This truly felt like the old western you'd watch with John Wayne in it or the newer western such as Tombstone. It looked like a "Based on a True Story" kind of film. It was perfectly cast and it was made beautifully. I'll watch it again for years to come and even show my kiddos (when they are at the appropriate since there was a few scenes that are unsuited for younger than 17 yrs old).

This was a terrific gritty western. Wow powerful brutal family survival perspective from the scenery in Montana to the casting, script, plot, storytelling, and acting. This is not a movie for small kids with some serious violence. Gina Carano does an outstanding job portraying a settler, wife, and mother in a frontier home situation that involves tough living to help her husband and kids survive and have a home. Nick Searcy is the villain an almost steals the show with the haunting reason for his wickedness and what he wants to achieve. Some of the violent situations are really intense and had me on the edge of my seat. I am really glad they made a good old fashioned western in the likes of Unforgiven and True Grit. Well done Gina and team. I highly recommend this flick.

I usually hate westerns, but this one was very refreshing. It was gripping from the very start and just like "A quiet place" there was this constant tension. This time not, of course, from alien monsters, but (human) monsters nonetheless. It helps that I absolutely loved "A quiet place" but this had enough extra difference to make it something special in and of itself. I don't usually like westerns because they tend to be very similar to each other but this had enough differences to make it highly entertaining. If we were back in 2005, I would rate this movie a 9 simply because it isn't a genre that I like. However, these days it essentially blows everything out of the water, not just because it is entertaining but because it has a genuinely believable heroine that isn't a Mary Sue and isn't the heroine because of no reason at all, but out of necessity for the survival of herself and others. A brilliant western that even someone who doesn't like westerns loved.

The entire plot turning moment where Haddie decides to pull a gun on her GUESTS who hadn't shown any inclination towards violence, was absurd. I shut it off right after that. It is a major problem. The film would have been so much better if the villains were actually PROPER villains and ended up attacking her and her family. Because then, we would actually hate the villains and be rooting for her. Instead, Haddie is essentially the villain of the story! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here! She put her entire family in mortal danger over what exactly? Because she saw scalps? But with the information that they were bought from traders, she had no idea whether or not the men in the house were killers. They didn't do anything wrong! LOL. WOW! It's laughably bad. Additionally, by stealing their weapons, she gave them almost no choice but to attack the home to retrieve them. If someone stole my dead father's guns, I would do anything to get them back. Every step she made was unwise and foolish. I felt no empathy for her at all. What a shame. This is bad writing. PS: I love the Daily Wire but how the hell did this happen? Every DailyWire movie is about strong women and with this one, it is no different from a Disney movie that has an unlikeable female protagonist who we are supposed to like but they make her unlikeable and crazy. I'm rooting for Daily Wire but come on now. PPS: Add Matt Walsh to the entertainment department of Daily Wire. I know for a fact he would have made some much needed corrections and he made a fantastic documentary just a few weeks ago.

IN A NUTSHELL: When Gina Carano was kicked off the set of the Star Wars Mandalorian and blacklisted in Hollywood for Tweeting a political comment that Disney declared was "abhorrent", the crew from The Daily Wire jumped into action and secured a movie script for her within days. A lot of liberal film critics have refused to even watch or review this movie simply because it's co-produced by Gina Carano and distributed by the conservative The Daily Wire. While I think films should be reviewed on their own merit and not be used as political ammunition, I have to explain that I just didn't understand this movie at all, especially based on what I know about The Daily Wire. Fans of The Daily Wire are generally conservative, so why would The Daily Wire think their audience would enjoy a bloodbath of a film? It's extremely violent, gory, foul-mouthed, and just not good. One of the characters is a vicious murderer who quotes scriptures, as if that isn't an offensive trope against Christians, the very people who truly want to support The Daily Wire. It's as if The Daily Wire doesn't truly understand its audience at all. The Daily Wire claims that it wants to make non-political movies, yet all but one of them so far have been violent, two of them extremely bloody and gory. I don't get it. This just didn't make sense to me. I wanted to like this movie to back The Daily Wire's support of an actress who was unfairly treated and canceled by Disney for exercising her right of free speech, but I just didn't enjoy this movie at all. The film was directed by Michael Polish and written by Josiah Nelson. It's about a frontier woman on the Montana plains who must protect herself against a ruthless gang of outlaws bent on revenge. THINGS I LIKED Those who enjoy hard-hitting Westerns with plenty of shoot-em-up scenes and simple stories guys might like this. No animals were actually harmed in the making of the movie. Daisy, the cow, is alive and well. The cinematography is very good. The homestead looks very realistic. The young boy played by Rhys Becker did a great acting job and appears to be a natural. He has the talent to do well if he wants a career in the film industry. The lack of a strong musical score gave the movie a raw feeling. THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: There were a LOT of bad acting moments. I was surprised and completely disappointed. So many moments were underacted, while others were overacted. Strange. So many Western tropes and stereotypes. The villains just acted like paper-thin caricatures. How could bad guys in the West miss so many shots? We see a rattlesnake in the dead of winter. I've heard they're not really active in cold weather. My husband and I rolled our eyes countless times due to so many dumb decisions by the characters. I hate shaky cam. Who knew prostitutes in the 1800s had fake breast implants? TIPS FOR PARENTS: This is NOT appropriate for kids due to the immense blood, gore, violence, and language. An attempted rape. A prostitute tries to get a customer. THEMES: Grit Family Revenge Sins of the past Family Self-reliance. You can see the full review on the Movie Review Mom YouTube channel.

Now I have to say it is no Tombstone or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but as far as good vs bad shoot out movies, this was great in terms of the story and action. My only critique is I felt some of the lines were delivered poorly at the beginning and there's a seen where it's obvious she's holding a fake baby, but this is by no means an attempt to diminish the film. Everything else was superb. I like Gina Carano's role in this film better than her role in the Mandalorian. There were moments where I was taken aback by the gruesome spectacle of the villains. Hattie definitely kicked butt in a fashion where her character actually grew and wasn't some poor plot point where she was an expert shooter. The part I loved most that may not be for everyone was the husband/wife dynamic towards the end! You do not see that in Hollywood anymore. Hollywood is more focused on scandals and dysfunctional relationships. Here we have a faithful husband who literally threw a * off of himself when she was soliciting. He stuck by his woman and came back to fight alongside her. Truly magnificent plot point that we need more of. Marriage is so much more than feeling in love and I felt this movie captured that. As far as action this definitely has plenty of it and am so glad this film was better than I expected.
