This movie started OK but the story underperformed in the end. And with a bellow average story this was far from a memorable movie.
The acting was good enough from the actors. In this mediocre movie Christopher Plummer's acting was one of the good things this production had. I also liked the acting of Jai Courtney. But this didn't gave the actors enough to work with in the first place.
There were a lot of very predictable and silly things going on in the story. Those were annoying to watch. For example the last escape was ridiculous. The girl was a spy. What a BIG surprise!! The character development of the Jai wasn't complete. They could've shown more.
I was not impressed with this one. Not recommended.

No idea the reviewers watched but this was just awful. Slow, senless conversations wrapped around something that only barely resembles a plot.

This fictional WW2 movie cleverly blends fascinating fact and fiction to create an exciting believable story. If you ever wondered what happened to Kaiser Wilhelm after Germany lost WWI this movie would interest you. Christopher Plummer plays Kaiser Wilhelm II - he really looks quite dignified and royal in his fancy dress and acts very well - remarkable for his age. Janet McTeer provides unexpected comic relief as the second wife of the Kaiser. Lily James plays the Dutch maid who is actually a Jewish resistance spy and she looks quite alluring and shows she is no Cinderella here. Jai Courtney looks quite right as the German officer with a heart.
I won't discuss the story because it's so clever I don't want to give it away. Just be assured it is worth watching and actually a better story than "Allied". Unfortunately because this one doesn't have a very famous Hollywood movie star it got a lot less publicity which is a shame. Of all the good German stories this is one is very entertaining.

This seems to have been assembled out of bits of better World War II movies. It gives us Christopher Plummer doing Captain von Trapp in old age. It gives us, like the superior Black Book, the frisson of a German officer committing Rassenschande with a beautiful and spirited Jewish woman. It gives us intrigue by British Intelligence. It gives us the cousin of that cliché the Good German -- the Honorable Prussian Conservative, a good patriot who wants Germany to win the war, of course, but considers the Nazis to be too extreme and downright vulgar. It meditates on the fine distinctions between people who merely think that Jews are distasteful and altogether to conspicuous and influential, and people who take those opinions to their logical conclusion.
What it does have have going for it is that, however improbable the relationship written for them, Lily James and Jai Curry are extremely attractive young people who have a "boi-i-i-i-ng" moment when they first set eyes on each other and who plausibly portray sheer animal attraction. Most of what surrounds that is nonsense.

Christopher Plummer, Janet McTeer, and Eddie Marsan were excellent, but the film itself was just average. Even the little bit of sex and violence in this film was gratuitous, though the film takes place during WWII. Were all Wehrmacht officers rapists? I'm no expert, but I don't think so. Kind of disappointing.

It is very nice to see Christopher Plummer as Wilhelm II, Lily James playing his servant, and Jai Courtney as a Nazi Captain. All of their performances were very enjoyable. The plot is very interesting. It is just a great WWII production in every aspect. The movie includes a plot involving spies in Denmark.

What might have been a reasonable plot tends to be reduced to a somewhat implausible outcome. Several challenging situations are set up, then all solved in equally farfetched proportions - too often stretching the believability factor towards being laughable. Sex scenes are set up too quickly and with crude gratuitousness - leaving no time to develop into any form of believable relationships. There are good looking costumes and sets- but ultimately, it shows up as superficial gloss - without enough substance to sustain its length. Performances are OK, photography is slick, music score is good, just a pity about certain elements of the script.

This film tells the story of an army official in Nazi Germany, who is responsible for finding out the spy in the Dutch royal residence. He develops a romance with the Jewish maid, and he is forced to choose side.
I normally do not have high expectations for films I have not heard of, therefore I was pleasantly surprised by "The Exception". The plot is engaging, as it makes viewers care for both the German soldier and the Jewish maid. The production is good, and the sets are convincing. Jai Courtney is charming as the army officer, and I think he attracts adoration, sympathy and respect for his character.

This, of course is very far from the realities of those dark days of WWII. It is more of a classical historical romance, slightly reminding of Ralph Fiennes English Patient etc...only much more naive, innocent and pure....
Little spoilers following
This could never happen. The romance. The last chance of promising Wehrmacht officer to prove his loyalty and this charming innocent British lass making fatal mistake after mistake starting with telling him she was Jewish. This can happen only in some good, kind classical movies...like this one)
Apart from somewhat dangerous idea of making Wehrmacht soldier the British classical romantic hero.... I must say that an attempt of Jai Courtney to play this role was....not quite successful. His role of Eric in Divergent series was much more close to it.
Still, great thing that the girl survived. and...personally, there is something that makes sense of this nostalgic atmosphere in a remote manor, where the last Kaiser drifts away into the oblivion. Perhaps...all this was his dream..just one of his dreams and we see all the story from his perspective)) Just a thought....
This movie is like a young red wine from the south, you drink it while the cold rain is raging outside and it warms you up....Good sensation)
