This film is an absolute gem, showcasing the incredible talents of Janeane Garofalo and highlighting the physical beauty of Uma Thurman (and Ben Chaplin). It is an incredibly well crafted and well-written film due to the efforts of director Michael Lehmann and author Audrey Wells. If there were ever any doubts as to the acting ability of Ms Garofalo this film will put them to rest. There are scenes in which she is positively luminescent as the 'voice on the radio' – Dr Abby Barnes. This film was to be a star vehicle for Uma Thurman: she has top billing both in the opening title sequence and in the closing credits. She also has the personal assistant, personal makeup and hair and even a personal acting coach! But she has worked on just 12 films since 'Cats and Dogs' was released and Ms Garofalo has completed 39! Janeane steals the show (again)! The story is derivative: Basically it is the Cyrano story; however, it is given new life and freshness by the appealing characters and plot twists. I must admit that I am a bit tired of Janeane Garofalo playing the 'ugly' girl roles. She is far from ugly and really should be playing the romantic characters more often. This really is an outstanding film – the scenes with 'Hank' steal the show and the late-night telephone conversation between Abby and Brian should not to be missed.

In this film we get a good dose of comedy and romance. A few things don't ring quite true; perhaps the film producers could have swallowed the idea of making Abby less good looking, although the chosen actress is good in her part, I'm sure the viewers could have sacrificed one pretty face for more realism. Whilst I enjoyed watching it, I must admit the most realistic character is Hank, the large lovable dog. This film has taught me the importance of....well, not much admittedly, but it's more for fun than spiritual growth anyway!

there are some nice moments in this film, but the plot requires one to believe that Garofalo is sophisticated, witty, and really homely; Thurman is drop dead gorgeous with the personality and intelligence of a rock; and that Chaplin could confuse two such individuals for each other. None of this is plausibly true about these individual performers, and none of them manages to sustain such an impression over the course of this film. Garofalo is way too attractive, Thurman is too interesting and likable, and Chaplin nowhere near clueless enough. Garofalo and Thurman work at it, but both are badly mis-cast. Chaplin is not given the material to pull it off.

being a huge fan of janeane garofalo might make this review slightly biased, but i loved this film! although romantic comedies aren't my thing at all, this one showed more originality and depth. (for a romantic comedy of course). i also found it quite sad throughout the film as abby being classed as 'ugly' and 'fat', and while watching the film i admit a tear did come to my eye. the ending was really funny and i loved the dog! janeane garofalo's brilliant one-liners throughout the film were hilarious (along with uma thurman, who is a great actress). ben chaplin rocked, even though it is a bit unrealistic how he didn't figure their identities sooner! although mainstream movies aren't really suited to janeane garofalo's style, i thought this film was really good for its story, humor and emotion. 7 out of ten.

Some films barely last in the memory for 2 seconds, some for hours, and some become those films you never forget. This is one of them, largely as it is, quite simply, the greatest film ever made! Okay, so the plot is not complex and particularly original, but it works, filled with some funny lines. The film never outstays its welcome in any scenes, all directed well, with some nice backdrops thrown in for good measure. However, it is the quality of the acting which truly stands out. All 3 leads are outstanding, as is the wonderful dog, (how did they get the rollerskates on him?!?!?), and make sure that the script is exploited to the full. It made me laugh and cry, and I was applauding by the end. Forget 4 hour epics, and Oscars, the real gem is here. Truly incredible. 11/10!!!!!!!

This movie wasn't really a comedy it was more of a love story. I don't think I laughed once, but I still enjoyed it. It was kind of predictable though, but still it is still a good time waster. The acting was great and the plot was great. It was a bit boring though, well I thought it was but this isn't really my kind of movie. If you like a descent romance movie that I recommend it to you. If you aren't a romance type of person then forget about it not for you. If the movie was more funny it would probably be a top movie, but no jokes, it is hard to sit through. Especially after you watch it the first time, it will be hard to watch it again, because you know what happens and it's not really funny. If I had to rate this movie I would probably give it a 5.5 on 10. -Mickey88-

The Truth Aboout Cats and Dogs I found a touching film. This Radio Talk Show Vet (played by Janeane Garofalo) gives advice over the airwaves to the general public, whilst keeping herself very much to herself. She has the wrong persona about herself; and when a male listener falls for the voice he hears on the radio, she misleads him into thinking that she is someone she's not by asking a friend (played by Uma Thurman) to deputise for her on a date. This is a recipe for comedy, and a good deal of problems for our demure vet. The film, which last something over 90 minutes places, in my mind, the wrong person as "Leading Lady" on the credits; not giving the top billing she deserves to Janeane Garofalo as the Radio Vet. A touching Comedy Romance, with great work from Janeane Garofalo and Uma Thurman. Well worth seeing if you haven't already; and well worth seeing over and over again if you have. RPQ.

This is not only one of the best movies I've ever seen, I bought *three* copies. One each for other members of my family. Sure, it's somewhat like Syrano-Bergerac, but not like "Roxanne" (w/Steve Martin & Darryl Hannah), which is an exact copy. This (Truth About Cats & Dogs) is a film that is well acted by Janeane Garofalo AND Uma Thurman. It has a great story, great cinematography and is great for the whole family. Maybe with the exception of the "phone/bed scene", which may be considered a "not yet" for kids under 13. Rent this movie, and enjoy! My favorite scene was the "stunt bicyclist" - you simply *must* see that scene!

This is a comedy gem; one of the best of the last decade. I rarely find a modern comedy that allows belly laughs to such a degree. This is undoubtedly Janeane Garofalo`s showcase. One of the most under-rated comic actors of all time (seriously!), she shines in a sympathetic role as the neurotically shy Abby. The bright, breezy story allows her to show the full gamut of emotions and display her marvellous timing. Uma Thurmans contribution should not be forgeotten, however. Her naif is a perfect foil to Abby`s caustic, cynical charm. Ben Chaplin provides something a weak link, but mainly becuase the writing doesn`t give him enough to do. Overall, a sparkling, witty fim, which updates romcoms for "Generation X"
