Relic and Mimic(Mira Sorvino) both came out in 1997 and are 2 of my kind-of-films. The Alien series and The Thing(Kurt Russell) are included. I was entertained and kinda scared even with the expected 'heart-jumping" parts. I "fell" for Penelope in this movie. Eff the critics, I LIKED IT!

Well, the soundtrack is good and the 2 main actors are also good. The story is maybe not original but the directing is still good. I wouldn't say that this is a must view of course but I thought very low of that movie the 1st time I saw it... but after seeing it 3 times over the past 2 years I have to say that I enjoyed it again. Special effects are better in this one than in "Anaconda". The director also had the intelligence to block the story for a second movie, which is good. I liked the 2 main actors a lot...sometimes the story is too obvious but I still gave it a 7.5 out of 10.

This movie was really good. It happens to be my favorite horror movie! I read the book when the movie was in theatres. I loved the book.....it is my favorite book. But unfortunately.....I didn't get to see the movie. I waited years for this movie. I finally rented it this year and watched it. After 4 years, I wasn't disappointed. But the same night I saw this movie, it debuted on tv for the first time. Sucky coincidence, huh? All I'm asking is that you watch the movie and make your own decision about the movie.

I have long been an avid reader, and the book The Relic is among my favorite of all time. It has led me to many a great story by the authors Lincoln and Child. When this movie was announced, I was very excited. While it is true that the movies rarely live up to the novel, I still had hopes that this would be a decent representation of the source material. I was greatly let down. The first mistake made was removing agent Pendergast and adding some of his traits to the cop D'Agosta. Pendergast develops into one of the best literary characters of modern time, but I digress. This movie very, and I stress very loosely follows the narrative of the book. Now, I gave it 4 stars instead of 1, because there is a small part of me that thinks I might have enjoyed it more had I not read the book first.

Definitely worth the watch and probably multiple viewings for hard core horror fans. It is a solid story that keeps the viewer's attention. Acting is decent overall. I thought the monster was impressive. Most of the CGI was good for the time. I felt the filming location was a big plus and well used.
I've seen several comments concerning the lighting in the film being too dark. I thought it looked realistic and help create the mood. Well developed plot and more intelligent than your average monster flick.

This movie, like any I've ever seen by director Peter Hyams, isn't an always-to-be-remembered classic, but the ride is fun for the time you stay on it. It does what it sets out to do-it is slick and scary. And the creature FX (when you finally get to see the creature) are undoubtedly the work of Stan Winston's fertile imagination. He did a damn good job with the creature-even if it's facial feauures were a hell of a lot like the Predator's. As for Hyams's directing, he takes advantage of the fact that the creature is a genetic composite. The scene where the creature climbs onto the walls and ceiling of a room like a spider was really cool-I've gotta give Hyams's credit for putting that on screen-it was pretty scary. anyway, if you're looking for a well manufactured piece of moviemaking, I definitely recommend the Relic.

Why is everything so freaking dark? Turn some lights on. Also, the non-stop loud noises for cheap scares are a huge turnoff.
