Sappho, a newly wed American wife, with her husband on the Greek island Lesbos, goes through the pain of unrequited love to a young woman, very much like the namesake poet in ancient times.

The beginning of the movie started out as a movie that looked like it was going to go someplace. but the character of Helen didn't make since she had never been sexual with a man because no man was interested in her so she was a "lesbian" only ever being intimate with women. She made the first move on Sappho and got her to fall in both love and lust with her then said she didn't want to be with her after she(Helen) slept with Sappho's husband. This rejection causes Sapho to end up dead in the end.

I picked this movie up at a flea market. It reminded me of Summer Lovers with Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher in 1982. Many other reviewers said the acting and dialog were wooden and other than the scenery and music, and some good erotic scenes, you should give the movie a pass. I have always loved Summer Lovers (1982) with MUCH better dialog, acting and story, but I wish I could merge the two. Always thought the 1982 version was the perfect erotic movie that just stopped short. The 2008 is the extra but left behind all the class and quality that made the original a good movie.

After 50 plus years I've finally found the worst movie ever made. Atrocious acting all around. Ridiculous plot. Not even the beautiful scenery and sex scenes can salvage this disaster. And it's so long! Or just seemed long. Completely devoid of any meaning or message. I actually was laughing at how tremendously awful this was. If you wanna watch it go for it. It's your life. But I can't recommend this at all.

the acting in this film is wooden and not dynamic at all. The lead actress' characterisation of a 1920s was only made apparent because she actually said the year out loud. She saunters around with a swagger that is more modern than anything, and her voice fell into a predictable vocal pattern that when coupled with her obnoxious behaviour, soon becomes incredibly annoying. The script itself was poorly written; many of the lines between the two female leads were painfully forced and when delivered, gave the impression that the writer had no clue about how women talk(in general or to each other). My favourite moment has got to be when they were looking at the 'Easter eggs' and Helen's father gleefully exclaims ''and that was how Aphrodite made the lesbians!' The film in general lacked subtlety, making it hard to watch without some eye-rolling at the inevitable clichés and cheesiness. Even the intimate scenes sometimes felt cheap, with the exaggerated acting on the lead's part.

I know it is fictitious story and not a real one. But, come on! At least be realistic! Now, she has decided to suicide after she just met a person who is clearly trying to take her husband in a very very clear way the whole time of the movie? Also, the husband acting like he doesn't know what's happening and that it is not OK!!! Sorry but, all of that is not believable to be possible. At least, if that Russian girl at the end just said that she did not expect that she would do it, it would make it a bit more realistic. THIS IS EXCTLY WHY I SAY IT IS THE FICTITIOUS AND EXTREMELY BAD WRITING, ESPECIALLY, THE UNREALISTIC ENDING !!! Three stars and I chose 3 only for some Music covers and the beautiful filming place and the prestigious performance of the lead actress .. Other than these .. I see only failure .. Really.

I'm disappointed that the page for the movie gives no credit to the book Garden of Eden by Hemingway. The movie is very heavily based on the storyline of that book, taking whole passages and conversations almost verbatim. It is not one of his more famous novels, but it still seems unlikely that even a foreign release could get away with not crediting such an influential author. The movie itself is visually appealing and the production quality is pretty good. The acting is terrible though. Stiff and uninspired. I wouldn't have finished watching it had I not wanted to see if it ended the same way as the book. I do not recommend this movie overall.

This is almost the exact storyline of Ernest Hemingway's The Garden of Eden. The acting in the movie Ernest Hemingway's Garden of Eden (2008) was better, though there were more girl/girl scenes in this one. I thought this was the better story, but the acting was strange. The lead actor in"Sappho" was easily the best. If the rest of the cast had been taken from Garden of Eden and put into this movie perhaps it would get 4 or 5 stars. Like I said, the story could have been good, but the acting was mediocre and unlike Sappho and Phil, the chemistry between Helene and Phil was non-existent. This is more of a movie you would watch just to look at all the beauty in it. The actors, Avalon Barrie, the guy who played Phil, and the scenery--the island and all the cinematography. Not really a fan of the crazy lesbian commits suicide in a jealous rage story. It's a bit overused, but at least some other movies act it out better. If you're going to watch this movie, you must also watch "Ernest Hemingway's Garden of Eden" to laugh at the parallels and even verbatim quotes.

Not the best, but certainly not the worst movie dealing with lesbianism that I've ever seen. The acting was pretty poor, especially in the beginning and it was wrought with clichés (especially the awful crazy/dead lesbian one). But, it did have it's moments. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the soft colors. Sappho, played by Avalon Barrie, starts off as a very irritating character, but as you get further into the film, you start to realize that she's like that because she's always repressed who she really was and even when she's trying to break free of her old self, no one will take her seriously. I admit that the end of the film where she is rejected by Helena made me feel really bad for her. The ideas in this story are good, I just felt as if they weren't executed well enough.

Yet another lesbian drama (set, of course, on the Isle of Lesbos) where the "transgression" of lesbianism is punished by the death of at least one of them. The relative tedium of the movie is offset by the lovely scenery (oh, and the island's pretty, too), along with the amusingly bad acting of, well, pretty much everyone. So, to sum up: lovely women getting naked (good!); plot, acting, script, direction: bad! (Unfortunately, though, not bad enough to give it cult status.) I'd say that if you were stuck on a desert (Greek) island with just one movie, and it were "Sappho" ... oh, you poor thing. On the other hand, it might help you pass those long, lonely nights (just fast forward.)

I'm writing this note because somebody wrote a comment that this film is nothing we haven't seen before. Obviously, the writer's not from Ukraine and Russia, because this film is just everything we've never seen before - a beautiful tender tragic sexually-confused love story which at the end leaves everybody to make up their own minds. For us, Sappho is amazingly original and new. And amazingly popular in cinemas too. Thinkong about it, maybe the writer's not from America too, because recently I haven't seen any American movies this open and interesting and intelligent. So I guess he's from Mars. Or maybe some magical country where they only make good movies, and not stupid films like "Wanted".
