Victor is a failure; a poor barber who has come to despise poverty with a vengeance. There had to be a way to make a big score, and live to enjoy it. Fate intervenes when Victor's new landlady, Thelma, turns out to be a rich old widow. Victor wastes no time in charming the old girl and they fall madly in love. The only thing crimping Victor's style is Betty, a sweet young nurse. Though Victor is torn between the beautiful young nurse and the beautiful old money, he can only have one. Of course there's Don, an alcoholic extortionist and Victor's best friend, who thinks it's a great idea for Victor to marry the old girl. He generously offers to help - for a piece of the action. Disaster strikes when Thelma's niece Lucy shows up. She's determined to break up the courtship - along with Victor's head. They'd all better get moving, because the old lady's feeling under the weather - and there's a hurricane coming!

"Victor's Big Score" is a perfect example of how budgetary restrictions have no impact on how well-made or funny a film is. This is a hilarious gem, and I strongly recommend checking it out.

I remember seeing "Victor's Big Score" a few years back. It was very funny, with a distinct flair for visual comedy, but the humor was very dark. If you like your comedy black, which I do, this film is a riot. Though the entire cast was fun, the old lady, Thelma, really stole the show. The story was colorful, eccentric, but more than a little strange. For those who take their comedy left-of-center, I highly recommend this film.

Characters out of Damon Runyon run into characters out of Norman Rockwell in this twisted little comedy. Lazy barber Victor Hertz, ever the angler, bridges both worlds on a quest for love and riches. How it shakes out is one of the funniest journeys ever depicted. Handsome looking film features great turns from Seth Barrish, Elaine Wood, Eve Annenberg, Joe Biscone and several featured players. This is a perfect date event. A technical note: I attended a screening of the newly restored version of the film. The 4K restoration is gorgeous, with exceptional picture and sound.

I saw Victor's Big Score when it first premiered in Boston in 1992, and was more than pleasantly surprised by the film. Its humor is black, yet it has a heart of pure gold at its center. The characters are complex and wonderfully drawn, the plot inventive and surprising. The cast, while relative unknowns, shines brightly. This is obviously due to both the hilarious script and the careful attention Director Brian Anthony paid to crafting the multi-layered performances. I would recommend this film to anyone without hesitation, and hope I can get it on video one of these days.

A very funny film that should be seen more often. I screened it at the Houston International film festival about five years ago-it was a riot! Extreme black humor was coupled with very funny sight gags. The cast of unknowns were first rate, with the old lady a stand-out. This film was obviously low budget, but handsomely produced and well directed. I spoke with the director a couple of years ago and learned "Victor's big score" suffered a typical Hollywood sad ending-It's intended distributed buried it. Too bad. "Victor's Big Score" deserves to be seen.

As a technician specializing in movie theaters now and then I am asked to screen a film. This is usually for either the filmmaker or production staff. Sometimes these films are just horrid but not always every now and then there is a gem. Last month I was asked to screen a 35mm print of Victor's Big Score, a film that apparently has remained unseen for two decades. I wasn't expecting it to hold my interest but it did. It is a funny movie, and while I agree with the other reviews that the old lady is great, the other players are good too, especially the actor who plays Victor. The animated scenes during the hurricane are hilarious, especially when a car/boat makes its way across a river during a raging storm. This is not a multi million dollar feature but it looked real good owing to the fact is was shot on film and never used a video inter negative. It looked so good I was surprised to find out it was shot on the super 16 format. Highly recommended.
