Basically a big disappointment, following the far better Blue and White. This film story wastes the talents of Irene Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant. No -- they don't perform poorly, but they really aren't asked to do much of interest (Jacob was far more impressive in her little walk-on appearance as a student auditioning for Bulle Ogier in Rivette's "Gang of Four"). There is WAY too much plot -- and the whole thing seems manipulative and contrived (especially the ending). Any incipient "atmosphere" is soon dragged down by the over-busy plot.

Red is an odd little movie, one that is difficult to describe or categorize. Superficially, it's the story of Valentine, a fashion model living in Geneva. Driving one day she hits a dog whom she returns to it's owner, a retired judge, after having it repaired by the vet. Expressing disinterest in the animal, he gives it to her. Shortly thereafter, the dog runs away and returns to the judge with Valentine in pursuit. A second time at his house, she begins to learn his secrets, and slowly enters his life. Of course, there's more to Red than this simple story. Red is a modern morality play about relationships, communication, regrets…a whole gamut. As I said it's very hard to explain but very easy to recommend. Rent it if you get a chance.

Maybe I'm not enlightened enough, maybe I should have watched the other two movies of the trilogy...but I didn't like this. For me this movie has no point,no believable plot, I am even struggling to write a review because I don't know what did I just watch. After an hour into the movie I still didn't get what's this all about. The only good thing about the movie is the music. The music is phenomenal and it's a shame it's wasted on this.

It's kind of likeable, the protagonist actress is charismatic and fit the character well but there weren't enough plot, lessons or deep dialogues to make a movie unfortunately. Not even the supposed conections that should have made it catching were really linked.

I've seen only a few of Kieslowski's movies, but I believe the characters in this film were among the most warm that he created. The acting is lovely and the photography is something that you'll remember for a long time. I think this movie will be remembered as one of the most gentle invitations to re-evaluate ourselves.

When I saw this film for the first time, at the Chicago Film festival in 93' I was disappointed. I had to wait outside for 90 minutes and had to sit in like the second balcony at the Fine Arts. I wasn't happy. I thought it predictable and kind of boring. Boy was I wrong. I ended up seeing it a total of 7x in the theater. What made me go back? Friends who saw it when it opened(and I assume had a less congested hence, better experience) loved it. Loved it? It only took a second viewing to see that I was totally off. The other five were for pure enjoyment(oh, and to take friends)

It's no coincidence that the character at the heart of this film (Jacob) is named "Valentine". "Three Colors: Red" is a thinking person's drama which tells of a Geneva model whose life is on a collision course with those of two men. Artistically and technically excellent sans the usual tawdry tinsel of domestic studio flicks, "Red" seems pure, dignified, and elegant as it tells a fatalistic tale of human interconnectedness with grace, beauty, no filler, and minimal dialogue (making for an easy subtitle read). During the run, many scenes seem unrelated. However, the last few scenes connect the dots making the watch worthy and worthwhile. A rare and critically lauded film, "Three Colors: Red" will be most appreciated by foreign film buffs and anyone into serious high-minded drama. (A) Note - I checked this film out on the Rotten Tomatoes website and found the score bar to be 100% red...a rarity for a film with so many reviews. "Red" was all red. Coincidence or kismet?

I must say, "Trois Coleurs: Rouge" is one of my favorite all time films. It has an atmosphere all on its own. It presents destiny as the keeper of our lives and in such a way that sends quivers down my spine. The music (Zbigniew Preisner) is breathtaking and complements the moving images, which in most cases, utilized only natural lighting techniques. It is an inspiration to all budding filmmakers. I recommend for all cinephiles, "Preisner's Music". A recording of much of the music made by the man of who's name bears the cover.
