Sounds promising, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt. Sounds, is about as far as it went though. A bit more editing was needed to trim the film down from a rather lengthy two hours. For something billed as a comedy the laughs are pretty few. There is no chemistry at all between Brad and Julia and generally the acting is pretty dire. Probably the only saving grace was James Gandolfini. One to watch if you are a Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts fan only I would say, or perhaps you are suffering from insomnia !

Love the soundtrack. And that makes or breaks a film. But what ultimately carries The Mexican to excellence is the sneaky way in which the story unfolds. Leading the watcher along a humorous trail of misfortune of the leading characters, it concludes in epic quality and a nicely tied up romantic finale. Oh yeah, Pitt is great to watch.

I really don't understand some of the low ratings for this one, I went into it just knowing who was in it, and not much else. To say I was mesmerised is an understatement. This was filmmaking perfection for me.
There were laughs, tears, suspense, surprises and the two hour running time just flew by.
I must say it wasn't Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts that were the standout performance for me, that had to go to James Gandolfini who was superb, he was completely believable.
I liked it that much I've ordered the blu ray to upgrade from the DVD, and I shall watch it again immediately when it arrives.
Superb.

This is a popcorn movie with aspirations to quality, but it fails on either level.
The romance doesn't work, because we're not made to care about the characters played by Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt; the humour doesn't work, because the movie's trying way too hard to be "hip"; and the attempts at serious moments don't work, because almost nothing in the movie has anything to do with reality.
The only thing this has going for it is James Gandolfini, and I'm not just saying that because he's gorgeous. Surprisingly (and refreshingly), the fact that his character is a gay hit man is not played for laughs. Unfortunately, it doesn't serve a purpose either.

i saw this film when it first came out in the theatres, and, for the record, i gave this film a chance, had somewhat high expectations for it considering the actors who are in it, and, to my utter horror, have found that it is the worse film ever made. i wish gore verbinski could erase this film from his resume, and i'm sure every other sane film critic would agree. this is probably his most embarrassing work to date. i'm glad he was able to salvage himself with "the ring" and "pirates". everyone makes mistakes, i guess, but not many people make the mistake of directing the WORST FILM EVER MADE. this film was so boring and lackluster that it caused the friend that i saw this film with and i to stop watching popular films on a whim for about 2 years. we were just so p***ed that we would never get our $20 back, and didn't want to make that mistake again.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, it was fast-paced, intriguing, well acted, good plot, ample humor, and lots of chemistry between Julia Roberts and both Brad Pitt and James Gandolfini. I highly recommend it. 8/10!!

Take a couple of huge names and a huge studio and add a huge amount of hype and you'll get a huge return on your Hollywood producers' investment. Even with the internet, people still rely on advertising to tell them what movies to see. So, here we go again...another piece of crap flick with Pitt playing a cardboard cutout character, Roberts overacting, and Gandolfini playing a mobster with personal problems...right out of the Sopranos, duh! Weak story, thin plot, poor drama/action, wandering, pointless, poorly directed, generally weak flick. Wait for broadcast on this turkey.

If there ever was a stinker this sure fits the description. The most pathetic dialogue mixed with real bad performances from Roberts and Pitt in worst written and directed story this millenium. I hate this movie and I don't encourage anyone to see it. Stay as far away as you possibly could.

From the director of "MouseHunt" (not a recommendation), this movie never really fulfils any promises the teaming of Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts might suggest (and not only because, as several others have noted, the two spent surprisingly little time together on screen). It has to be said that the sections featuring Roberts with hitman James Gandolfini are overall better than the ones involving the not-too-bright character played by Pitt, and you almost wish the movie had been about them instead of the long tale about the title handcrafted gun that it is.
J.H. Wyman's script suffers from a few too many endings, and some moments are painfully contrived (like an execution carried out to the end of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'"), but the film overall works as a painless way to pass two hours in a cinema. You can't help feeling that all concerned were shooting for something more, however.
