What are good start and mystery where we don't know the main characters too will but they are mysterious and have weird power so good enough and the good cinematography and colors just wow good first movie. The fight and the music just goes so well together in this one and the main guy who is a chat because he keeps making the girl blush by being super nice and an honest good boy. I love him. It's just good. What I'm going to remember about this movie is a little doggy crossing the main heroin and just realizing what horrible stuff is going on. What is written here is gonna be the same in all of my 8 reviews all of What is a tob is new. The Garden of Sinners is a beautiful and psychological anime. That's not really the point because I'm not here for a philosophy. I think it's cool and all but because of it is in English subtitles. I cannot understand it that well, so I had to go back to a different understanding of the characters and story trying to. Let's just say that the Vibes and gorgeous art was what keep me going through this anime. It looks good. I can't look away because of the dark aesthetic and Moody lighting and because of the movie budget just looks even more gorgeous. The animation is mostly used for the small details like finger movement and opening an ice cream with legs when only have one arm. I didn't get completely the story because of the leg of good English skills I have reading but I got the emotional importance and I really like it.

This feature focuses on a detective agency's investigation into a series of suicides involving high school girls - with no apparent connection to one another - who all jump from the roof of the same derelict building. None of the girls leaves a suicide note, and no reasons for their jumping can be found in their private lives. Shiki Ryogi, an investigator for the agency, visits the building, and discovers a supernatural presence... The first half is absolutely gripping. There's a great mystery, some fantastic locations, and the whole thing has an intensely 'unreal' atmosphere. It doesn't shy away from gore - some of the suicides are graphically shown - but it doesn't revel in it either. Artwork and animation are fantastic. Stormy skies, crowded city streets, decaying buildings (interiors and exteriors), all have an almost photo-realism. Character designs are good. And although I watched this with subs, the Japanese voice cast seem a good fit for the characters. Unfortunately, the second half becomes muddled. It jumps about time-wise, and more than once I had to resort to the interweb for character background and to generally make sense of things (looking online, I'm not alone). Character conversations also become too philosophy-heavy, almost to the point of boredom. But we get a resolution to the mystery, and throughout the whole thing the gorgeous design never wavers. Music throughout - by the amazingly prolific Yuki Kajiura - is beautiful (it's got something of Philip Glass's score for the original Candyman). Fan-service is virtually nil - unless you count short skirts. What's good about this is really good. It's a shame about the drawbacks, but this still rates 7/10.

Note: This will be a review for all 7 "Kara no Kyoukai" movies. Each film is about a different incident, but there are a lot of flashback scenes that explain past events in latter films. All the movies should be watched in sequence like an anime series rather than individual films. "Kara no Kyoukai" literally means "Boundary of Emptiness", is a dark fantasy anime about a girl with super powers fighting her urge to commit murder. Animation quality is absolutely insane, even in theatrical anime standards. Every scene is filled details and wonderful coloring. In fact, animation in these films rival Byousoku 5 Centimeters (2007), which I consider to be the most photorealistic film that retains the anime feel to the drawings. Sound is almost equally stunning, each scene with perfectly matching BGM, and especially dramatic orchestrated music for fighting scenes. Each film is directed by a different director, and all 'episodes' have different feel to them, but they're relatively consistent and well-done. I especially liked the 5th film: "Mujun Rasen (Paradox Spiral)". You will most likely be very confused by the time you finish watching the first 3 movies, but pieces start to connect, and you'll be drawn in to the story. However, I feel the characters could've been developed a lot better (since total run-time of 7 movies are close to a two-season-long/26ep anime series). Also, there's just too much skipped between each incidents, sub-main characters like Touko and Mikiya's sister had smaller roles than I would've liked. Still, audio/visuals are simply perfect. That alone makes "Kara no Kyoukai" a worthwhile anime to watch, and it's definitely one of the most well-produced and complex anime 'series' ever.

This; the opening instalment in the 'The Garden of Sinners' series of films, is set in September 1998 and news reports speak of a series of suicides. Four schoolgirls have jumped from the roof of Fujou Building; there is no obvious connection between them and none have left a note. The mystery is investigated by a paranormal detective agency; in particular by Shiki Ryogi, who is convinced that there will be a total of eight deaths. Investigation of the building reveals a dangerous presence that Shiki will have to confront. I have yet to watch the later films in this series but on the strength of this I'm looking forward to watching them. The story is intriguing with interesting characters; most notably Shiki. It serves to introduce her in an impressive way but I wouldn't be surprised if there is quite a bit more to learn about her in later films. The animation is fantastic; beautiful, bleak and occasionally brutal. While much of the film is taken up with characters talking there are moments of intense action as well as the sight of the bloody aftermath of the suicides that might disturb some viewers. The resolution is solid, if somewhat downbeat. These comments are based on watching the film in Japanese with English subtitles.

To be honest, I expected more from this movie. The Garden of Sinners series is critically acclaimed, but its first movie just didn't make any sense to me. There's something that could be called a plot (the girls that commit suicide), but it doesn't create any suspense nor does its resolution feel in any way satisfying. Perhaps I'd just need more background knowledge to understand what's happening, but this is the very first movie of the series, so... what? The characters are bare-bones. What I've learned about all of them together wouldn't fill even half a page. And what little I know doesn't make them likeable or relatable. Also, the dialogues are terribly confusing. There's a lot of what I'd call philosophical rambling. Perhaps there's a cultural barrier between the Japanese and myself, but I didn't have any problem with any other anime I've watched, so... huh. Disregarding the story, the characters, and the lack of suspense, it's a pretty good movie. The animations are nice, the soundtrack is solid, the cinematography works well. Overall, the production value seems high, though perhaps not incredibly so. It did feel like a waste of time, though. I'll still give the second movie a shot; with pretty much everybody agreeing that this series is excellent, there must be something I'm missing...
