When Underdog the cartoon debuted in 1964, at the age of 7 I was hooked immediately. He was Top Dog (pun intended) in my book-(that is, until Batman premiered on ABC a year or so later). Even when it was clear that Disney was going to make a live-action version of the once popular Saturday morning cartoon, it was equally clear to me that it was going to be a piece of crap. Even reading the reviews in the papers seemed to confirm this. However, I made it a point to: a) never attempt to write a review unless I have seen the movie from start to finish; and b) never to spend one red cent on a movie that I'm almost certain I will hate. Thanks to YouTube I: a) am fully qualified to write this review; and b) it only cost me 84 minutes of my hard earned time. It also proves my point, namely, that this movie is not merely a piece of crap. It's a steaming pile of dog droppings. It resembles the TV series in name only, even though they almost got it right with Simon and Cad. All in all, Underdog is a huge waste of time- and money, which thankfully, I didn't have to spend. Rating: 1/2* out of *****

I'll admit that my expectations for this were not terribly high going in. I'm both a film nerd, and a dog lover, which means that I see pretty much any movie i can, and I have a soft spot for adorable dogs. I figured it would be cute, but not that good. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This movie is a clever and funny family film that I think most people will be happy to take their kids to. For the parents, there are many moments of sophisticated humor that is still appropriate for the kids. There is not an excess of bathroom humor, and the one moment that could be classified as such is still pretty down played. Mostly, this is a fun cartoony movie that provides enjoyable escapism, but still has some good lessons to teach. In one of the best scenes in the film, Underdog gives a speech that sticks it to people who abuse their animals. In light of some recent high profile animal abuse cases, it is a well timed statement. Jason Lee's voice over is spot on, and provides a humorous and enjoyable twist on the characteristics that we associate with dogs. Peter Dinklage is also good as the mad scientist. Overall, this is a children's movie you wont regret seeing.

I'm not certain were all the bad reviews on this film are coming from. I can only imagine that Die hard fans of the cartoon couldn't transition to live action. This film was loads of fun and I laughed my A$$ off. With maybe a slight change in persona for some of the characters like Bar Sinister, Riff Raff and Polly, and some major improvements on Cad, it was a good representation of taking a cartoon character to the big screen. Everyone in the theater from children to adults, liked the film. My only negs where I liked the old Bar Sinister character and maybe he was a little too different for me, also (small spoiler here) I felt Jim Belushi's character should have had more to do in the end sequence. I say if you liked the cartoon, or just like the idea of a talking super hero dog, see the film!!

They did it again: ripped off an old show's title, then destroyed the nostalgia with boring "re-imagined" stuff. The '60's cartoon was one of the funniest of its time, a good-natured satire of super hero comic books. The character was drawn as 1/2 way between animal and human, the way Mickey Mouse is. Here they use a real beagle; that's about the same as making a Mickey Mouse watch with a real rat. Most of the clever schtick that made the original show funny is missing from this film. Instead, we get a clumsy ex-police dog who's even dumber than Cad. And some pet owners who add nothing to the story. Cheesy effects (the dog-talking animation is embarrassing). Poor scripting. A stereotyped dwarf playing Simon Bar Sinister. The gravelly noise box guy they hired to voice Underdog is painful. You'd think they'd at least gotten a voice impressionist to approximate Wally Cox's humorously distinctive voice for Underdog. But no. There are, at least, a few affectionate references to the source material (such as the rhyming lines), which lift it to a 4. Only small children that love dogs may enjoy this. Everybody else should get a DVD of the original cartoon series. Watch this only in desperation.

I was able to go with two dog-loving members of my family to see Underdog last night and it was a treat. My mom and my cousin have been talking about going to see this ever since we first saw the commercial. I was the only one who remembered the cartoon, but we all think the beagle is so cute. He even rhymes when he talks, just like in the cartoon. The film was nice. All three of us liked it and the kids at the movie with us seemed excited. The actor from My Name was Earl is the voice and very funny. The dogs are adorable. If you love dogs and animal movies or liked the cartoon, you should see it. It's a fun, stress-free movie.

When I saw the trailer for Underdog with my friend, he thought it would be good while I thought it would be just mediocre. With the actual movie those were the thoughts each of us had of it since he laughed at most of it while I just sat there only occasionally chuckling. With Disney's name on it, I pretty much expected some lessons and cutesy humor that kids would eat up and make us sophisticated adults want something more...sophisticated. With a cast like Peter Dinklage, Patrick Warburton, John Slattery, James Belushi (okay, maybe not him), and the voices of Brad Garrett and Jason Lee as the title character, part of me hoped maybe some clever lines would come out of them, not so. Most of the humor is visual and not wacky-visual but more amusingly-playful-visual though the scene that Underdog does to the Garrett-voiced dog at the end made me laugh a little loud. So, like I said, this wasn't hilarious, just partly amusing. The beginning with scenes of the actual Underdog cartoons were probably the most entertaining along with some of the bloopers at the end. All in all, kids under 12 will probably enjoy this more than childless adults. P.S. I saw this with a trailer of Alvin and the Chipmunks with Lee as the live-action David Seville. I hope that isn't as mediocre as this one.

. . . . . . . . . . . . All I know is I took my four-year-old son to see this movie, and he got so caught up into it that he didn't even touch his popcorn or candy until it was halfway over ~ it was that good! This film had everything ~ talking dogs, flying dogs, flying, talking, fighting dogs. IT'S GREAT! Also, the underlying story is well acted and designed to make an impression ~ it kept MY attention. Jim Belushi is always well worth watching. And, the dog's voice was perfect... very endearing. If your kid has ever made a mistake that he's felt bad about (like my kid did when he accidentally tripped the fire alarm in a hotel), in other words, any kid will relate to this dog and the storyline. Usually, my kid will make it through about 3/4 of a movie at best before he's ready to go home, and, the second the credits flash he's jumping out of his seat and running for the door. But, with this movie, he was still sitting in his seat and looking up at the screen as the credits rolled. As a parent, I've gotta tell you, that's the best recommendation ever. He LOVED this movie; he's still talking about it. And, he wants to go back and see it again. I'm really glad I took my child to see this film! You'll be glad you took your kids, too!
