This is a great movie. The little girl's performance is amazing. The whole story is centered on her. I don't think I've seen a movie before that relies on a child actor as much as this one. This is the most psychologically insightful movie by terry Gillian. This little girl is thrown into the incredibly bizarre circumstances, and it reminds me of what it was like to be a child where you are forced to settle into the situation you were born into simply because no one has ever shown you an another way. And the only refuge you have from an unbearable reality is your imagination. But there is always the risk that your imagination will take you off the deep end and isolate you from reality.

Not this one for sure. People are calling this brilliant and mind boggling. Negative. I kind of like obscurity and strangeness, but this movie is just awful. There's nothing to it. Honestly, it ranks below films like GUMMO and THE BROWN BUNNY in my opinion. There's no reason for this type of art to exist. Bordering pedophilia as art only because a character had mental instability? A child creating and fostering a parents addiction. This just shouldn't exist and nor should it be called art. I've not thrown many movies in the trash can in my lifetime, but goodbye plastic and polycarbonate.i have zero interest in viewing this a second time. Too bad Jeff didn't read the script, I think he just owed Terry for some old debt of grassitude.

I really admire Terry Gilliam. True, his strange films can be a little hit or miss but he paints a very broad canvas and is a true original - his films are unlike those from any other director that I can think of, apart from possibly Marc Caro (Delicatessen etc). Regarding Tideland, there are some very dark and disturbing aspects to the story. The characters reminded me of a Dickens tale in many respects, some grotesque and threatening, others sad and vulnerable. Although there are references to Alice in Wonderland, this is definitely not a movie for children. No doubt many who wander across this by accident will be bored/confused/horrified but I found it one of the most powerful and original movies I've ever seen. If you really enjoy cinema (and highly unlikely you read the IMDb otherwise) go out of your way to see it. This is something special but you've been warned!

I so disagree with the other reviewers who found the little girl's performance amazing. she always played to the camera and gave no indication of real internal life, ever. she should be playing a smarmy kid in some crappy TV show, always chipper and showing off. only bought her performance for a few seconds here and there. to those shocked at the themes, well you just stay with your safe little movies, what were you expecting? Me, I thought I was promised a dark surreal terrifying film. Maybe it turned out to be just that, but after about a half hour of it I just couldn't bear anymore of it and put it back in the box and came here to crap on it (like several other reviewers, I registered just for that purpose). Not once did i suspend my disbelief, it played out like a setup the whole time. This is so very far from his best work. it's just a jumble, really a major letdown. Oh well, nowhere to go but up!!!

I will never watch this movie again. The acting was good. The directing was good. The script, the set design, the costumes, and the cinematography were all good, but I'm still giving Tideland one star. The movie is horrifying, and not in a fun way. The entire movie you're worried a four-year-old girl is about to be raped to death by heroine addicts, or worse. The best thing that happens in the entire movie is a gritty, realistic train wreck. Gilliam says he set out to make people uncomfortable by putting a little girl in peril. He did a bang up job. Don't trust anyone that likes this movie.

Tideland is very very unusual. I'd kind of describe it as a cross between typical TG fare and an attempt at David Lynch dark surrealism. Don't go into the film thinking you're going to have a neat plot resolution or some holistic comprehension. This one is not 12 Monkeys, nor is it Time Bandits. However, it is extremely well directed and shot, highly 'psychadelic' (whatever that means), demanding in terms of patience and attention, darkly comic, and entertaining. This film is not one for your mom and dad. Some of the content could be labeled as disturbing. I am doing my best to avoid giving any kind of spoilers here, so simply know that if you are a fan of Terry Gilliam, you will probably love this film.
