This converted me into the Church of cannibalism Totally awesome horror-film. Felt like I was there! Just a shame this wasn't in HD because the chick is pretty. It totally deserved the bigger format. Can't wait to see more from the director!

MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD is the story of Susan Stevenson (Ursula Andress), her quest for her missing husband, Henry, and the unexpected hell she must endure. Arriving in New Guinea, and accompanied by her brother (Antonio Marsina), Susan seeks out Professor Foster (Stacy Keach), who assembles a team to take them to the mysterious island where Henry disappeared. This takes them through dense jungles and treacherous waters, to the legendary mountain of the title. Several real animal killings occur, as was the craze in these sort of films in this era. Repellent and unnecessary, it's difficult to see them as valid in any way. Then, the group realizes they're being followed, and begin suffering from attrition. After many deadly twists and turns, Susan and company wind up in the middle of an unbelievable nightmare. This is the incredible, insane, and highly controversial finale. Filled with graphic violence, male and female ff-nudity, and unspeakable human / animal interaction, this ending is hard to watch, though almost impossible to turn away from! Ms. Andress is amazing, and takes her role to its limit! MOTCG is one of the best of these films, and I personally prefer it to CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, which it predates...

Potential viewers, beware, because some prints of this movie, including the one that I watched, completely eliminate the Ursula Andress * sequences. But even if you get to see an uncut version, chances are you'll still fall asleep long before the movie reaches the end. There isn't much action or anything else exciting in the movie - most of the movie consists of the protagonists making a (very) long slog through jungle terrain. What's worse is that the protagonists are very annoying and unlikable people, especially Antonio Marsina, who plays the brother of Andress' character. And you'll wonder why someone as talented as Stacy Keach is doing here. Hopefully he was just there for the money, and also maybe because his character makes his exit some time before the end. I think even fans of Italian cannibal movies made around this time will find this movie a big bore.

Bond girl Ursula Andress plays Susan Stevenson who travels to New Guinea with her brother Arthur Weisser (Antonio Marsina) to look for her husband, Professor Henry Stevenson (Tom Felleghy, uncredited) who has disappeared in the jungle and hasn't been heard from for weeks. They persuade a Professor named Edward Foster (Stacy Keach) to guide them into the jungle and help them look for the lost man. On their adventures they come across a guy named Manolo (Claudio Cassinelli) who decides to travel with them as they are all banished from Father Moses (Franco Fantasia) peaceful village he has set up with some of the local natives, lots of animal cruelty and the odd cannibal, however the cannibals don't really make an appearance until the final third of the film. But it turns out they could each be there for very different rather selfish reasons than first hinted at. Co-written and directed by Sergino Martino I rather liked this, nice authentic jungle locations that create good atmosphere, shot quite well too, with really nice colourful widescreen photography by Giancarlo Ferrando). The script by Martino and Cesare Frugoni moves along at a pretty good pace, it certainly keeps the story moving along nicely and tries to add the odd twist here and there, whether it succeeds will probably depend on how many of these types of films you've seen before. The effects are pretty good too, there's some fairly impressive gore, rotten bodies, intestine eating, spearing, decapitations, someone is attacked and eaten by an Alligator and at the end Andress is stripped and has her dead husbands rotting flesh smeared all over her body, nice. Like most of the other Italian made cannibal films Mountain of the Cannibal God contains a fair amount of real animal cruelty, including various animals fighting and eating each other in unnecessary detail, a lizard is skinned and gutted, some snakes are torn to pieces and a tarantula is chopped in half by a machete so be warned! There are also pleasing amounts of nudity as well. Overall the film is very well made and seems to have good production values courtesy of Massimo Antonello Geleng. The down side would be the rather slow pace at a couple of points here and there, and if your an animal lover forget it!

