I wanted to like this movie a lot. Really. John Payne. Betty Grable. Edward Everett Horton. Cesar Romero. Harry James. Big Band. But Carmen Miranda's mangling the English language was hackneyed. And the jealousy Grable attempts to express sounds like preadolescent gibberish. Very little makes sense. Her reasons lack nuance and sophistication, just sounding like childish ranting. And Payne's expressions of devotion are all over the map.
Horton is the only character who seems to be able to think and express himself intelligently and articulately. Yeah, I know. That's the gag. But the dialogue between the three, Grable, Payne and Romero, leave us wondering.
And then Romero's concession declaration. Really? The best man won? Such an afterthought. Ugh.
I really wanted to like this one. Sigh.

This is one of those musicals, common in the 1930s & 40s, that was more of a display of orchestras than for plot development. In the 1930s & 40s many musicals were created for the purpose of displaying some famous orchestra. Such musicals showed little plot development. This is one such musical.
Charlotte Greenwood is given the opportunity several times to show her extraordinary ability for high kicking, but it was out of place with regard to the overall plot.
An excessive amount of time is given to Harry James and his orchestra. Harry James' character is totally inconsequential to the plot.
Helen Forrest sings a number that takes up several minutes, but does not appear in the film at any other time.
What plot development there is, is fairly interesting as Vicky Lane & Dan Christy jump in and our of love for each other, as other romantic relationships develop as well.

This is an ensemble comedy not crediting the great Jackie Gleason crediting the great Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Charlotte Greenwood, Cesar Romero, Harry James and Edward Everett Horton. The dance music of the big bands plays in two countries as the eight big names do comic routines standard of the era. A marvelous memory of what the forties were like and in many ways a bit of senior citizen nostalgia today preserved in technicolor for the younger to know wha life was like during world war two.

Wartime flick. Some great names... betty grable, edward horton, john payne, carmen miranda, cesar romero. Kind of a much ado about nothing. Dan and vicky have been performing together for years, but now there's trouble in paradise. When dan can't be found, vicky takes up with victor, and now dan is out in the cold. Horton is in here for comic relief, as the bartender. And somehow, they all end up at beautiful lake louise in canada. Keep an eye out for vicky's dresser, phoebe; that's deadpan charlotte greenwood; she and grable had just done moon over miami the year before. With bob cummings. And in this one, her director is irving cummings. Grable was married to harry james for years. He and his band are in here too. Even playing some of the same music from moon over miami. Sadly, grable died so young from cancer. This one is pretty good. Nothing too complicated. They had to make do during the war. Jackie gleason ten years before honeymooners!

Yes, this was indeed a fun and entertaining film with my favorites John Payne & Betty Grable. Music is terrific and dancing is fantastic. The Nicholas brothers do a fantastic number, and the orchestra is Harry James. Edward Everett Horton (related to me by marriage) is always a delight with his nervous mumbo jumbo and getting hooked by Carmen Miranda and her boys from Mexico. Song that stays in my mind is "I Got The Craziest Dream".

Nice musical with a very nice 1942 cast. Even a young Jackie Gleason appears as a producer.
The plot is true Hollywood with jealous Bette Grable confronting her fiancé and Broadway co-star over her constant jealousy. The guy in question is John Payne. Grable runs out and goes back to former dance partner and flame Cesar Romero. Payne vows to get her back so the two can do another show.
The action takes place in the Canadian Rockies and with the ever hilarious Carmen Miranda, this time as Rosita Murphy, who as always done an outstanding job in fracturing the English language. Her confusing of fever for favor and stating and how wonderful of her to make my acquaintance is Miranda at her best. As Grable's assistant, Charlotte Greenhut kicks up her great heels and wows us with those long, gawky legs.
Edward Everett Horton as Payne's valet is his erudite best self. He even participates in the ending dance sequence. Short on plot, the film is full of fun.
