Sweet November

what a romantic movie!

Perhaps those who've written all the bad commentary about this movie need to sit back and just enjoy things every once in a while. This movie is a good example of a slightly sweet and cheesy plot being centered around some average actors, but it was a really good screenplay and EXCELLENT cinematography. Cinema students would do well to watch this movie and notice how the director used sets colors and music to set the scenes and mood.

A cold as ice advertising exec has a chance encounter with a free spirited woman. I was not expecting to find this movie so appealing, its a bit schmaltzy but in a good way, the two lead actors are very good with a great supporting role from Jason Isaacs. A good love story.

Charlize Theron is the only reason to sit through this epic of sentimentality. Charlize meets Keanu, the yuppie ad exec and insists that he give her a month - November - to change his lifestyle. All well and good. Story is interesting. But, it is so difficult to get around Keanu's inability to act. He always acts sincere. It is like watching a two hour audition tape. Fortunutely, he has Charlize to prop him up. I harbor great hope that Keanu will drift into character and supporting roles where he can learn more of his craft. However, he is no longer the Hollywood pretty boy and needs to lose some weight. Reeves is not Brando. While the story is sentimental - it is to the point and the ending was interesting and moving. 5/10 for story, art direction, supporting cast and Charlize Theron. I can only imagine a Matt Damon, or a Charlie Sheen might have done with Keanu's part.

"Sweet" seems to ooze out from every angle in this mess of a movie. Charlize Theron plays a lady who invites a man to live with her every month and introduces him to a lavish and wild lifestyle. Keanu Reeves plays an ad executive and her most recent invitee. She finds herself falling in love with him, and vice versa, and neither wants to let the other go once the month starts to wind down. There where some fairy funny moments, but overall I wasn't terribly impressed. ** 1/2 out of ****

Charlize Theron improves with each movie and has a certain charm that almost saves this from insipid mediocrity. However Keanu, no matter how much a chick magnet he may be, needs flicks like Speed or The Matrix to cover for his cardboard acting. I am sure he actually worked as a dentist in some previous life and no doubt will do so again in the next one. There was a chance to make a fine and quirky film here rather than a hollow reminder of the superior 1968 version. If the remake had been done in Britain by the people who did Bridget Jones Diary or Four Weddings then we may have found ourselves sighing wistfully at the end rather than falling asleep at the halfway point; it was a 45 minute film wasn't it!!!

Unless you have issues with your masculinity! If you have a heart and a soul you will love this movie! The actors do an excellent job. The plot is very good, particularly in todays times. It makes you step back and look at your own life, even question if you are the type that does not have time to stop and smell the roses, something we all need to do more of!

Sweet November has two actors who actually weren't bad in a few things- Keanu Reeves in The Matrix and The Gift and Charlize Theron in The Cider House Rules. But here, they are bad, and are less intruiging than they were in the last film they teamed up in- The Devil's Advocate (partly also because this isn't helped by Pacino). The film is about to very disturbed people (in more ways than you'd think) who join together so the woman can help the man be a better person, and it is painful to watch it, even as a chick flick. Overall, I don't reccomend it to anyone, unless you guys think that by being dragged by your lady you'll get lovin afterward (I'm sure you deserve it anyway after seeing this drek). D-