Apparently the uncut version of this is banned in Australia, so I was very interested to check it out. In our basic story, we have Susan (played by Ursula Andress, who was apparently in her forties when she made this) and her annoying brother Arthur, who wish to go on a secret expedition in the New Guinea jungle to find her husband who has been missing. They meet up with a friend of her husbands who believes where he might be, but it's believed he is on a cursed mountain, which we come to learn is called the Mountain of the Cannibal God. This movie is really beautifully shot. Many of the scenes look like something out of the national geographic channel. The scenery is stunning in parts. Really gorgeous. The acting is also really good, something that I'm not used to with Cannibal flicks. And when we finally meet our Cannibals, they are really scary looking dudes. The masks they wear was a nice touch. Really creepy. Though of course, you can still expect the animal cruelty, which is rampant throughout the whole film. I think this one has the most animal cruelty scenes. It gets pretty unbearable, so animal lovers beware. However, for the most part during the movie, I kept thinking to myself, "This is a gorgeous movie, I loving it, but I don't understand why it's so extreme to be banned. Sure the animal scenes are cruel, but it's a bit tame compared to the other flicks...." Well, I hadn't gotten to the ending yet. Trust me, my jaw hit the floor during the end. It actually gets pretty damn scary at the end. Like a more extreme version of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Those interested in extreme cinema can expect some really graphic scenes including a bestiality scene. Damn! Final thoughts? Yeah, this one was a really good one. Looked quite expensive to make as well. I found myself very much engrossed in the whole thing. For a Cannibal exploitation movie, it's very well made and highly captivating. Highly recommended!

The Mountain of the Cannibal God (1978) *** (out of 4) Italian cannibal flick has a wife (Ursula Andress) hiring a man (Stacy Keach) to take her through the New Guinea jungle after her husband went missing on an expedition. Soon the group are battling the wildlife as well as a cannibal tribe that were thought to have gone extinct. Sergio Martino's THE MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD contains the same nasty stuff that most films in the genre have but this here is slightly different in the fact that it contains some very familiar faces. Andress certainly had come a long way since her DR. NO days but I must admit that I really enjoyed seeing her here. Even though she was 43-years-old at the time of filming, the actress looks absolutely beautiful and it was fun seeing her give it her all in regards to not only the nudity but also going around in dirty water and dealing with countless things including a large python at one point. It was also fun watching Keach here who is as calm and collective no matter what he's doing. The two of them certainly help keep the film moving and it's fun seeing them in an exploitation film like this. Martino actually does a nice job in the directing department as he at least brings some style to the film and doesn't forget to deliver on the trash. Those against animal killings are going to want to avoid this as there's some pretty graphic stuff going on here. The movie also offers up some pretty graphic violence towards humans and the uncut version of the film features a pig rape and other sexual natured stuff. In fact, I'd say go with the slightly shorter version to miss this trash. As with most in the genre, I think the films work best if you look at them as jungle adventures and on that level the locations and the drama behind the various attacks make the film worth viewing. Of course, most stomachs aren't going to be able to take it.

"Slave of the Cannibal God" is a cannibal film. This genre followed the "Mondo" craze of the '60s, which were basically a series of mostly Italian pretend-documentaries that purported to show the cruelty and depravity of nature, and the barbarism of native peoples, but instead only demonstrated the ruthlessness and greed of the filmmakers, staging as they did horrifying acts of animal cruelty and sacrifice for the cameras. The cannibal film basically took all those aspects but threw away the pretence of documentary. They were fictional films that did perhaps introduce new standards for the realism of graphic violence in film, and tastelessness/racism in the depiction of foreign cultures. They would be entertaining exploitation movies if not for the fact that they just would not do away with the animal cruelty. Maybe a couple of them did, but by and large, cannibal film and actual animal death go hand in hand, for no better reason than perhaps that the "Mondo" films had demonstrated that they could get away with it. Take "Slave of the Cannibal God", for example. In one scene we see (if we can manage to keep watching) a snake slowly encircling and crushing to death a small monkey. Oh, how cruel mother nature can be. Except of course for the fact that you can clearly see the mechanism used to launch the monkey into the snake's grasp. They probably angled it to make absolutely sure the monkey couldn't possibly escape. It probably took them several tries to get it right. But that monkey HAD to die, right? And in a horrible way? You're marked for death, our little friend. The filmmakers say so. Like I said, actual animal death/cruelty goes hand-in-hand with cannibal films. Other than that, "Cannibal God" is an absolutely run-of-the-mill cannibal flick. You know the deal: clueless whites go to some jungle someplace to disprove rumours that cannibals exist there. They meet a surprisingly friendly tribe... but the real cannibals lurk just around the corner, they get kidnapped, some graphic violence happens, they escape, the end. What the hell was Stacy Keach, a great actor, doing in this drivel? Shame on him, but mostly - shame on the filmmakers.
