i must admit i really do love this film and despite what other people say i thought this was the best haunted house film i have ever seen,a lot of people seem to think that it's not that scary or not a very good film although I've yet to see a haunted house film that's any better,sure it can be a little silly in places but this was made over 20 years ago on a low budget but i think it does deliver quite a few scares and is never boring so if your in the right kind of mood and you want to watch a decent haunted house film then you can't go too wrong with this little gem.

Campy, sad horror movie. One of those sad 70's horror films. One that one watches on fast forward, which is what I did. The house attacks people who are trying to fixer up for a drug rehab center. Well more like a mansion, under a hot springs. The usual cast which dies off and a mystery. The mansion is under a port hole to hell. Campy acting and directing. Well a late night movie. Miss this one. 4 out of ten stars. There is a mystery which I will not tell, but the Evil is looking for a something the usually story plot.

"The Evil" (also known more appropriately as "House of Evil") is a very simple, relatively low-budge film that was shot in only 30 days. So, you'd expect it to be crap...but oddly, it isn't. Richard Crenna and Joanna Pettet head a cast of various folks who are soon to become victims of a demoniacally possessed mansion. However, most of the folks spend much of the film trying to rationalize and explain away the weird and malevolent happenings in the place. But when folks start getting tossed about like rag dolls and the place seems to have a mind of its own, the only reasonable explanation is evil! The film has a lot going for it. The ghosts look amazingly realistic and the stunts do as well. Plus, the film is more than just gore and death. Well worth seeing if you like horror flicks.

A very good horror-movie about some demons who have their home in an old mansion. The action starts when the new owners tries to move in. -------- This is a real horror-movie of the very rare kind. You seldom find many of this type. And it's scary as hell. The atmosphere manages to thrill over and over and the whole film moves towards a climax that I barely find in horror-films today. Highly recommended (((((9 out of 10))))

The evil is hiding in an old mansion.Whoever strong and noble soul would set the holy seal upon the gate to guard the place in life and death till time is no more that no man will set loose the Beast again.The haunted mansion is bought by a psychologist and his wife.A number of Richard Crenna's colleagues and former interns help in the restoration of the ominous manor.The unseen force begins to knock them off one by one.The battle between good and evil begins..."The Evil" is an eerie haunted house movie that is a bit reminiscent to Lucio Fulci's cult classic "The Beyond".The acting is strong and the suspense almost never lets up.There is very little gore,but some shocks are certainly effective.If you are a fan of "House on Haunted Hill" or "The Nesting" you can't go wrong with Gus Trikonis "The Evil".8 haunted mansions out of 10.

A good cast and some interesting, stylish direction help move this standard haunted-house yarn out of the low-budget gutter. The segment near the end, with Richard Crenna encountering Victor Buono as the devil gives the movie added camp value. Sporadically entertaining, but ultimately rather silly and tame, "The Evil" may not frighten you, but it offers mild amusement if you don't take it as seriously as the film seems to take itself.

Richard Crenna leads in this lackluster 70's horror effort. It tells the story of a couple who buy a mansion much in need of restoration, they call in some friends to assist but find themselves trapped inside by a supernatural entity. Alas very little happens, the story doesn't make a tremendous amount of sense and the whole thing is somewhat of a bore. The IMDB rating for this is quite high so expected more, sadly it misfired on all cylinders and left me scratching my head. No idea how this got its 18 rating either, it's stupidly tame stuff.
