I saw this movie in a sneak preview. I endured this movie for way too long, because I had been invested in a full bag of popcorn for myself. Not knowing the director, I would have bet, that it had been another pointless Jim Jarmusch movie or been directed by a zombie Fassbinder. Even surveillance camera footage is more interesting than this piece of garbage. Sorry for the strong words, but this movie is a total waste of time. The only noticeable points have been Anna Hathaway trying to get rid of her nice-girl image - fatally reminding me of the attempt of Sandra Bullock in that "28 Days" movie - and Debra Winger getting re-animated as actress in a side-role as her mother.

the main character was played badly. the script does not have any depth and no impact on the viewers. actually none of the characters do! I think they spend less than 10K on this movie, it more looks like a home made movie of an unfamiliar someone, with some problematic children which you finally do not get why and when? the obsession with multiculturalism was absolutely unnecessary and it was shallow. this movie is a mixture of all but nothing. no reason what so ever why a so called "psychologist" cannot deal with it's own challenges. This movie is not a drama and not a comedy.
don't watch this movie that's my best advice not even rent it !

This movie is utter crap. It is a waste of time and the kind of movie that can end a great actor/actress' career (much like "Medellin" was for Vince in Entourage). I understand why it is only the first script of Jenny Lurnet's to get made into a movie and I hope it is the last. The fact that it was written in seven weeks should have been a warning sign. It is the kind of film that is so bad that you keep watching and waiting for it to make a return and save the experience, but alas we were left waiting. How this was nominated for anything is beyond me!!! I also am not sure why people are giving it high ratings and saying how fantastic it is when you have to be on as many drugs as Anne's character to enjoy it. Please Anne, don't do any more rubbish films like this again.

This movie is typical of today's self-indulgent Hollywood. Very boring and poorly written. Excruciating in detail and inane conversation. Lengthy wedding toasts by way too many guests. The whole thing seemed to slough by in real time. The diverse assemblage of guests was unbelievable anywhere except in a Hollywood director's mind. It made no sense as to why the wedding took place in Indian culture while the bride was typically white and the groom was black American but with Jamaican friends and a best man from Hawaii and had a wedding reception with Jewish customs. Anne Hathaway's performance was the only good feature of movie, but it was overdone, unresolved and didn't ring quite true. Sorry, big waste of time and an Academy Award.

I'm just about finished watching this disaster on DVD. I hate all of them. I hate the plot. It's shallow and contrived and boring and if it doesn't stop soon I will have to hit 'pause' or just gouge out my eyes.
Pointless and stupid. About the worst movie I've seen this year. AH isn't bad but the rest of the movie doesn't make up for her.
If it's a comment on drug abuse I don't get it.
If it's a comment on weddings and traditions I don't get it.
Can't someone comb her father's hair??
Terrible.
I can't imagine that the writer and the director managed to convince people that this was a useful purpose of time, effort and money.

Yes by golly – Rachel Getting Married - rip my eyes out and drip molten lead into their socket. I think cleaning between my toes or picking lint out of my naval would be more exciting. To think that money is actually charged for crap like this
sheesh. Anyways - I highly recommend this flick for those who love to watch paint dry. Well I need to put ten lines here and can not write anymore on this flick. I couldn't wait for it to come to an end...that is always a good thing to say about a movie. Funny how one of allegedly funny parts is watching some boob admit that he does not know how to load a dishwasher...give me a break.

Coming out of rehab to attend her sister's wedding, a woman ends up opening up old family wounds.
From what I've read, this is very much a love-it or hate-it movie. It bored some people and irritated others, and I can see why. Those who found much of it dull are probably used to more conventional Hollywood films that use less subtle methods to grab their attention. Those who were annoyed simply lacked the sense of empathy the film shows towards its characters. Me, I found it engrossing and immensely moving, and the main reason is that it's about family. Even though it wasn't mine, I could relate to the way the characters behaved. It helps that the actors - particularly Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Bill Irwin - turn in very real performances.

this movie should have been much shorter. I think there was only enough material to make a movie that was a little over 60 minutes, therefore, the writer and director added so much nonsensical filler, it made the movie too boring. There are extended scenes of the dancing at the wedding and the dishwasher challenge. It just lasted too long.
Anne Hathaway was good at this and I see why she got some award nominations. She plays a very needy, attention seeker whom is home for a few days from rehab to attend her sister's wedding. The whole time there she wants to have the attention and eventually her sister gets ticked off. Also, we learn that she was responsible for her younger brother's death.
FINAL VERDICT: Scenes are dragged out unnecessarily. It was too long.I don't think it is good enough to recommend.

I am certainly glad I don't pay attention to other's comments, because I was watching a completely different movie.
Anne Hathaway, Oscar nominee, Golden Globe nominee, and winner of just about every critics award for her performance in this film, was magnificent as the junkie sister that comes home to a dysfunctional family for a wedding.
The film itself, was one of the very best of 2008. Jonathan Demme did a marvelous job with Jenny Lumet magnificent script.
The entire cast came up against some incredible competition this year in Milk, The Dark Knight, and Synechdoce, New York, but was still fantastic, with Rosemarie DeWitt, Bill Irwin, Tunde Adebimpe, Mather Zickel, Anna Deavere Smith, Anisa George, and Debra Winger along with Hathaway.
I really felt like I was a fly on the wall watching a real family deal with their pent up emotions over a sister that was totally self-absorbed.
Amazing!
