Special Dead
United States
566 people rated When a zombie plague infects Camp Special Dude, a dude ranch for the mentally handicapped, a ragtag band of campers and counselors struggles to survive the night. Led by the indifferent, nun-chuck-wielding head counselor, Mac, and his wheelchair-bound sister Dale, the unlikely heroes fight their way off the mountain as, one by one, they're picked off and join the ranks of the walking dead. It's a campy stampede of blood, boobs and gore as some "very special" people show that they can kick some serious undead ass.

As a zombie movie fan, I bought "Special Dead" simply out of fascination for the entire concept. Let's face it, a camp for retarded people getting invaded by zombies - who wouldn't want to see that!? Not me!!! "Special Dead" is quite bluntly, fantastic fun.
As far as horror-comedy goes, it rates right up there with Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead II and Severance.
How can it not rate as highly when we are talking about a film that contains a zombie with Tourette's Syndrome, sex with a zombie, a frustrated toothless zombie, and a bunch of retards trying to stay alive (including a wheelchair-bound woman wielding an electric chainsaw!? It has to be mentioned that the film is also very well directed and written - quotes like "Holy Jesus's hairy nut-sack" spring to mind. But truly memorable, quality quotes are too numerous to mention here.
The death scenes are exceptionally well done too. Any movie that manages to include a zombie dying through a multiple popsicle-stick stomping must be praised.
Special mention has to go to the Editor (exceptional work) and the soundtrack. Particularly the soundtrack. If, by chance, your handicap is blindness (in which case I'm not quite sure how you're reading this review), then it's worth buying this film purely for the soundtrack! There are a couple of original tracks that are pure gold.
My only negative here goes to the acting ability of Jason Brubaker (Machiavelli Stone). All I can say is that he has the charisma of a car accident, and if only his character was played by someone who could pull it off (like Andrew Dice Clay for instance), then I would have rated this film a 10.
Regardless, Special Dead is tremendous fun. I can only hope that it gets the exposure it deserves, and if you have the chance to watch it, you will not be disappointed. For its genre, it really is a great film.

The is the perfect indie zombie film, I laughed my but off. The best way to describe this cult classic is: OUTSTANDING!!!!! I watched this by myself when I first got it in the mail and loved it. The next weekend, me and a bunch of my friends got together and watched it, it was even better. Since then I have watched it two more times and have not gotten tired of it. If you are a zombie fan and wanna laugh, get this movie, it will not disappointed, I promise. 10 stars all the way. I would one day love to see this on the big screen , with a bunch of fans spilling out of the seats. It would be like a Zombie Rocky Horror Picture Show. I call dibs on dressing like Dale Stone. "You are much more stupider, stupider than me Todd."

this movie was a lot of fun to watch and was better than expected. The more you drink the better it gets!. the are a lot of funny quotes that make this movie a classic. I compare it to the first Friday the 13th with a lot better dialog. Jay Brubaker definitely has a promising future and makes owning this DVD a must. the girls are definitely hot which make me looking for more * scenes, like when Mack was boning the zombie chick. or when the two girls are fighting, a top flying off wouldn't have been a bad thing. I was shocked on how hard it was to find this movie, net flix, blockbuster should be carrying this movie for rental, their is a huge market for these kinds of movies that is not being tapped. This is a guilty pleasure that should be more accessible.

