It was quite a very sad film, I felt so sorry for Bree that she wasn't accepted by her family in the first place and having realised she had a troubled son. I understand that Toby was angry at his dad for not telling him the truth about why she got him out of jail but he had no right to punch her. I would absolutely shake him to hell in order for him to wake up because she was his dad after all!
This movie really does a good intake of being a transsexual and how you deal with it. The character Bree in my opinion really did a good example of herself on showing off and being brave who she truly is! She really doesn't stand any messing! I honestly wish herself and that singing cowboy Calvin were together. I mean, they literally locked eyes when they first met and even when they had said goodbye, they looked inseparable together! Now why no happily there?
It's a good movie I have to admit regardless!

Though it may indeed be worth watching for Felicity Huffman's Oscar-worthy performance, the film as a whole, falls flat. The main characters ring true, even if most of the circumstances in the setup do not. The movie is at it's strongest when focused on our main character's intense yearning to become more completely who he/she feels he already is, and dealing with the ghosts and humiliations in his/her past. However, the potentially compelling subject matter of trans-genders struggling for identity and acceptance feels awkward when crammed into this road movie formula. It goes from ultra-serious, to comical farce in quick succession, and hits upon almost every cliché you've ever seen in a road movie. Don't expect any surprises here in either plot or dialogue.

Felicity Huffman gave an Academy Award nominated performance as Bree Osbourne, a transsexual on the process of becoming a woman. She learns that she fathered a teenage son in New York from an ex girlfriend. Bree lives by herself in California and works two jobs, one at a Mexican restaurant and as a telemarketer. Her psychiatrist encourages her to face her past before becoming a woman. The film was one of the first about the trans gender issues over ten years ago. Felicity Huffman is a woman playing a man becoming a woman. Huffman earned her accolades well from this performance. As Bree, you see her as sympathetic, alone, and strong as well unwilling to face her disapproving family and her stranger son. The story of Stanley's past comes to meet with Bree's new life. The transcontinental journey reveals her son's own problem life and the circumstances that led to his life in New York City. The film takes a gentle sympathetic approach to the trans gender issue.
