For most of the picture, we observe how the characters "walk around" on the stage and on the stage - a very fascinating sight. :) The main action will unfold closer to the finale, this action does not frighten, but tries to keep in suspense with the supernatural frenzy of the restless spirit of the evil sorcerer. Out of nowhere, out of nothing, suddenly, the character "Maria" appears - why, for what?... Very funny, - as she appeared, so she left. :) - Why was it needed, why? Do you need it?:) Launches all this demonic bacchanalia - a flickering light bulb built into a hurdy-gurdy, :)))))) - hands wrap around the viewer's face, - what's going on here? - This is a reasonable question to myself :)))) The DENOUEMENT - the battle with the criminal sorcerer with the help of a glowing bulb in a hurdy-gurdy with the incredible efforts of the actors brings its "fruits" - the absurd closes the curtain and does not say goodbye, hinting at a continuation.:)))) THE SCENARIO WAS INVENTED BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, NO OTHER WAY.

I'm honestly not sure what people don't like about this movie.
Because it is pretty damn good!
It's a period piece, that takes place in the late stages of the 19th century.
In a prison that has been cursed- and is haunted- by a satanic serial killer, who was caught, and put to death, prior to bringing his nefarious goals to fruition.
We find ourselves watching as a priest, ghostbusting expert, and two fledgling paranormal investigators, attempt to confront the demon, with hope they can get rid of the dark entity once and for all- using a combination of spiritual and scientific techniques.
So that it can't attach itself to someone, and escape the confines of the prison walls.
The demonic ghost of the killer has a sort of Exorcist meets Evil Dead vibe.
While the film, as a whole, is like a more dramatic version of Ghostbusters.
Either way...I thought that it was both well done, and highly entertaining!
Though, perhaps it's not what some people were looking for, or expecting.
That being said...it does seem to set itself up for a sequel.
So, if you liked it as much as I did.
You have that to look forward to, in the future.
A solid supernatural thriller, all around.
6 out of 10.

John Rhys Davies stars in this. But at the age of 80, the blunderbuss vocal energy of his Raiders Of The Lost Ark days are gone. Then again with the stilted, monologue type dialogue he and the rest of the cast are given to work with, it's not surprising. In fact, it is so uninspiring and dull, that I found it actually painful to listen to, so only lasted 30 minutes of the 1 hour 50.
Which is a pity, as the production quality is decent. Convincing Victorian sets, street scenes, and costumes and a decent soundtrack, show an attempt to be above the B movie bracket.
Plot wise, I cannot really comment much. Victorian death row prisoners, new fangled electrickery, sciency stuff, mixed with dead prisoners ghosts and paranormal shenanigans. It all sounds too familiar.
Go watch penny Dreadful instead.

If this film was a football match and the director had 3 open nets in front of him , hes just piked it over the crossbar everytime. I decided to watch this because victorian horror ala jack the ripper era horror has a certain mystique about it , the fog the stiff upper lip . The sheer creepiness of the alleys and buildings of the citys and towns. This film doesnt utilize any of that .it spends its time entirely in a prison, which could be good look at alien 3 , but this does not compare with that movie. Richard brake should be the stand out in this picture he doesnt get the chance due to the method of jumping from body to body so is hardly on screen at all.

The Gates is a 2023 horror film that has a good cast of talented actors, but is ultimately a disappointment due to a bad script, bad direction, and a setting that doesn't help it.
The film follows a family who moves into a new home in the Victorian era that is haunted by a malevolent spirit. The cast is led by Richard Brake, who gives a particularly scary performance as the spirit. However, the other characters are underdeveloped and one-dimensional. The plot is predictable and uninspired, and the jump scares are poorly executed.
The film is well-shot and atmospheric, but these elements are not enough to overcome the film's flaws. Ultimately, The Gates is a dumb, by-the-numbers horror film that offers nothing more than dumb-down jump scares. If you're looking for a good scare, you're better off watching something else.
Here are some of the things that the film did well:
Richard Brake gives a scary performance as the spirit.
The film is well-shot and atmospheric.
Here are some of the things that the film did poorly:
The script is bad.
The direction is bad.
The jump scares are poorly executed.
The Victorian setting doesn't add anything to the film.
Overall, The Gates is a disappointment. It's a dumb, by-the-numbers horror film that offers nothing more than dumb-down jump scares. If you're looking for a good scare, you're better off watching something else.
Here are some additional thoughts on the film:
The film's reliance on jump scares is particularly disappointing, as it is a cheap and lazy way to create scares.
The film's ending is also unsatisfying, as it feels like the film just runs out of steam.
Overall, The Gates is a wasted opportunity. It had the potential to be a good horror film, but it is ultimately let down by its poor execution.
My advice: Don't expect a good film based on the casting of this film. The Gates is a disappointment from start to finish.
