What a positively sweet story! Not something I would normally say about a movie about young superheros, which seem to be everywhere these days. But in this case, I will make an exception. There were no contrived "life lessons", no virtue signalling, no graphic violence for its own sake and no offensive language here. What a refreshing change! And another nice job in the whole "show don't tell" in the moral themes of loyalty, redemption and family(whether adopted or by blood) over short lived fame and glamor! Please keep making these!

The acting and props were fine for the budget available. The problem in the movie is it really seemed unsure of what it wanted to be. One moment the movie would feel like it wanted to be a comedy, which is where it was the best. The problem is it would suddenly go from a comedy to a family drama. Which can work but the character me needed to be better developed which the movie did not have time to do.
It felt like there was a much larger story to tell, but they did not have the time or budget to tell it. So it is not a bad movie to watch, but I would not recommend this as a feature to subscribe to the daily wire and watch.

They said Wes Anderson and I have to say a little Scott Pilgrim. Has some very heartfelt moments where I teared up and some where I couldn't help but laugh.
Carry Elwes was great as well as the rest of the cast.
I feel like the negative reviews are from people who maybe don't like the Daily Wire, but I really enjoyed it.

The Hyperions is a clear vision from one mind in writer/director Jon McDonald that I want to see more of in the future. There's genuine laughs and heart throughout this superhero/family dynamic that only an indie director could bring with obvious limitations in financing.
Set in the '70s with pseudo-nostalgia, The Hyperions tells a tale of two former superheroes robbing a museum containing their "titan badges" that grant them their powers. However, things don't go to plan, motivations are unclear, and people from the past will be needed to solve the problematic situation. A tale told through flashbacks and stylized animation, pinpoint editing, and the language of film that has been forgotten recently in favor of "exposition through dialogue" and voiceover, Jon McDonald proves to be a director to watch for in the future.
The technicals (5 possible stars)
Directing: 1
A clear vision and style that can't be overlooked, McDonald's vision is present throughout the film
Acting: .5
Cary Elwes and Penelope Mitchell give outstanding performances but Elaine Tan and other minor characters drag down the performances; most notably in waiting on other actors to finish their line to continue their dialogue rather than performing in tandem.
Writing: .5
A good story that gets a little sloppy towards the end and truly doesn't get the emotional feel it's going for. Honestly felt that a longer runtime would've helped.
Editing: 1
Wonderfully edited. Fun animations that fit the overall style and clear cuts with purpose.
Cinematography: .5
Overall good, but there were very few jarring handheld shots that were obvious "oops but we got a good take anyway" moments.
Personal score out of five: 3
I genuinely laughed along with the film when it was trying to be funny and I loved the style. I just wish that it either got the heartfelt moments it wanted to achieve or go all in on the humor; trying to do both with such a short runtime didn't work fully to me.
So all-in-all it was a 6.5/10, it's closer to a 7 than a 6 for me.

I saw the trailer and thought, "Oh, this looks fun."
I was wrong. It was really boring. I didn't care about any of the characters. The extremely limited super hero scenes were super cheap looking. I enjoyed the 70s aesthetics but that wasn't enough to carry the film. Especially considering that most of the movie took place in one room.
A lot of the reviews here feel the need to mention "The Daily Wire" being involved with this movie. That should neither be a pro nor a con. This movie sucked, and it doesn't matter who made it or why. If you like watching spoiled children complain about how much of a douche their father is (and he is), you'll love this movie. Because that's all it is. Anyone who gave this movie a 10 is lying.

I really wanted to like this movie. I firmly support the Daily Wire, and applaud their efforts to make movies outside the woke influence of Hollywood. The trailers for this movie presented what looked to be an offbeat comedy. Unfortunately, they put every funny moment (and even created a couple by stringing together unrelated scene components) into the trailers. This movie was not a comedy at all. It also wasn't really a superhero movie. The only visuals of superhero action consisted of Maya teleporting around while she beats up and eventually appears to shoot to death a band of thugs. The big showdown with the villain occurs off-camera! You see them facing off, cut to outside the building where they hear shooting and the police act stupid, then it cuts back inside to show the aftermath. Then you get this weird almost threatening scene with the main bad guy that again is resolved off-screen. This rips off your viewers, and annoys critical viewers.
I had talked this movie up to my family on the appearance of the trailers and the quality that went into the last movie DW made, Shut-In, which was very very good. Halfway through this movie, I was feeling embarrassed to be showing it to them. It wasn't funny at all. The drama in it was contrived and cliché. The two actresses playing Vista did a good job. The actress playing Maya did a good job. The part of Ansel needed better development, but the adult actor playing him did what he could with it. Cary Elwes phoned this one in. It looked like he thought he was doing an improv acting class at a community center. The set pieces were very fake looking. The animation inserts were jarring and didn't make sense at times other than that they were trying to cover for the fact that they couldn't make believable cgi for the cheap animatronic eagle telephone thing. The whole movie came off looking like what I would expect from a first year film school student who doesn't show a lot of promise.
It's sad, I really wanted to like this movie...

This came out of nowhere, but you got a great cast with great performances.
For Jon McDonald's more or less first bigger release I enjoy his style, it reminds me of James Gunn's early work, so looking forward to whatever he does next.
Really enjoyed my time with these character and would like to see something more in this universe.
I like the throwback to something older.

Frankly I can't stand superhero movies anymore. They're dopey and hollow. The Hyperions, despite capes and powers, is not a superhero movie. It's a movie about family and friends, about how power corrupts and distorts, and above all else about how integrity and good values always end up being worth more than power, fame, money, and privilege. It's not dopey, it's not hollow. It's charming, funny, and very touching.
I didn't really know what I was in for and what I got was a truly great surprise.

It's not good. I support the Daily Wire and what they're trying to do, but they'll never succeed unless they raise their standard. This movie is sadly stagnate and not funny. There are a few good ideas but they aren't played with any real artistry or talent. The quirkiness is hollow and the positive themes get lost in the lazy jumble of cheap filmmaking. I wasn't expecting brilliancy. I was just hoping for a fun time. I was still disappointed.
