Radium Girls

Radium girls has strong potential storyline wise, it's historical and mostly unknown. The medical effects on the girls is horrific and the coverup sensational. However, this movie is plagued by bad acting, a low budget, and a meandering story. With so much going on why are there so many filler scenes? The flashes of old time footage were unnecessary and most of the conversations were pointless.

They had an entire book to go off of that was truly a story better than fiction and seemed instead to almost make an effort to flout historical anything and write a weirdly modern feeling teenage activist movie with an embarrassingly childish and overt leftist theme. They mixed in weird progressive subplots that had nothing to do with the actual fight the story focused on and did absolute no justice to the true fight of a score of women who fought in court with dignity and bravery despite incredible odds. The story needed no embellishment and yet the writers made it infinitely worse of a story while retaining none of the true historical (and feminist, and at the time progressive) context and events. Embarrassing so embarrassing. Anti intellectualism at its finest

Its a historical drama of factual happenings, though its a bit dulled and dragged out. its a film about workers occupational safety, and as this was not the first case, it became the most important in form of changes, amount of compensation, and a wake up call to the common citizen that things that we surrounds us with maybe harmful and lethal. lead is another stroven issue of the topic, as painters and dental assistants had a death statistic that are miles above the average. i once had a patient where the lead in the paint he used in his daily work, litterally ate out/away his brain tissue, and the result was severe dementia, and eventually paralysis and death. symptomatology like syphilis here too, but it was eventually proven not to be. production wise its cool with the vintage filmclips in between, and the production design are good. acting on average. i think the makeup artists couldve been far more cruel visually, cause the workers looks no more than redfeverish and mumpsy in their faces. our beloved film reviewer roger ebert(r.i.p.) had some jaw issues due to other reasons, but thats how the worst case scenario should have been illustrated. so if your afaraid of the dangers of occupational hazards in your workplace, then rise up and tell about it. it may serve as a lifesaver to many... a recommended film to view thinks the dizzy grumpy old man after a nightshift rubbing my hands and arms with 80% alcohol 150 times pr watch, how does my epidermis and liver react to that...?

Where to start? The real story of these women and their struggle against an industry that silenced them should be easy enough for the most struggling writers out there to flesh out a film - by simply researching the facts. Yet, over and over again modern themes kept rearing its ugly head with the focus switched to police brutality and the plight of African Americans - which has literally nothing to do with the girls working for radium industry. The acting, along with the writing and direction, is third rate. All in all, in my opinion, this was very poor service to a chapter in US history that deserves a talented spotlight on it.

I'm so upset by how HORRIBLE this film is. This is *such* an important story and this stupid movie is filmed like an after school special with dumb 'old timey' clips added throughout. Why? First - they film the MAIN point of how these women/girls used the brushes incorrectly. WHY would they lick the brush AFTER dipping it in radium??? I mean, why not have them eat it with a spoon.... ????? They would put the brush in their mouths to create the 'point' and then dip it in the radium. I mean, come on, use some common sense. These poor women had their bodies WRECKED by radium. Not just bruises and puffy faces. Why didn't they show, or talk, about any of that? Ridiculous. Whoever wrote this dreck - and the directors - did the real Radium Girls a huge disservice by not treating this story with respect. I'm actually MAD after watching that horrible movie. Those women deserved so much more when having their stories told.....everyone involved in this movie should be ashamed of themselves. Listen to the My Favorite Murder episode about the Radium Girls to get a much better representation of what happened.

Watching this was tedious, it just wasn't well done in any way. My main problem is the way they painted the dials. Any logical person would think if you're going to point the brush bristles, you'd need to do it BEFORE dipping it into the radium. And it has been well documented that they always do "lip, dip, paint." Through out the movie they had the women dip THEN lick, leaving a glob of radium in the mouth and less on the brush. That doesn't make any sense, they'd be wasting radium which they were VERY strict with the amount that was allotted to each person/day. If they get this main important fact incredibly wrong, the rest just feels like fictional Hollywood garbage.

Read the book, don't waste your time with this movie!

Good information about a piece of history. Didn't like the fact that they threw politics into the scene with trying to push COMMUNISM AS A HELPFUL SOURCE. COMMUNISM IS A LIE. As someone who's been to Cuba 40 times over 20 years (charity work), and stayed outside the tourist zone in Regla-Guanabacoa, I recommend that everyone fight TOOTH and NAIL AGAINST socialism/communism. ON PAPER is looks ideal, beautiful, genius even. But, in reality, it turns into a police state, all freedoms, liberties & opportunity gone. It is hell on earth. It sets back humanity. It's a lie.
