A sorely needed commentary on how to live well. The samurai provide a model for living deliberately, and cherishing each moment. I think this is Tom Cruise's best work yet, and his on-screen link with Ken Watanabe makes for a truly moving feature. A story of life, love (without objectifying either party), and truth of what it means to live as humanly as possible.

Recommended.
'The Last Samurai' features some very cool and entertaining battle sequences, which are shot excellently. The premise itself is attracting, it's acted out astutely by the noteworthy cast list. It probably lasts too long, but I never truly got a feeling of it dragging out though.
Tom Cruise is fantastic as Capt. Nathan Algren. It's no secret or surprise as we all know that guy can act, he adds a great deal to his character here; especially on the emotional side of things. As for what happens with Algren, it's all good even if the love interest parts are undercooked.
Ken Watanabe is splendid in the role of Katsumoto, while Masato Harada (Omura) and Timothy Spall (Graham) give positive performances. It's also nice to see Billy Connolly (Gant) and Scott Wilson (Swanbeck) appear. Hans Zimmer's score is, as presumed, grand. That would be one of a number of reasons why I'd say you should watch this.

I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from this movie, but every scene is done to perfection. I was literally stunned walking out of the theater. Even the romantic subplot, the bane of any decent movie, was in this case spectacular. I would say that I was a mild Cruise fan before this, and a much bigger one afterwards. This is by far his best movie. I would rate Top Gun as his previous best, but don't let that or the military theme confuse you. This movie is nothing at all like Top Gun in any way. It seems to me that the "cocky, fall, humility, redemption" theme that was the centerpiece of virtually all Cruise's movie's up to Jerry Maguire has been put out to pasture.
Ken Watanabe was better than magnificent.
I have refused to buy a DVD player, as DVD's are more expensive than VHS, and I resent that given that I believe the manufacturing costs are about the same. When this movie comes out on DVD, I think I will be forced to end my resistance.
10 out of 10.

I've watched this movie this evening and I surprised that I discovered it lately.
I have same emotions as I had watched Dances with wolves as this movie
Important to discover a culture closely to love it and to be ready to sacrifice yourself for it.

Yes it's not Historically accurate..
But what a great film! A true and sad event that many nations had to face of losing their heritage to Western cervilization. Too many people unwilling to separate accuracy from theatre to give this a low score. It's a great movie and a eye opener to what was going on in those days. And one of Hanz zimmers best soundtracks.
