It seems that Mel Gibson had quite some experience with depression himself. and boy, that shows in this movie. He was real, and the treatment with the beaver puppet he found in the garbage was a a gift from God, when everything els had failed. Sometimes in life we just take ourselves too serious. I had a couple of great laughs during the movie. And by the way Jodie Foster and Jennifer Laurence are also in top shape. Just a lovely movie to get over it....and not jump out of the window or do something else supid when you feel low.
Just go and watch this!

Dark comedies are hard to pull off. Mel's performance was brilliant but the film tends to focus on side characters, almost as a way to kill time.

When the story is bad...a good script can save a movie. And vice versa. Here we have a lousy story and a weak script. Its REALLY bad. Jodie Foster has to decide if she wants to direct or act. She cant do both..(thats for sure)...She goes through this film with a worried frown...possibly hoping and praying that Mel Gibson will behave himself. Gibsons performance is O.K. (nothing special) The use of music is terrible. Its like that old Hollywood saying...when you go for something original...it either works - or it doesn't. This doesn't work. You can call it brave--or bad judgment. I think it has to be very poor judgment. How could ANYONE read this script --then still want to be part of this disastrous movie.??

crisis. a beautiful subject and seductive cage for each viewer. in this case is more. for the interesting acting of Mel Gibson. for the levels of facts by Jodie Foster. for subtle and delicate exploration of teenagers universe. and for speculation about a toy as key of relationship, cure, censure. result - a film about truth in different nuances. search of sense out of fragile realities. picture of world. confession about importance of lies as way to authenticity. and Anton Yelchin in an axis - character skin. the mixture between humor and sadness, jokes and deep abyss is secret of power for this intelligent movie. love, hate, empty circle, words, looks, impossibility to be other because you are not yourself - ingredients of touching - harsh -bitter story about need to be more than a shadow.

At first, I thought this was going to be a comedy, but soon saw so much that was sadly accurate in a depressed person's life. It is much more than just a comedy. If no one has ever lived with or dealt with another person's severe depression, this film would seem outlandish and comical. I found it to be very insightful, and loved the acting by both Mr. Gibson and Ms. Foster. Mr. Gibson's body language and facial expressions were a wonder to watch, and Jodi's portrayal of a loving wife who'd just had enough was equally good. I could see both the humor and the tragedy in this film. I loved it. Too bad Mr. Gibson's personal life was in the toilet at the time, or I think it would have been much more popular with the Hollywood establishment.

This film tries to be a masterpiece, failing on the way due to it's over pretentiousness and overall boring execution of the film. It's nothing short of plain torture for the viewer. It's slow pace and confronting themes don't make for an enjoyable ride. Though quirky, and I give it props for that, nothing that this film tries to do makes the adventure worth the time to watch it. Whilst Mel Gibson does his best to play the character, you can't help but feel you are going through the suicidal thoughts that he is when investing yourself in this film.
Nothing short of pure boredom. It's story is bleak and slow, whilst the depressing nature of the film makes you feel depressed watching it. Something to consider if you have nothing else to watch, but otherwise give this one a miss.
