An extraordinary true story showing ordinary people facing and overcoming extraordinary challenges. Themes include: the effects of war, love, loss, family, friendship, ambition, prejudice, forgivesss, hope and triumph - masterfully presented.

Great story. Well told. Although long you get so involved in all the characters. Seemed pretty close to the real story. Inspiring guy and well played.

Not knowing anything about this movie we had no idea what the film was going to be like. It was great! The characters, the subject, the love, the hate, the loss. Very well acted, a great (true) story. Can't recommend this film highly enough and, as some other reviewer has already said, "The Keeper" really should be more widely publicised. Watch this!

Interesting film that I missed on its cinema release. I know of the ex-professional footballer, Bert Trautmann and some of his well publicised exploits. However the trouble with these biopics is you don't know fully what is true or added for artistic purposes. The film begins with Trautmann in a German Prisoner of War camp in East Lancashire, U.K. It is interesting seeing a P.O.W. film from a German perspective! Films like The Great Escape and Escape To Victory it ain't! The stadium scenes such as the old, old Wembley stadium are cleverly staged using CGI. Has some good U.K. casting including Maggie Smith. The cast is fully Anglo-German. Like Trautmanns career! A film that seems to have slipped between the goalposts, pardon the pun. Very good viewing.

Anglo-German production, TV-movie(ish); two-dimensional fare. But the amazing story and a dollop of charm, makes this a hell of a lot better than it should be. This is a straightforward historical romance. But it's well played by Kross as Trautmann, and Mavor as his wife Margaret. And Henshaw gives a typically excellent performance as plain-speaking, Northern dad. It should be terrible, but it's a really watchable film, and a very good football film to boot. The CGI recreation of 1950's football stadiums is amazing. It takes dramatic licence, but still brings home the Cup.

THE KEEPER A true story based around a German POW soldier captured in the U.K. towards the end of the war. Like all/so many who have gone to war there are demons deeply rooted in their souls. As a talented football goalie his skills are recognised, used at first then later appreciated in a small town that slowly, gradually, begrudgingly in many cases accept him in to their community. Later he joins Manchester City and slowly wins over the crowd in post war Britain. He became the first British foreign footballer of the year, later he was honoured with an Order of the British Empire along with a German Order of Merit. I think (and I clarify that this is my personal opinion) none, or is that the majority of us, really do not want, ever, to be sent to war. It's the same for both or all sides of the conflict. We/they may have volunteered but was it peer pressure or duty or whatever you may call it that made it happen. But I say again, it's the same feelings and demons that affect both sides. Many return from war with various degrees of damage that need working through. Many many affected by the spoils of war also reach the end with various degrees of damage. It's really understanding others experiences and points of view that can lead to understanding, forgiveness and acceptance.
