The story has everything you'd ever need to inspire young and old. There's just something missing. That something is that the screenplay, direction and chosen edit feel like a glossy magazine - not a gutsy drama. The treatment of the subject matter is misguided at best. Then when the director realises that there are massive lulls in the story it's jazzed up with some Hollywood-like plasticity just to keep a pulse going. The story itself is moving, definitely. The casting and acting near perfect. It's just difficult to understand how with all the industry experience for bringing incredible tales like this to the screen that the audience is subjected to the incredible stretches of outright boredom when there's all this material to choose from. It's a real shame because the tale itself is mind blowing.

Movie is good, however confused from one part, why sisters speak to each other's with not their own native language, when it comes to humans, when they want to express their deepest emotions such as sadness or joy, they use their own native language, but here it is mixed in very confusing way. And also what confusing me, they are trying their best to make us hate they actors, you are refugee your country in war, accept what is given for now, stop whining and complaining, you cant change what happened, keep going to make ur dreams comes true, life is not fair , everyone knows this, this kill the movie with the whining.

This is the feel good movie of the year. It's better than that tbh. Inspirational, brutally honest, real world relevance. It's all here. As an Australian, we are a swimming mad country. We love it, and dare I say, we are bloody good at it. But to conquer all that the sisters and other refugees did just to get to Germany would've been a great story in itself. But to add the swimming component is truly amazing. Some "reviewer " who rated this a one star, claiming it was a tale of entitlement could not be further from the truth.(I know everyone's entitled to their opinion), but it beggars belief how one could see this movie as anything but brilliant. This movie has already received plenty of awards, imo it will take out some of the big awards coming up. Well done to cast and crew. A really tight, professionally produced real life drama. Cheers Dave.

Two Syrian sisters. Both are professional swimmers. When the turmoil begins in Syria, they flee the country to Germany and achieve global success in swimming. This is the story of the movie in a nutshell. The first stop of the two sisters in their escape from Syria is Istanbul. In the movie, Istanbul is shown as a nightmare for Syrian refugees. It's like a place that should be abandoned as soon as possible. There is not even the slightest reference to Turkey's embrace of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees in the film. Two Syrian sisters embark on a small boat with other refugees and set off for Lesbos. They are stuck in the sea for a while and come face to face with death. At this time, the Turkish Coast Guard is being sought by those on the boat. The response from the Turkish Coast Guard is: "We can't help you." Fortunately, they somehow manage to throw themselves on Lesbos. Greek authorities join hands with international organizations and welcome the Syrian refugees very nicely. No more trying to skewer the boots. No stripping and beating. No pushing towards the Turkish border. Next stop is Germany. Syrian refugees are treated very civilly there, too. It is a film that elaborates on the anti-Turkey sentiment, not crudely. It's even more nauseating and even more frustrating in that respect.

... trying to find a new life. Most of us reading this thankfully live in stable democracies in which the biggest concerns of our lives are inflation, rising interest rates and ever bigger mortgages. We do not really stop to consider others whose lives are upended or stymied by war, genocide and ruthless dictators. Some of us even cast a wary glance at refugees, asylum seekers and even ordinary migrants because they had the apparent audacity to seek a better life in our countries and take our jobs (even if these are jobs no one wanted in the first place, as the COVID-19 pandemic proved). Although it is not a cinematic masterpiece, The Swimmers tell an ample tale about the dreams and aspirations of every human being regardless of which country or family they are born into; they desire safety, shelter, community and, above all, an environment that supports their growth and allows them to find purpose and meaning in this universe. We all have but a short span of time on this planet and we should thank our lucky stars if we do not have to negotiate psychopathic and narcissistic leaders like Bashar al-Assad who put their own selfish interests before their nation's.

Despite the actual story (which is incredible!)... this is one of the most clever propaganda movie against Greece immigration policy and how the simple Greek people are feeling and behaving to immigrants. A bunch of lies which are placed in many and clever manners indirectly or directly. Especially in the point where people in Lesbos were closing their windows on refugees sight... i went furious!!!. People that have open their arms and houses, they share their food and they saved countless of refugees lives, they don't deserve this kind of behavior even for the sake of a Hollywood drama. After watching this i will think twice in the future if i would help any kind of refugee, although i know that that is sorely just an angry moment. IMO this deserves an official statement from the Greek government. If you are Greek downvote this one everywhere. If you're not Greek, you'll be wrongly informed. If you are Lesbos resident... you'll be FURIOUS!!!
