This film is absolutely FILLED with scenes that do not drive the narrative. As a matter of fact the film seems like a 30 minute family drama padded with 60 minutes of meaningless vignettes.

This family-oriented film tells the story of two young sisters who are abandoned and raised by their grandparents. It is a heartwarming, and sometimes humorous, story that kept my interest and had a good message of forgiveness. Be sure to watch the lower left corner to see when the time period changes, as it jumps back and forth between 1967 and 1996.

It's hard to find wholesome movies with a good plot and wonderful characters, and I love this movie because it had both. I would like to have heard a little more about the fight the sisters had and whether Evangeline came home for Ruby's funeral since it wasn't mentioned in the movie. Other than that, it was an excellent movie.

I enjoyed the film. The well-known actors gave solid performances and I thought the rest of the cast performed well. To be honest, I read the book several years ago and liked it, but didn't love it; something seemed to be missing for me. The actors put flesh on the characters and brought them to life in a most satisfactory way. I was able to fill more emotionally attached. There were poignant moments but the movie stayed mostly lighthearted. There were also a few examples of turning the bad into something beautiful that appealed to me.
The soundtrack is great! I was 12 in 1967, so many memories were stirred via the music, fashion, and more included in the film. It takes place during a turbulent time in American history and has sad elements, but it was also a kinder, more simple time. The laughter, in the film and from the viewers, remind us that it's possible to keep finding joy despite heartache and misunderstandings. But the final message all should receive is the importance of family and forgiveness and the need for faith to sustain us. This is definitely a "popcorn movie" to enjoy with friends, but I believe it's worth seeing. Check it out!

A fun-filled, heartwarming film for the whole family, this movie caught my eye with it's old fashioned setting and featuring of some of my favorite actors.
Melissa Gilbert and Corbin Bernsen were excellent as Grandma Ruby and Papo, who take in sisters Juliet and Evangeline when their father goes to war in 1967. This was an engaging and well written and acted film, wholesome and heartwarming it is a feel-good movie that you can comfortably share with others, knowing that it will bring smile to their face. I had such a great time watching this one with my parents. The pacing was great, I never felt like there was a dull or stagnant moment.
This was such a fun entertaining film, I loved that it had its lighter moments as well as more serious ones, as the sisters struggle to understand what is going on around them. I was so impressed with this movie, and its wholesome winsomeness and charm, as well as its well paced plot and endearing characters. The late Cloris Leachman is a gem as Great-Grandmama, though Papo had to be my favorite! I would highly recommend this movie to fans of the popular When Calls the Heart or Little House on the Prairie.

What a joy to see Melissa Gilbert in a film. This is a slow moving story line for a movie but the acting is decent and there are some heartfelt scenes. This story covers a lot from war to death to dancing and joy. I really enjoyed the quirky characters of small town America and to see two young girls grow up together amidst hardship. This is a family film but there are scenes of war (nothing too gory) and also a scene of a person who has just passed away so just view with caution if watching with kiddos. There is a unique love story between an older couple that I thought was unique and added a lot to the film.
Overall this a decent movie. It isn't one I would watch over and over but still better than a lot of movies coming out these days.
Four Stars.

When We Last Spoke is a movie based off a book by Marci Henna. This film won awards in each of the five categories at the 2021 ICVM Crown Awards and some of these included best picture and best narrative. The movie takes place in the last 1960's in a small town called Fireside. Juliet and Evangeline ended up being raised by their grandparents, Walt and Ruby. The girl's father, James went to serve in the Vietnam War. Their mother decided at this time that she no longer wanted to raise her children. She made a decision to move back to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. While living with their grandparents' we see the girls face challenges and adventures. Along the complicated life, their great grandmother moves in with them and she is losing her memory. This movie also travels back and forth between the past and the current lives of the girls where viewers can witness the full scope of the storyline. The sister lost touch when one of the sister's kept the painful truth of the past that their mother didn't want them anymore. She left town and vowed to never return. An unexpected event causes them to reconnect.
I would recommend this awesome movie to anyone who enjoys a great family film. The film covered topics like forgiveness, healing from the past, learning to adjust to changing family structures, the importance of family, and much more. I liked how entertaining the film was and how there was a mixture of humor but also of sadness. I also loved the chemistry between the sisters and how they continued the story going from the past to the present to show the conflict and the healing they were able to experience. I immensely loved the cast in this movie and some of my favorite was Cloris Leachman (Raising Hope) and Melissa Gilbert (From Little House on the Prairie). I loved Cloris Leachman and the character she played she reminded of the same personality on Raising Hope. She added humor to the film along with in dealing with the difficult topic of dementia. This was also one of the last few films she appeared in since she passed away in January 2021. If you're looking for a clean family film, then check this one out!

An important film about love, forgiveness, family values and the strength provided by strong role models! See Melissa Gilbert transform from a child on the prairie to a MAMAW raising grandchildren during the Vietnam "war". Cloris Leachman & Corbin Bernsen were both a joy also. Watch this film with children of ALL AGES because it's a teaching moment. If you have no kids, borrow some because you might just learn some lessons yourself! 💘

Oh my. I'm feeling all the feels. I laughed, sighed, gasped, and cried (a lot) during the last hour and forty-seven minutes. When We Last Spoke overflows with love, family, friends, and the sweet spirit of forgiveness.
I enjoyed every single character in this meaningful film. The unconventional family dynamic of Walt (Popo) Ruby (Mamaw) Juliet (Rabbit) and Evangeline (Squirrel) warmed my heart.
It was fun being transported back to the music and atmosphere of the late 60s, and the southern culture and the stability of the North Star gave this story added depth and charm. I loved the actors, the acting, the humor, and the touching moments. I loved Cloris Leachman's humorous and tender moments, Corbin Bernsen as an older, gentle soul, and Melissa Gilbert as the endearing family matriarch. But I especially enjoyed Darby Camp and Chandler Head (the young girls.) They are remarkable and lovable little actors!
This sweet, nostalgic film will make you yearn to hug, call, or drive home to your loved ones.

This movie brought back memories from my childhood. I watched with my daughter and 10 yr old granddaughter and they enjoyed it just as much. I thought the actors were great as well as the storyline. I read the book first and was really looking forward to the movie.
