Mia (Virginia Gardner) is turning 18 and aging out of her foster care home. She intends to secretly go searching for her birth mom in Spain. While photographing nature, she spots Kyle (Alex Aiono) ready to commit suicide. She forces her way into his life and ropes him into her trip. He survived a car crash which left his friend crippled and another person dead. The guilt is crushing him.
Mia is the standard Manic Pixie Dream Girl dialed up to eleven. I can take that but this movie starts with two more problems. First, it's Kyle's attempted suicide. It's too dark. It almost crushes the romance in comparison to his depressing back story. The other issue is the coincidence of their first meeting. Despite its dark content, the movie tries to make it into a meet-cute. It's all too much. There is a way to pull together the initial meeting with the big reveal. She needs to be stalking him. That would make much more sense.

Two strangers: Mia, an orphaned girl, and Kyle, a boy reeling from the guilt of a fatal accident, hit the road to find Mia's biological mother. The characters are likeable, their journey is all fun and the Spanish scenery is just beautiful. The story is emotional and a little bit of a tearjerker, too.
Unlike recent YA movies (After, Through My Window, Beautiful Disaster, My Fault), this one is not centered on fighting & sex scenes; instead, it gives off the vibes of good old romances about young love from several years ago. It's the right choice if you want to watch something sweet & cute at the weekend or on a Friday night.
