I went to this movie expecting to see a trainwreck. To my great surprise, I enjoyed it immensely. I can't see how people can think this is a cliche'd plot, unless they're just plain tired of science fiction movies. Which is fine, but don't spoil it for the rest of us. Unfortunately, this movie has gotten such terrible reviews, I'm probably the only one who'll ever see it. I just want you all to remember: these are the people who told you to see "Titanic" and "The Horse Whisperer" -- they don't always know what you're going to like. See "Soldier" and decide for yourself, but please don't be afraid to give it a fair shot.

Soldier is a film about perhaps the most important human quality, that of the respect for life itself. The story deals with the evolution of Sgt. Todd, played excellently by Kurt Russell, and his awakening to human emotion. David Webb Peoples, who wrote the script, has managed to portray the complete dehumanization.Sgt. Todd is nothing but meat in the system,an expendable asset to be utilized. Taken from birth and molded into the perfect soldier,he knows only one thing,"Fear and Discipline". As the story unfolds Sgt. Todd learns things about himself and the people around him,compassion and frailty is not the same as weakness.The film is directed by Paul Anderson who has a great eye for both the spectacular and the intimate. The supporting cast is excellent,I especially liked Gary Busey as Sgt. Todd's C.O. The production value is very high, great special effects and sound design. Don't listen to what others are saying, see it.

this movie is ok if you like mindless action ,corny acting, and a very small plot !The special effects are decent considering this movie is from the director of"Event Horizon". The costumes are like something from a mad max movie .None of the soldiers talk ,so others tell them what to do.It eventually end up as a big shoot'em up movie with explosions all the place. I personally liked Russell better in "tango and cash""escape from la/new york" and "executive decision". It must see this movie leave your mind at the door for a no brainer action science fiction movie!!

I really enjoyed this movie. Kurt Russell turned in a strong performance despite limited dialog, reminding me of Stallone's performance in First Blood. I felt genuine sympathy for his character, Todd. Make no mistake, this isn't Gone With the Wind, but it's a very servicable sci-fi/action movie. I will certainly buy this one when/if it comes out on DVD.

Unlike the majority of the folks writing here, I really enjoyed this movie. It's a guy flick. Action, smack-talk ( in this case mostly through the actions/in-actions of Russel's character) and special effects. If you want great acting, go watch the latest Meryl Streep movie. I just don't understand people who go to a movie such as Soldier expecting to be overwhelmed by Oscar quality performances. These movies are made to be escapes from the usual humdrum not thought provoking masterpieces. Chill out and enjoy the mayhem.

I'm not going to try to make this out to be something it isn't. This is not a great movie. The special effects are mostly crap, and some are hilariously bad. Kurt Russell says 104 words in the whole movie, or almost $200,000 per word for his 20 million dollar payday for this train wreck. And it doesn't matter. I've probably seen it over a dozen times, and I love it. It's entertaining, and has enough action and violence to make it worth your time. Shut your brain off and ignore the naysayers, this is worthy. Kurt is completely jacked and definitely looks the part. And even though he says next to nothing during the whole thing, his brief halftime speech before he goes and kills everyone gives me a chill, every time. Like I said, it's not a great movie though. It is, however, a really good time.

I fell in love with this silent action drama. Kurt Russell and only Kurt Russell could have played this so well. Raised from childhood to know nothing but war and fighting, Todd (Kurt Russell) is dumped on a planet after being made obsolete by genetically engineered soldiers. The stage is set and another classic icon of action movies was born - SOLDIER. Not Rambo, not Schwarzenegger, not Bruce Willis, not Mel Gibson, not Jason Statham - Kurt Russell owns this role and made it entirely his - original, daring, and all too human. Soldier is a simple and easy movie to watch. The good. Finally, a script that introduce a character without visible emotions and of little words that stays with it. An audience expect these flesh machines to become more human, but it's illogical. This flick doesn't pander to those desires and make good use of it. That's great continuity. Nice action. Good concepts and ideas. Well designed planet. Interesting story. The actors. Kurt Russell is perfect for that role. The bad. The spaceship special effects are showing their age a bit, but they're still acceptable. The combat scenes are nice to watch, but lack realism. The ugly. The wars during the introduction are very weak. Fortunately, it's a short moment to pass through. The result. A nice action film for a some good entertainment. If you're a Russell fan, it's a must.

I bought the Laser Disk of this movie and watched it for the first time last night. I thought it was pretty cool, and the audio commentary by the director, producer and co-star was first rate. Highly recommended purchase on LD, or DVD. And if you have a Pro-logic or Ac3 amp it sounds brilliant.
