I love HP. I have most of his worst in digital books and Re-Animator was a guilty pleasure since my brother introduced me to it. I'm sure this movie was on a budget, but it doesn't look bad. Colors are rich and the quality of the image is high. The problem for me was bad acting, bad editing and poor adaptation.
The male lead was the worst of all. He was a complete idiot and pretty much ruined ever scene he was in. The two best actors were the pregnant wife, and the female best friend of the female lead.
In the right hands, this could have been a 7/10, but with no serious recognizable talent, this was sinking before it left the boat launch.
At the end of the day, it comes off as an over ambitious film school project. A lot of weird choices here and I doubt anyone associated with this film will ever be offered a substantial role, this funk will follow them everywhere.

This movie's score actually dropped as Inreviewed it. Enough said.

Let me start by saying, I am a pretty avid Lovecraft fan, and I own every movie even remotely based on his work (many of which are pretty bad, but I still find something to love in them) I also love bad/low budget horror. I'll watch Full Moon's entire catalog any day of the week. That said - I never thought I would see the day someone made a movie worse than Troll 2. But here it is. Honestly, this is so bad it upset me. The script is deeply insulting to H. P. Lovecraft's legacy and insulting to the intelligence of anyone watching this trash fire. Most of these actors couldn't pass acting school with a bribe. I wish I could say the worst thing about the script was how predictable it is (which it is), but there is so, so much worse than that going on here. Literally, the song "row your boat" is used as an evil chant by the cult members in the film. You know...."row, row, row your boat"....cause nothing is more chiling than bad actors singing a jingle randomly (it literally isn't even used for summoning or anything, they just start singing a round.... They name drop Cthulhu pointlessly at the beginning of the film while hypnotizing someone with a lighter, establishing themselves as a Cthulhu cult - a pointless scene which is thrown away almost immediately because (as anyone with a passing familiarity with Lovecraft knows), this is a Dagon story. The cast for some reason keeps making ahegao faces and going cross-eyed. Racial slurs? Yup. And Dagon when he appears is a 5'4 guy in a really bad kaiju outfit. The best makeup in the film is a "fish faced" person that I'm pretty sure was borrowed from the Barge People movie. (still no idea why its even in the film as that is one of many scenes that is just there and contributes nothing to the story. Listen, I want to say this is one of those movies that will have you laughing at how bad it is, but it's too boring to even pull that off. I do not have the words for how much I want to Thanos snap this movie out of existance.

Don't get me wrong, this is a creepy movie, but the original Dagon was far spookier in most respects.
I liked this version, but it you get a chance, check out the movie Dagon from 2001.
Someone mentioned that this version seemed more like Rosemary's Baby and I understand that, but I recognized this for what it really was. But not a bad comparison.

First of all I had been watching horror movies from slasher movies to cult movies to ghost movies and everything in between. That said with the exception of the Dunwich Horror made in 2007, I consider this movie to be better than any of the others. This includes the original Dagon which was terrible... Let's be honest it was horrible; this includes the original Dunwich Horror and any of the Call of Cthulhu movies. This movie portrayed The Cult of Cthulhu and worshippers of the deep ones and old ones exactly as I always imagined them to be from how Lovecraft describe them in his books. They were crazed conniving bloodthirsty yet on the outside well very Rosemary's Baby. Yes there were some holes in the plot the size of the Andromeda Galaxy. However the special effects including the chemicals were decent. The portrayal of the deep ones was well done. I'm not going to spoil any of the movie but for all of these people that are saying that it was terrible, you're probably the same people who complain because their Fork is placed on the right side of their plate when they eat instead of the left. Come on people. Stop psychoanalyzing the minutiae of independent horror movies and just enjoy the ones that are decent for what they are. This is one of those movies that you can enjoy for what it is. You could tell that everybody in the cast was enjoying what they were doing all the way through it. Oh and not to spoil anyting but there is a last scene at the end of the credits that will really show you that yes please people had fun making this movie and it should be enjoyed by the people watching it. The naysayers for this movie are probably the ones who watched Friday the 13th and said they didn't like it because there was too much blood. Okay that said enjoy this movie if you get a chance to watch it.

Overall pretty good. Actors are not well known but are competent. The story is almost a scene by scene copy of Rosemary's Baby. Neither Ira Levin nor Roman Polanski is credited.