I never even heard of this movie beyond stumbling upon it upon Amazon. I thought, hey this sounds great! A zombie film that seems on all levels of wrong! I was right and wrong...
I know this movie was made on a low budget, but come on! We live in the digital age here folks! I want to see what is happening, really I'm quite interested. It was so dark and granulated like something you might see on you tube or a twenty year old VHS.
Perhaps this movie didn't touch all that sets me off during a movie, I mean comparing this movie to Shaun of the Dead is quite unjust. I know I'm sounding kind of harsh here, Special Dead did have some very good moments and great handling of handicapped theme, but nun-chuck guy got on my nerves, he didn't have enough moxie to act that way. I felt it lacked some irony that make 'spoofs' like this funny. I was expecting him to get 'zombie' after showing his love for the dead with the zombie chick.
I did enjoy the misplaced criminal though, he really gave me a laugh with 'helmet girl'. I enjoyed some of the handicapped banter, and creative use of glue sticks for shutting up zombies. I'm sure there were even more funny moments in this film, but I really am hard pressed to remember them right now.
Perhaps it may grow on me if I were to watch it again, but hey, it is going in the right direction, fans of the genre should give it a try if only to say you watched it. Like films of this sort, make up your own mind.

That line made the entire movie worth the watch. The character of Todd Slater is off the hook funny. His relationship with Dale Stone is one of the funniest, cutest and weird relationships in film. Yeah, yeah, I know I am talking about a zombie film dealing with the mentally handicapped, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun and endearing characters. There is enough blood and gore in this movie to keep even the most hardcore zombie fans interested. But the movie does not take itself seriously and that is what makes the movie work. It knows it is a zombie comedy and it knows it is a low budget movie at that, but that is what makes the movie. Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny and even funny. That is the best way to describe this great zombie drive in movie.

At last - an original idea for a zombie film, well executed. The film is extremely funny - from the basic idea of retards being attacked by and turned into zombies, as well as how some of those characters are realised (the first character turned into a zombie, who appears throughout the film, is a scream - I couldn't stop laughing at his character). The soundtrack is awesome, I'm not sure if it is original or not, but it fit the movie perfectly. The campfire guitar song was very, very funny. Although obviously shot on a tiny budget, is very well executed. The make-up and effects are acceptable - I was a bit disappointed that most of the action took place at night, although I expect that this covered a lot of budgetary compromises. The acting (mostly) was above average for a cast of no-names. If you love politically incorrect zombie films, Special Dead is a must. Thoroughly recommended.

Im Special Dead zombies attack Camp Special Dude a campground for the mentally disabled. The campers and workers try to survive and escape led by the owners son who is the best comedy horror character since Ash. The other brilliant character is the guy who plays the guitar and throws in lyrics about what he'd like to do to various women - I couldn't resist using his best line as my review title.
The only thing really holding this movie back is the black character who adds nothing whatsoever to this film and just seems to be in it so equally rubbish rap music can swell up on the soundtrack. He's involved in a couple of amusing scenes but the only bits of this movie I actually found unpleasant to watch or offensive involved him. Laughing at spastics isn't very pc but in the context of this movie I found it fine, intimating that you are going to rape a woman you hijacked and the endless crap about guns isn't funny or really very interesting. If they'd cut that nonsense out I would have said this is a 7/10.
Despite this drawback The Special Dead is a great zombie movie full of funny scenes and amusing characters, it's definitely worth a watch.

Despite the title this film is really pretty charming and the most original zombie film I seen in ages. The gore is nice and grimy, different to the usual..
I couldn't believe how sensitive the attitudes were to the retards in the film. wtf?
There's a nice, genuine, 80s vibe flowing through the whole thing which just about does it, really. All the 90s and 00s zombie offerings were pretty dull. surely everyone's agreed on that.
this one rocks like shaun of the dead only much nastier and with hot girls.
definitely a 7 at least

I would love to give this movie more stars if I could only see what was going on! Why the release print is so dark is a mystery. I hope it can be fixed because this is a minor gem of satire, the type of film that the Politically Correct of the world loathe before they've even seen it.
The actors seem to love their molto-bizarro characters. Mark Bates as a Tourette's zombiehas his share of the funny moments, spewing out filth and bloodeverywhere. And David Reynolds sympathetically plays a bald ox of a zombie who literally loses his head in one of the most bizarre and mirth-inducing sequences in the film.
Weird people made this and weird people will like it. Now if the film can only be made more visible, it might attract a wider, weirder audience!
