This remake of the James Caan original is just downright terrible. A mismash of a story line that makes very little sense at all. Chris Klein, who is a decent comedy actor, does not make a convincing action star, and certainly is not convincing as a extreme sports star. In this remake, Klein travels to Central Asia to become a star in rollerball, a sport that makes no sense considering the filmmakers make no effort to explain the game or to shoot or edit the sports matches so that we have any idea who is winning or what is going on in the game. In fact, the entire story is such a mess that attempting to follow the plot just leads to severe migrane headaches on the part of the viewer.. ignore this film at all costs. GRADE: F

This is actually one of the best five Hollywood movies from 2002. The film Verhoeven always dreamed of making. Only superfluous thing about it: remnants of plot and morality. The rest is speed and noise, sex and violence. Great stuff, really.

*** SPOILERS***
I just saw Rollerball today on the day it opened, and it was a really cool movie!!! The movie is about Jonathan (Chris Klein) and his buddy Marcus Ridley (LL Cool J), who participate in the popular sport, Rollerball, which contains a small metal ball, and hitting domes to score points. In the game you skate on rollerblades, and sometimes you ride motorcylces. Jonathan and Marcus have made a lot of money, and now they find that the sport coaches and players are trying to kill or hurt the players on the team to get better ratings for the sport on television.
This movie was ***really*** entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat. This movie was truly not boring at all, and the director was great at the directing. Also, the whole story itself was written greatly. This was a brilliant action movie. Chris Klein, LL Cool J, Jean Reno, Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, and Pink were brilliant and great!!! I highly recommend this movie!!! I give Rollerball a 10 out of 10!!!!!! :)

i thought i give it a shoot.
john mc tiernan's starting to loose his light after die hard 2, dimmed in the medicine man, getting worse in last action hero, and keep on getting worse.
rollerball suppose to be another try out just to prove what potential can still be left of him.
nothing.
bad script, weak casts, not even a single interesting approach or style or even camera angle. the soundtracks sucks, the action blunt, it's such a blunder.
the characters undeveloped, even the rules of the game (which was suppose to be there) was not informed to the audience.
there's no connection between the audience and the characters, and seems the director fails to deliver any message or so whatever. such a failure. mr mc tiernan, you flunked big on this one.
a great weekdays movie to be watched whilst you're browsing or hang around with your lousy neighbour...

The violence is Rollerball is extreme, but it's not particularly good or impactful. It's just violent.

Remake of the 1975 cult classic, which starred James Caan, this version is set in the present day Kazakhstan (well, 2005 to be precise).
Very poor movie. I like LL so he was one of the few thing points of interest to me. Jean Reno is a great actor but he fails to completely lose his French accent here, surely this must rate very low down on his CV. Rebecca Romijn looks good as the lead female, sadly the same can't be said for Chris Klein, he looks completely lame in the lead male role.
There's plenty of violent action but it gets pretty messy and boring, Slipknot performing on stage at one of the venues did briefly stimulate my interest. Waste of time, watch the original instead.

Rollerball (4 out of 5 stars)
Rollerball is a science fiction remake about a futuristic sport were tyrants are trying to increase the sport rating by having violent events. Chris Klein takes on the main character and did a decent job. The cast is good. Nothing award winning performances. There is plenty of mindless action to make this entertaining. It is bloody and brutal. The costumes of the sports teams are cheesy and weird. The plot is good. The soundtrack is heavy metal rock that is good. If your looking for a mindless action movie. This would definitely be recommended.

Why? The original had at least cult classic status. This doesn't improve on the plot or the cast. Caan had at least the right aura of subdued possible menace to handle the role, this guy Klein? izzathisname? has the same contact sport star quality as Woody Allen. Rebecca Romijn does OK in her role, don't know if it's talent or just they it's cut to fit her. Wouldn't it be interesting to have refabricated the movie around her character? Oh well. The murky supranational conglomerate politicoeconomic subtext seems even murkier in this version than the original, to the point of boredom. Or maybe it's just not saying anything more than the original said.

Take a classic movie, remove all the good elements including its soul and you are left with the incredibly unnecessary Rollercrap 2002!
Well done guys you nailed it!!!
Tiernan should send a hand written letter of apology anytime someone watches this.
