Going to a movie called Thumbsucker? This is a very Emo film. I would only recommend it to those under 21 years of age and have angst about their parents. Or, those over that age that are still at odds with the family dynamic and enjoy watching family drama films. Either way, the best part of this film is Benjamin Bratt getting dope pulled out of his ass. In fact he was the most interesting character on screen in this film. The addition of prescription drugs to treat teens was a worthwhile and timely plot line. Otherwise, its well acted and not overly dramatic. I just might freak out and break something though if I have to see another sensitive, white, straight guy coming of age story.

I guess it's odd for a review to begin with questions, but her I go: first how does the worst actor never to appear in a Star Wars sequel (Vincent D'Onofrio) continue to get work in movies? and if there was a point to this film what was it? Character development begins with the usual elitist "indie" disdain for anything middle American being doled out in heaping portions then suddenly does a 180 with all the "enlightened" left leaners having their lives exposed as frauds in one, unexplained, as if delivered by some unseen bolt of lightening. One minute I'm watching a story with big fat greasy Scientology's anti-psychology finger prints all over it, the next a tribute to better living through chemical engineering. Subtlety is nonexistent in this effort and I still have no idea what the point of this was.

Thumbsucker, what can i say except i was largely disappointed, well let me see. the story takes place in a modern day small American town, we are introduced to our main character and his family early on in the film, Justin Cobb is a not so average 17 year old who sucks his thumb and has not had a girlfriend, wanting to break himself of his habit he seeks advice from his longtime orthodontist (played by Keanu Reeves), his orthodontist has many new age ideas and soon tries hypnotherapy, the story takes off from here and gets quite muddled up in its own storyline. although the performances are good the plot is weak and it appears that this would be just another coming of age film. although the theme is thumb sucking it is more about what it is not saying , Thumbsucker is an average film that shares a resemblance with Garden State the only difference is that Garden State was good.

Thumbsucker was a wonderful movie with great characters, great actors, and a suburb plot. The main character, Justin, is a teenager that continues to suck his thumb as a way to comfort himself as he navigates typical teenage problems - insecurity, low self-esteem, and trying to find acceptance and a sense of self. But the movie goes further - Justin's parents are simultaneously dealing with similar issues that have followed them into their adult lives. Justin's father was once a candidate to play pro football, and his mother is a nurse that has become obsessed with a TV star. The movie creates a message of trying to define normalcy - aren't we all a little weird? What really is normal? Is being a little strange really the problem - or does the problem lie in trying to live as someone that is outside of what society would consider normal? If you like movies about self-exploration, this movie is for you.

to be frank i came away disappointed from thumbsucker. it had so much going for it - an a-list cast including the always watchable d'onoforio, Swanson and reeves and what sounded like an interesting concept.. note i said 'sounded.' however the plot of thumbsucker is far too weak to sustain it for 94mins. it explores lou pucci's character who can't quit sucking his thumb much to his shame and that of all around him. through hypnosis he stops and becomes as vince vaughn his teacher says 'a monster.' and so on and so forth pucci's character goes on a journey of self discovery through the use of drugs, sex etc. this predictable fare was in my opinion completely undeserved of its hype, however kudos to the universally excellent cast(pucci in particular) who elevate this from a 2 to a 4 out of ten

Like my summary states, I felt that this film touched all the indie film cliché's quite nicely. The soundtrack was more like listening to the directors own personal mix tape. It's like, "Hey, here's my touching movie... and also, I like Elliott Smith." I also felt that there was poor story telling throughout. Events seemed to happen very randomly, and without much relation to the other items in the story. The story felt like an awkward mess. In the end, nothing is tied up. The director offers no answers. He seems to be suggesting that we are the way we are, and there's no point in trying to change. This is weak. He's suggesting that you take the easy way out, and we should just accept our shortcomings. To be fair, the movie did have charm, but it seemed to be trying too hard. If you want to see this movie done right, watch "You and me and everyone we know".

I love coming of age stories, but I really just wasn't into Thumbsucker. Thumbsucker is like Igby Goes Down, You and Me and Everyone We Know, I Heart Huckabees, The Squid and the Whale, you know, that brand of new with the spare thoughtful script and marginal stars. Not that I don't like those kinds of movies, I loved Igby Goes Down and anyone who likes Thumbsucker should definitely see it. On the other hand, Thumbsucker was a little weak. I was pretty invested by the end, but it took a while. I was pretty tempted to fast forward through some of the beginning, but I found Lou Pucci engrossing. Essentially, I feel Thumbsucker was overrated because of its understatement, but if you like that genre of movies, coming of age and the like, see Thumbsucker!

A lost in translation for young adults, what I mean by that is that the movie is slow for a reason and have many aspects to it. Justin is a lonesome teenager who sucks his thumb and have other mental issues. At first I was thinking that I turn it off, it was labeled as a comedy and I was expecting something that the movie didn't deliver, as I was thinking that it was slow unfunny movie I realized that i had watched the whole movie without turning it of. great acting from the whole family and a string script which deals with some important issues. The soundtrack really gets the movie starting and the cinematography really gets the feelings well.
