A tale of a young boy Dexter (Joseph Mazzello) with AIDS who befriends a rough and tumble boy (played by Brad Renfro) his exact opposite. 'The Cure' is a sad, if a bit too soapy pull at your emotions "message" movie with it's heart in the right place. The highlight might be just watching them finding friendship and hanging out with each other when no one else accepts them. However since the real story centers on the boy's AIDS. Things take off when one day at the local supermarket, Dexter's eye catches a checkout tabloid magazine that states a New Orleans doctor has discovered the cure. Both of them (obviously a tad naive) make it a plan to set out for New Orleans in whichever means possible. Which pulled me two ways. While its a mite heart warming, I found the plot wandered in a melodramatic fashion. I couldn't escape the tugging notion I was watching a road trip movie about self discovery, sickness and growing up. For instance, I know they're young, but I found it hard to belief in the things these boys do. Like making a cross-country voyage with no legal or downright scary repercussions. My misgivings aside. Those are movie conventions you come to expect and it doesn't stop 'The Cure' from being a good watch particularly with family.

Even though this film is 11 years old, I just rented it yesterday, and I found it to be a really touching film. The story of true friendship in the face of a very real monster is an inspiration and quite touching. While I did not care much for the amount of language used by some of the young actors--especially from Renfro--I understand that art is imitating life. Renfro once again does a magnificent job of the rough-and-tough, very (and I mean VERY) disturbed wannabe bully (his role in The Client comes to mind), and Mazzello does a wonderful job of the witty, somewhat quirky, Dexter--a child who realizes that his life must end too soon. While there are so many touching and funny moments in the movie, I have to say that my favorite was when the boys were cornered by Pony in the abandoned church, and Dexter (Mazzello) cut himself, saying his blood was poison. While very resourceful, and somewhat amusing seeing a grown man running away from two little kids, it's one of the hardest scenes in the film. Definitely check this one out, but prepared with your Kleenex--you'll need it!

It's hard to put into words just how wonderful this movie is.Do you know those old clichés where people say " It will make you laugh,it will make you cry ? " Well, this movie will. This movie is about friendship, and the way we deal with difficulties that arise in life to the people we love and cherish. As I watched this movie, I found it deeply disturbing that as human beings we could be so loving and so cruel at the same time.I found myself wanting to know what makes one man good enough to judge another ? As a Christian,I stand for what I believe, but try not to judge my fellow man for what mistakes they might have made to put them in any given particular situation.Although I find homosexuality wrong,I find it even more sickening that my fellow man could put themselves in such a mythically high position to damn each other.Would Christ have done this ? I think not. I also find it difficult to believe that my fellow man could judge a child,an innocent,as being guilty of anything whatsoever. There used to be a time when I wondered aloud to the Almighty why a child would have to go through such a hardship. My answer was much more simple than I could have ever known. The miracle that could have resulted in a cure could never equal the miracle that resulted from the way the individual was treated.Man learns by example, and what more could make a man humble than to see a child be so loving and selfless ? Truly what could equal a miracle that makes a man challenge his arrogantly bigoted behavior ? It just pains me as a human being that it would take something so dramatic to elicit such an emotional response. May God Bless All that watch this movie, and may it open all our eyes and hearts a little more.

When the movie "The Cure" starts, we find out about a young man named Erik (Brad Renfro). Erik is a teenage boy living with his paranoid mother, and living next door to him is a young boy named Dexter (Joseph Mazello). One day, Erik and Dexter connect and head up to the supermarket, where Dexter gets his first taste of Butterfinger. When Erik learns out that Dexter has AIDS, he tries leaves-and-water tea to make it better. But when the front cover of The National Enquirer says a New Orleans doctor has found the cure for AIDS, the two boys will stop at nothing to get to New Orleans for the cure. In my opinion, "The Cure" is easily one of the best friendship movies ever made. It shows unconditional love between a boy, his (new) best friend, and his best friend's mom. Everything is so well done, nothing needs to be changed. Not only do I give this a 10/10 for being a fantastic friendship movie, but it also is a sad, but humorous, and fun AIDS movie. And the tragic finale with Dexter's contraction of AIDS is enough to make me shed a tear. Very well done.

This is the only film that I have ever seen that has made me think of the characters, not the actors who played them, or forget about the numerous flaws that could've sunk it. In his first lead role, 11 year old Joseph Mazzello is mesmerizing, his performance as a dying AIDS victim is the best I have ever seen from anyone. Ever. His chemistry with Brad Renfro is what makes this film rise above everything else. Annabella Sciorra plays Mazzello's mom with such ability that makes me wonder why she isn't getting the roles Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan are getting. + (GOOD THINGS) 1.) Joseph Mazzello's performance 2.)'Trillion light years away' scene 3.) 'Bus Arriving' Scene 4.) Filming Locations 5.) Chemistry between Mazzello and Renfro 6.) Annabella Sciorra's performance 7.) The Bad Guys 8.) The script (BAD THINGS) 1.) Diana Scarwid's performance 2.) Where the hell did that raft come from? Total: 9.5/10

"The Cure" is by far, the only movie to even make me come close to crying. I almost couldn't hold it in. The film is surprisingly realistic. I also liked how the movie didn't do like others and only use the parents as a device to push the plot forward; they were actually involved somehow and Anabella Sciorra gave a tragically tear-jerking performance at the end. It was realistic and genuine. The film also succeeded in creating a heartwarming bond between the two boys. I found myself caring about them as well as the other characters. I also liked how the boys tried everything, including drinking plants, to cure the disease.
