There were some lovely parts of the film but others seemed to drag on a little too much. I cannot say much since I've watched only some clips on youtube. I really like the concept of the alteration of the Cinderella plot, it turns it from a fantasy to more "realistic". If the music might've been a little better in some parts.. It is very 1950s in the style of the film, the costumes, and the production. It reminds me of many 1950s Broadway sets, etc

first, for Leslie Caron. second - for the older prince. for ingenuity. for the fairy tale atmosphere. and, sure, for the status of refuge in not the happy times. because it could be defined as pink, nice, silly, a too naive story about dreams, castle and happiness. or only as version of Cinderella. in fact, it is a real beautiful film. for the status of trip in the past. for adorable performance of Leslie Caron, reminding, so much, by Audrey Hepburn ( Iknow, I am far to be original ). and the most important thing is the state of soul after its end. so, see it !

The musical numbers drag on and the movie gets pretty dumb by the end, but this movie has so much pure charm it just doesn't matter. The bulk of that charm is supplied by Leslie Caron, who you have to fall in love with within the first 15 seconds she's on screen, but there's also a lot of charm from Estelle Winwood and the movie itself is so genial and pleasant and yes, charming, that you can't help but enjoy it. Of course, everyone knows the story of Cinderella, and this alternate version sometimes uses that to its advantage, but at times the differences between this story and the original are just kind of annoying, replacing a simple, very ingenious fairy tale with something that is a bit more Hollywood-contrived, but as I say, this movie is so charming it gets away with it.

Leslie Caron is adorable as a spunky Cinderella and is given a huge MGM budget to surround her with great sets, costumes, and even some cool dream sequences. The Glass Slipper isn't your typical Cinderella re-telling, so if you're expecting pumpkins turning into coaches and stuff like that, you might be disappointed. This film likes to leave the question of whether or not magic is involved up to the audience, which is a smart choice. It also allows Ella to meet the prince way before the ball which leads to a much more realistic and developed love story. There's great support by Estelle Winwood as the dotty fairy godmother character who, in this version, is the neighborhood klepto. Also fun is Elsa Lanchester as the wicked stepmother.

after so many decades, it could be naive and pink. in fact, more than part of a period, it is a lovely movie. not only for charming Leslie Carol role, not only for choreographic moments - too long for contemporary sensitivity - but for the translation of fairy tale soul. for the not real young Charming Prince, for a remarkable cast and a fine humor, for the mixture of emotion and joy , for the image of Cinderella, little more complex, for the extraordinary inspiration inspiration to remember old motifs in a delicate, precise manner. I admit - it is the Leslie Caron film despite my admiration for performance of Estelle Winwood .but in same measure, more important, it is a lovely story. for each age.

Granted, Leslie Caron is NOT Cinderella, but I did like Michael Wilding (even though he seemed a bit old for the part), and Estelle Winwood was fantastic. I did like some of the twists, especially the use of subterfuge vs. magic (Ella "Borrows" a dress, rather than having her godmother "Create" one for her). But mostly, I agree with dinky-4, the song "Climbing Rose" is what I remember most about the movie. I'm hoping the score has been released on CD, but haven't found it so far. By the way, if anyone knows where I can get the sheet music and/or CD for that song, please let me know! I've been looking for the music for what seems like forever!

This film presented a different story than the original we all associate with a slipper and having to return at Mid-Night. Leslie Caron, (Ella) played the role as a girl who became a servant in her own home and was treated poorly by her mother and two sisters. Ella was the laugh of the town because she always looked dirty from ashes she had to handle along with all the other menial duties she had to perform on a daily basis. When Prince Charles, (Michael Wilding) arrives in town after many years going to college, he eventually meets up with Ella who he remembers when she was a very little girl. There is plenty of dancing and Ella performs a great ballet performance along with Prince Charles. Estelle Winwood, (Mrs. Toquet) played the role as a fairy god mother and gave a great supporting role. This is a great entertaining film and is rather delightful to view.
