years back I went through a Ghibli phase where I wanted to watch every Ghibli, or Miyazaki-related, movie I could get my hands on.
I had never heard of Whisper of the Heart, but at that time in my life this movie was exactly what I needed. The main character is very relatable on many levels and I felt an instant connection to the situation she, herself, was going through in her life.
I saw another review for this movie titles "The Don't Get More Beautiful" and I could not agree more. Whisper of the Heart (and its spin-off, The Cat Returns) should be on your list of movies to watch if you not only love anime, Ghibli and coming of age tales, but if you enjoy top notch story telling and relatable characters.

I love all Ghibli movies but this one felt very week for me. The world building isn't anything special and the characters are pretty bland and forgetable. I was interesting for first 20 minutes but then I just got bored.

Not a fully realized ending, but a good depiction on creativity, I related to the protagonist.

Whisper of the Heart is a film that works on more levels than that of instant satisfaction of cheep emotions and indulgance in nearly absurd animation quality. It delivers raw, specific events of daily life in a context of high significance. Things that at first glanze appear small or even ridiculous build up inner tensions and you can almost feel the life-like unplanned developments of each character. It is quite obvious that the script isn't entirely finished before production starts, as Miyasaki (joint screenwriter) admits, and perhaps this is one of the real strengths of Studio Ghibli animation. This is the way Tarkovsky, Cassavetes and Bergman likes to work if possible, as it is the way real life works; no premises, no planned endings, no though-up characters.
I believe Whisper, along with Totoro, Spirited Away and Fireflies stands up there with the greatest achievements of cinema. That good.
