I liked everything about Solitary Man except the main point of the story, to wit, men are bad and women are good. Men are stupid. Women are wise. Men are mean. Women are not. Or,perhaps, men are bad except for a few who may be good but not really very attractive.
It's too bad such an excellent cast was wasted on this script. Solitary Man reminds me of the Dutch film Antonia's Line. It's another well crafted, well cast, well acted, will shot, well edited film with a silly script. Again we see wonderful women and girls who live in a world where most of the men are stupid, violent and crass. The few men who don't fit that description are rather dull and compliant worshipers of the aforementioned women. Of course the sons of these women are good because unlike the majority of the members of their gender they have been reared in a matriarchy. Solitary Man and Antonia's Line have nothing in common except for their intellectual underpinnings.

Not worth watching. Very slow movie about a man disintegrating.

Never heard of the movie before watching it on TV (on a Sunday evening). I liked Douglas as a gifted actor ever since The China Syndrome and Fatal Attraction. He's made other gems like Traffic since then, but Solitary Man is a low-key hit worth seeing any other day than Sunday. Of course it helps that the movie is supported by such a big-names as Devito and Sarandon, however Douglas shines on his own here. The film subject must have not been an easy one to develop and sell probably because it speaks to a limited demographic segment. I don't understand why it cost $15 million to produce this, especially since it brought in only $5 million, but don't let that be a measure of anything other than poor marketing perhaps.

From my early childhood I admired Michael Douglas. There were so many movies I watched purely because of his performance.
"Solitary Man" is an excellent insight into the male ego slightly after the peak.
At some point in our lives, we all felt the need to adjust our age, lifestyle or interests to see "whether we still have it". The lead character tries to go back in time with a visit to his alma mater, mentoring a younger man and hanging out with young girls.
The consequences of his behavior are the essence of this movie.

Good movie , good story and Good acting. How success can be misleading. And what greed does. Many good actors are in it

So yes.. The main character is aging so he tries to deny it.. and it's pretty much all.. very few interesting scenes... It is a waste of time..

The story of this movie is only an excuse to introduce sexual addiction where only one individual have sexuality and women appears to pander its sexual desires as main funny puppets. Bad way to describe persons and respectful between persons. So what is the theme on this movie: there is not. No values, no relationship, no arguments, no dialog, no plot. Story is a way to make * without make *. Pathetic individual is only a means to insinuate perversions: less$$$=+sexual women made as bitches. The ability of director is to make this mystification: the no-story is an excuse to make a * movie. A classic scam movie as only Hollywood can promote perversions in its classic way.

The viewer must sit (or fast forward) through some pretty annoying material to get to the good part of this movie. If the ending had been the end of act one, so to speak, it could have been a great movie.

Hollywood, like the lead character in this movie deserves Zero viewers. Why pay hard earned money to watch a corrupt individual's despicable actions? From the onset of the movie it is clear the man is a womanizer, he shows more attention to a women in the diner that he's attending with his ex-wife and son, than he does to his flesh and blood son. I quickly alerted my wife, "the man is a womanizer". And the movie goes on to explicitly show how low of character the lead is, in a borderline pornographic way. The act that is the climax of the movie is despicable. I am highly disappointed with the movie "Solitary Man" -- it highlights the worst of human nature and it saddens me that millions of dollars were spent that could have influenced society in a positive way, but instead lower the bar to the savage level.
