I liked the beginning and the set up of the movie, however from the middle to the end stuff felt unnecessary, tacked on, and non-sensical. It ends very abruptly and out of the blue as well and it doesn't feel like a Steven Spielberg production. More like Michael Bay. I wish it was written better and included more heart.

The 2005 version of War of the Worlds is the best on screen adaptation of the H. G. Wells novel (I haven't seen the Fox/Canal TV version.) This version of a ground view of an alien invasion as seen through the eyes of a struggling man. Tom Cruise goes against type by playing an ordinary Working Joe and a bad father as he gets caught up with the extraordinary events. Steven Spielberg knows how to make a popcorn film and his version of story does have excellent CGI effects and destruction. The film came across as a Spielbergian attempt of a horror film because there was panic and dread when the Tripods approach, social order breaks down, and characters have to hide from the aliens. It makes War of the Worlds more terrifying.
