First of all,you should see this movie in the original version. Why?Because it's based in Japanese culture and folklore. And,the remake won't give you the same feeling at all. It's Japanese.See it in Japanese. The basic plot is as follows;a short video clip is said to be shown on a local TV-station every now and then and anyone who sees it will die, within 7 days.Basically, all the victims seem to have died from plain terror, they are found with horrid expressions on their faces. Most of them are teenage girls. When journalist Reiko's cousin dies after seeing it,she decides to defy her fears and investigate the story to the full, helped by her ex-husband. What begins as sheer curiosity soon becomes a race for her own and her son's life. She discovers connections to a tale of a child with special and horrifying powers who met a dreadful end.I love Ringu.Psychological drama is mixed with good old horror movie dramaturgy to a nearly perfect horror blend.

Anyone that knows me, also knows that I would never consider a remake to be as good as the original. Maybe one day, but not so far, and never a remake of an Asian film. Hideo Nakata's direction and Hiroshi Takahashi's screenplay are excellent, and Nanako Matsushima was fantastic. Hiroyuki Sanada (Rush Hour 3, The Last Samurai, The White Countess) gave a brilliant performance as the cool, calm ex-husband opposite Matsushima's excitable performance. The special effects were just right and the story was captivating. I really enjoyed this film.

I saw the American remake first and loved it. So naturally, the original would probably fail to impress me as I've seen it done already and on a higher budget, right? Wrong. The original deserves all the respect and praise it gets. There are several elements it does better than the remake: this includes the video which is far more psychologically disturbing and Sadako herself, whose scenes represent the pinnacle of horror. Our two leads are also pretty likable, though the son is unfortunately the creepy zombie I disliked in the remake. I'm sure some people won't be scared by this, especially since it s an older movie with a plot most are well versed in by now. But this movie must get credit for just how groundbreaking it was at the time. Personally, I think it holds up really well, considering I only saw it for the first time recently.

Even for a Japanese film this film is slow. The pacing of the film drains off much of the fear that should be there in a story that could happen to anyone of us who watches video. In some ways this film is slightly better than the remake if only in the fact that its lack of fancy special effects makes it seem like its happening right there in front of you. (SPOILER:certainly the out of the TV scene is better here. END SPOILER) Ultimately this is an over rated film who's power comes not from the images and storytelling but rather from the fact that we are all potential victims of a tape that kills after viewing. I suppose that years ago the story would have been of a book that kills. This isn't to say that its a bad film, its not. Its just not the genre changing one that many of us who love horror films had been led to believe it was.

Teenagers Masami and Tomoko talk about a videotape that kills you a week after viewing it. Tomoko dies with a horrified expression and Masami goes insane. TV reporter Reiko Asakawa is investigating the killer videotape and is shocked by her niece Tomoko's death. Tomoko and three friends had rented a cabin in Izu. Reiko goes to Izu and retrieves the videotape. She watches the tape herself setting off the cycle once again. I watched the American version before the Japanese original. I think it actually helped me follow the story because the American movie essentially copied the Japanese movie. This one is not quite as polished as the American version. However it has the same moody atmosphere if not more. This is an effective ghostly horror no matter which version.

Yep, I like this one a lot, and I think it lived up to the hype. I'm a huge horror fan and I've seen everything: Cheezy monsterfests, 80's slashers, Italian potboilers, giallos, gorefests, and finally psychological creepouts. The latter best describes "Ring." It has the ability to get under your skin without spilling a single drop of blood, slowly building to a really, REALLY creepy climactic scene....You have to understand that it's no "Scream" or "Urban Legend." This is no in-jokey, Kids of the WB starring lump of pop-bubblegum. It's a refreshingly serious, somber, well, "ghost story" in the vein of, yes, "The Sixth Sense." If you didn't like that film, skip "Ring." You certainly won't like it, go rent something with Josh Jackson or James Van Der Beek....and if you don't want to read subtitles, go watch "Dude, Where's My Car?" But if you want to see a film that may very well make you leave the lights on, you can't lose with this one!

Ringu is an excellent horror film. I am usually prejudice when it comes to watching foreign films let alone horror films. They are usually overacted and have a story I cannot figure out. Ringu is different. First of it is by far superior to the American version the Ring. Even with subtitles the story The story and the acting are first rate. Rent this before even thinking about renting the U.S. version The Ring. This is the original. Here I only thought the Japanese could make Godzilla and samuri movies. Boy was I mistaken. This is worth renting. The horror is subtle and yet shocking. This movie will grab you and hold your attention. You will be too afraid to look away and yet almost too afraid to watch. This is damn fine movie making. It's Suspenseful, scary, frightening and then some. Rent it now! You won't be disappointed.

Well, Its not easy to get someone scared these days, the last time i went to see the new exorcist movie at a movie theater (This new 2000 added scenes version) people were laughing when the scary scenes came by, I really hated that, how come this people be so cynical and just not care about what was going on the screen. I though the genere was dead. Now, I had heard a lot about this movie called "Ring" on the internet and the imdb, people said it was so scary it made Blair witch look like kids stuff,They were right. Ring is one of the creepiest movies i´ve seen in my life, it keeps you on the corner of your seat until the end of it. The ending is so horrifying my girlfriend was not watching it, if you have a chance go to your nearest independent film video and get it. You wount sleep at least for a night.
