A 5 on a 1-10 scale of watching something while bored. It has some interesting parts, but it's certainly not something I'd be yearning to see. Like I said above....if I'm bored, and I have nothing to do and I want to watch a movie, then if all the movies I really want to see aren't options..... out of what might be left, I'd give this a 5. Maybe 4. But I'm giving it an overall of 3 which might be a little generous right now. It did have a few unexpected interesting & scary scenes though. Many things to say, but I don't want to want create any spoilers.

I so want to give this movie a 10/10 but it was awful.
Spall was believable and understood the character Carmody, Sorensen's character not so much, there was so much behind Sorensen that we didn't get to see. Winter & Miryam worked well though, again more padding could have been put around these two. As someone who has read the book and actually cherishes the original copy, it could have been so much more. The basic plot line is there, with a few twists that are not in the book, yet that is to be expected when transforming book to film. It just didn't knit together, there were so much empty space that begged to be filled. Perhaps finances were an issue. As a book, it's one I hope to continue to re-read and lose myself in in my dotage. The film, not so much. Although I've just purchased the film (to go with the book), I would still like to say Thank you for 'having a bash' at it. (fingers crossed someone will come along and have another go) Could do better all round.

McKenzie and Harcourt do an admirable job bringing the novel to a present day setting, with excellent award-winning cinematography. Built on themes of the dangers of 'inviting' trouble upon yourself and/or others, accepting yourself for who you are and the 'magic' within you, and sibling bonds, "The Changeover" is a fine addition to New Zealand's growing film history. Excellent performances are provided by Spall and especially Erana James. James is one to keep and eye on for years to come. It's not among the best of 2017, but it's certainly a well-made film worthy of your time if it sounds like something that might interest you.

Dark hidden world of Witches and warlocks. The story is set in a gloomy backdrop of present day Christchurch, devastated by a Freak Earthquake a few years earlier. In these shadowy days, a child must be protected from a mysterious Evil. A Teenage sister (Laura) vulnerability is tested against the presence of this Evil conjurer, played by veteran actor Timothy Spall! Determine by events she does not understand or control. She is forced to search for her true self! Empowered she must be ready to battle for her loved sibling (Jacko) against a powerful mysterious foe, before it's too late.
Highly entertaining film that can be enjoyed by all! Be prepared for a thrilling adventure into the the world of Darkness and Light. Where you are taken to the shallowest depth of human suffering and with the protagonist you must find your way back to the light of self sacrificing hope to free him.
A brilliant performance by New comer, actress Erana James as Laura was top notch. Erana James didn't seem to be intimated playing opposite to veteran actor like Timothy Spall. Great direction by Co-Director Miranda Harcourt.
The cinematography is Brilliant with visuals techniques, such as framing of actors, Angles and lens choices gave the visual narrative a strong presence. I loved the subjective camera and effects technique of Laura character transforming through the change over period.
The Sound Effects where effective and hit you like a baseball bat. Combine with great editing and seamless transitional shots. The creative choices by Co-Director Stuart McKenzie was spot on!

I really went in to watching this film with high hopes. Teenager discovers she has hidden powers and tries to rescue her younger brother. Story starts off well and had my interest for about 30 minutes in and THEN it fell flat. The actors are actually perfect but the movie tried to form chemistry between the main actor and actress in a way that did not fit with the movie. There was a lack of build up for the audience, I kept waiting to be amazed while the main actress discovers herself but truth is she remained boring until the very end. This movie could have been great, may be lack of funding but something was wrong so therefore i could only give it a 3/10.

Have seen this three times, twice in theatres and once again at home and every time it feels like the first. Amazing lead with such potential, looking forward to seeing more from her. Timothy Spall was stellar as per and the duality of himself and Erana James on screen was as powerful as it was beautiful. A lovely film with such joys and gripping scenes, very refreshing!!!!

The Changeover has all the elements of a must-see classic, delivered in such an unusual, stylish and cinematic way that they take you completely by surprise. It had me on the edge of me seat at every turn, not just because of the powerful, unformulaic story-telling and jaw-dropping performances, but the sizzling sound-design, stunning visuals and heart-stopping climax(es). Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie have done Margaret Mahey's classic YA novel proud and shown the world that New Zealand film makers have that special something that needs to be seen to be believed.
