Common sense dictates that serial killer flicks and spaghetti westerns don't share the same DNA. But that didn't stop Director, Michael Winterbottom, from trying to breed the two genres. Not unexpectedly, The Killer Inside Me--as it's name virtually suggests--is a ghastly abortion. The protagonist (played by Casey Affleck) is a nerdy deputy sheriff who missed his calling as an M16 Agent because he's as crafty as James Bond and scores equally hot women (Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson). Affleck beats up his babes and kills them then whacks all potential witnesses until half the town is dead and his colleagues, undoubtedly members of Mensa, finally conclude that he's the only possible suspect. To make matters worse, there are a handful of unresolved subplots such as the wannabe Perry Mason played by Bill Pullman and something about a murdered rapist step-brother. I would rate The Killer Inside Me three stars out of ten but Affleck's solid acting and Alba's tush combine to merit a fourth.

I'm going to start off by saying I am not easily disturbed. I'm not grossed out by blood, guts or anything else like that. This movie was unbelievable. Why the hell would anyone want to watch this? There's this lady that the "murderer" has sex with all the time. He beats her with belts and chokes her with a belt. Then he says he loves her and she keeps having him over at the house to do it. Then he comes over again and beats the living crap out of her face until she DIES. It was very uncomfortable to watch. Literally almost gave me a panic attack. Don't watch this movie. It sucks. You can't understand half the crap they're saying anyway. I never write movie reviews, this is my first one. bye!

Thank you IFC in Theaters because this is one of those times where I have to side with the negative reviews so I'm glad I really didn't pay for it beyond my monthly fee. The story has a sheriff leaving a trail of bodies around him as he makes out, and truly believes he's a nice guy. Things begin to spiral out as some the the killings he's committed raise some questions. Casey Affleck is wrong as the sheriff who has a sociopath hidden inside him. He is not menacing. Equally miscast is Jessica Alba as a prostitute who is beaten to death in a rightly reviled sequence. There is a good story in there somewhere but this cast with director Michael Winterbottom make a mess of it. There is no tension, there is only unpleasantness, an unpleasantness that comes from the source material. (And there is also an ending that is a major "what was that...?") Unless you like nastiness for nastiness' sake I'd take a pass.

The movie was very, very slow at times. Here is some of the things I didn't like: He is beating the Jessica Alba character to death, and she does not fight back at all, just says I love you.... she doesn't cry or make a sound... give me a break An unarmed guy running down the street with his hands in the air, yelling for help, is shot by another cop multiple times.... no one yells "freeze! police officer"... at the end he dowses his whole house with gasoline and alcohol. and nobody can smell it? give me a break again. what was the reason they even brought the Jessica Alba character to his house? there was ZERO reason to kill his girlfriend, guess they were just looking to have a more disturbing scene. just very stupid writing. the drunk told him where he was staying. would of been easy to stage a "accidental" death (alcohol poisoning, etc etc) one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Having read the novel by Jim Thompson, I think I can safely say that The Killer Inside Me sets a certain challenge for director Michael Winterbottom, or for that matter a challenge for anyone who wants to adapt it for the screen. It is a story that takes us deep into the mind of a Texas psychopath. Getting inside peoples heads is so much easier on pages than on screen. Winterbottom gives it a game shot, but doesn't quite manage to capture the book's depth and scope. The occasional use of narration (using segments from the book) or flashback, only helps a bit. Anyone who has not read the Thompson will find this movie somewhat hard to follow. It's worth noting I guess that the movie is a noble adaptation, but for some odd reason, the plot is more convoluted in film format. There is a certain lack of explanation, and this is the film's biggest weakness. That does NOT mean however, that is isn't worth seeing. As a dramatic thriller, The Killer Inside Me is effective. It is gritty, and grim, with good performances, nicely composed montages, and Winterbottom captures the essence of 1950's Texas fairly well. There is something kind of warm and communal about the town of Central City, the grass is green and the sun is always shining. Ignoring the fact that there is a psycho in the local law enforcement, which is discouraging, this is the kind of place where one might fancy a summer home. The movie comes with an ending that is absolutely devastating (despite being a bit rushy). Overall, Winterbottom makes mostly good decisions, but also a few not so good ones. He throws in country music jingles in places that are quite unnecessary. I think I can recommend the film, but not without warning. It's tricky, and it needs a bit of a tune up. It's still an evocative drama though, which packs a dirty punch, and leaves you thinking.

***definitely contains spoilers**** What can I say? I am not opposed to violence if it is justified in any movie, but to me this was nothing more than soft * with lashings of seemingly pointless woman beatings. I don't understand why such big names signed up to be in it to be honest. If the whole point of this movie is to examine how a psychopath is caught then I failed to see any evidence of the thought-processes that the 'good guys' went through. I could have enjoyed it if we (the audience) were left in the dark from the beginning and we unravelled the identity of the killer along with the cops but from the get-go we knew who it was. Maybe I am being a bit thick here but it was only with really deep hypothesizing that I could even begin to figure out why the baddie did what he did at all, and who was the girl in the flashbacks? Who was it in the photos? What was going on in the car in the flashbacks? Some reference was made about the brother being killed rather than dying as the result of an accident but that was never explained either. I am not sure why this film is receiving such good reviews by some other than that they got to see quite a few spanked bums and even shots more of Jessica Alba in bra and knickers. If you are looking for a movie that is good entertaining fun that takes you for a journey during it's 90-odd minutes then I would suggest you give this a miss.
