I don't know how this movie doesn't have at least an 8.0 on IMDB. This movie came out when I was a kid and I wore out the videotape. At its heart, it is a story about love, acceptance and redemption. Yes, there are religious overtones, but they are not overbearing or in your face. Instead it focuses on the true good of spirituality in its portrayal of what religion should be...a place for comfort and fellowship. The music is fantastic and there are so many laughs. I was raised a good little Protestant girl and although this story is Catholic in its origins, I appreciated the similarities in the religions rather than the differences even at the young age of 10. The religious thing didn't take for me as an adult, but I can still watch this movie and laugh, enjoy the music, and feel the joy it brings to my soul.
