I am a big fan of Ray Romano, but I was very disappointed in the movie. I had really looked forward to seeing it. I thought it would be really funny, but it wasn't funny at all. The audience was very quiet, no one was laughing. Patti

Okay, I have to say I just got done watching this movie, and I can't explain how much I liked it. You honestly can't find too many films these days that make you feel as good as this one does. Sure, there are moments where the bit characters are BIT too much, and the story suffers from some predictability. However, if you are a fan of Romano or Hackman, or a fan of a movie where you end it feeling great about the time you spent, then see this movie. Romano fans will get an even bigger kick out of this movie because he is spectacular in it. It seems to have incorporated all of his personality nicely into the film. All of the main characters are just a treat to watch, especially if you get the DVD. The extras are very nice and complimentary.(Soova commercial) I can't say enough about this film, great stuff. Can't wait to see more from Romano! 9/10 rating!

This film, was by no means, good. but it wasn't that bad to be honest. There were many comical elements, and a lot of them were intentional. Ray Romano was very good, and his character was quite likable, but at the same time a complete jax. There wasn't really anything that stood out in this film, as "poor". The acting was reasonably good, the cinematography was OK, the storyline was a bit far fetched, and very predictable. But apart from that, and a few cheesy moments, this wasn't too bad. I was expecting to enjoy this film, because of it's lesser qualities, however, i found a lot more. Give it a try, it's not as bad as it looks.

The idea had possibilities. An ex US President retires to Mooseport, Maine or Vermont, I forget. He gets tangled into running for mayor. With as great an actor as Gene Hackman, this film could have been very funny indeed. But some Hollywood 'artistic' executive (read bean counter) decided to give it to a team of uninspired hacks. If I gave a cinema-appreciation course, I would force my students to sit through this film in order to learn everything that is wrong with Hollywood today. Clichés, political-correctness, the predictability and the suspense of watching mushroom grow, all of the above run amok in this movie, which is *technically* perfect, as are most Hollywood productions. But it suffers from a deadly flaw: it is excruciatingly dull and unremittingly boring, although through no fault of Gene Hackman's or of any of the other main actors, with one exception, Ray Romano, who should abandon any idea of ever acting in any kind of comedy again. Will someone please tell me *who* decides to make such films?

Ray Romano's character is the wimpiest character ever seen on celluloid. This guy is so wimpy. He is bossed by women for the entire film. He is even beat by his girlfriend many times. I bet this is supposed to be "funny". This film is not funny at all. Both Romano and Hackman characters are wimps. A bunch of annoying people constantly tell them what to do throughout the entire film. For example, the former president has to listen to a dumb boy (Fred Savage) and a dumb woman who constantly run his life. Also in the french version they gave Romano's Owen Wilson's voice. I don't know who does this voice, but this voice must be the more annoying and unfunny voice ever seen in the history of french translation. Anyway this movie was really bad. I give 1/10 to it.

and they butchered an xtc song at the end. well, i didn't really like that song all that much anyhow, but my god! what absolute trash this movie was. just garbage. not funny, totally predictable, and BORING. please note i had to watch it for work. normally i would never even look at tripe like this. how many times are studios going to force swill on us because some suit thought it would make money? please, god, MAKE THEM STOP. gene hackman--bad. ray romano--disgusting. in what universe would he ever get the girl? vile beyond reason. marcia gay harden--bad. everyone else--thankfully forgettable.

The president of United States of America Monroe "Eagle" Cole (Gene Hackman) has just retired and divorced. His wife kept their house in Baltimore, and he decides to move to the small town of Mooseport, in Maine. His arrival is the motive for a great party in Mooseport, and the local authorities invite him to be the next Mayor and he accepts the invitation. However, the simple, shy, honest and clumsy local citizen Handy Harrison (Ray Romano) had previously accepted to be the Mayor, but he declines to the position on favor of the ex-president. However, Handy decides to run for the election when Monroe invites his girlfriend for dinner. Their dispute and debates are broadcast and the place becomes a national sensation, with the press covering the movements of the candidates. "Welcome to Mooseport" is a comedy with some good moments and is not bad. Gene Hackman has another excellent performance in the role of a politician fascinated by the power. Marcia Gay Harden and the sweet Maura Tierney are also great, as usual. When the first lady (Christine Baranski) arrives in town, there are some very funny situations. The problem is the unknown actor (at least for me) called Ray Romano: the guy is horrible! He is not funny, he has a terrible accent, he is not charismatic and he has an amateurish performance in the role of Handy Harrison. With a better actor in his role, this movie could be a very good comedy. My vote is six. Title (Brazil): "Uma Eleição Muito Atrapalhada" ("A Very Confused Election")

I somehow do not get it why some don't really like this. I mean, it's meant to be a comedy. Anyone living in a small town will kind of relate to this. I may be coming from someone growing up in an urban environment, but all the excitement of someone famous coming to live in a town is always so fun and surreal. Monroe 'Eagle' Cole (Gene Hackman) had served two successful terms as the president. All he wanted to do is to enjoy his retirement. But his arrival to his hometown of Mooseport had caused some spectacle of sorts. The last thing on Monroe's mind is to run for Mayor but then he was being persuaded by the local authorities to be one. But then he also had an opponent and it's in the form of local resident Handy Harrison (Ray Romano). What was meant to be a fair fight for the mayor position had led to an all-out war of sorts, given the ex-president is meeting Handy's girlfriend Sally (Maura Tierney). It was meant to be a casual meeting between Monroe and Sally about discussing about having a pet, but the media had made it into a spectacle. Also around the same time, the former first lady Charlotte Cole (Christine Baranski) had shown up in Mooseport to support Handy to be the mayor. On the polling day, it was quite a close fight. In fact, very close. It was like no surprise who won in the end. My knowledge of small-town politics is not that wide, but then I am aware of the humour being thrown into it. It's meant to be a fun movie, and nothing else. I do kind of like it.
