I am not sure what's great about this movie. Foul language, lost youth and substantial part of the movie in local language makes it difficult to understand for non-punjabi speakers. It seems the unnecessary hype by media and filmmakers got this movie "udta" ratings here. I wish there were 0/10 option for me to vote. Firstly, the movie does not have continuous story, it just runs in parallel. I still have no idea what keeps Tommy Singh changing his mind every now and then. Also the influence of drugs depicted in this movie is not good for society. The story writer tries to present that two people can change the system but I am not sure than even 2000 people can do that in India. So to say that this movie is close to reality is not something most people will buy-in.

Still not watching !!!...go now and watch it...Yes UDTA PUNJAB is a one of the best movie of Bollywood. After finally cleared by Bombay high court with the cuts reduced from 89 to 1 today Udta Punjab released all over India. Thanks to Indian Censor Board...they make the film famous in all over India. Acting is marvelous. But it is very sad for the Udta Punjab team that it has been already leaked in torrent. I request to torrent down-loader..please watch it in cinema hall as the sound and picture quality are not so clear in torrent uploading video. Anyway the story is about mainly on drugs. The film shows first different plots and then emerged into one plot.
Shahid Kapoor acting as Tommy Singh; one of the most famous singer of Punjab. But without consuming drugs; Tommy Singh unable to create music.
Diljit Dosanjh acting as Sartaj Singh; a police inspector who gives permission to illegal transport by taking money i.e., corruption officer.
Kareena Kapoor as Dr. Preet Sahni; always helps others and complete against drugs, corruption.
Alia Bhatt as Kumari Pinky; the girl from Bihar accidentally found 2kg powder packet of drugs and her life changes when coming to sell to a drug driller.
Story goes on and then suddenly their life turn into a different track. Tommy Singh arrested in his birthday party, Sartaj Singh found his brother in hospital under the guidance of Dr Preet Singh, Kumari Pinky met Tommy one night and.........sorry i can't describe everything. You should go to theater and watch it.
What an acting..! Shahid, Alia, Kareena, Diljit everyone show their best performance. Diljit's brother performance is great. He perfectly played his role. Thank you director Abhishek Chaubey to give such a movie. I give 9/10 rating as i think there can be a more better ending.

First of all I would like to say I want to salute the Udta Punjab team for making such good movie with social message. The movie really portrays the fact on how the drug abuse are being elevated these days and what are the root causes which we should take into our consideration to end this. Apart from the social message, watching the movie was fun. Each of the actors have done a real great job and total justice to their role. The story is also good. In spite of the fact that the movie is being leaked, I would really urge all of you guys to go to the theaters and watch this movie; so that more of these kind of movies are being made in Bollywood.

What a saga of a serious issue with the backdrop of punjab .Very realistic and a bold movie ,it deserves 10/10 for the effort . Kudos Phantom and Abhishek Choubey Diljit is outstanding Shahid yet again proves his range he is a very underrated actor , he shows his versatile side in this movie Kareena kapoor is again in a strong role and anyone could fall in love with her . Alia impresses After a long time a gripping movie with solid substance . I thought it could have been made with less negative things but its OK as it justifies the degree of prob well done again Phantom team . I hope we get more acceptance to such movies commercially

I and my friends were looking forward to the release of the movie on one of the foremost issues facing the youth in India and its inadequate handling by the authorities.
The movie was widely touted as a commentary and a revelation about a social challenge (drug abuse) facing the modern state of Punjab in India. An avid viewer would have hoped for handling of the issue something like a Requiem for a Dream (dark lives of abusers) or perhaps Benicio Del Toro starrer "Traffic" (questioning the handling or even complicity of the system), instead one is disappointed to find that the movie is more about its sale-ability than anything else!!
Perhaps director should have focused more on the primary issue at hand rather than delve into sub plots of romantic liaisons of unbelievable kind (the rock star and the agricultural worker). To be fair the first half of the movie feels well researched, though more documentary like.
However, that proved to be the movie's undoing as well, as viewer is enticed to expect that the plot will lead towards a logical direction or at least stay true to its pragmatic approach. Instead, the viewer is greeted with Shahid Kapoor's character boldly proclaiming; (and I kid you not!!) "Ever since I have seen her, I no longer feel the need to do cocaine. A tune has begun playing at the back of my head ever since I have set my eyes upon her. I've got my mojo back." Voila! the abuser has been "cured" of his addiction (reminded me of Caprio's last monologue from The Basketball Diaries). If only American's knew of this "cure", they would not have been outpaced in their war on drugs. So there it goes, logic, premise and expectation from the movie, right out of the window. The rating of 5 is entirely on account of the first half, which achieves the lowest expected objective of educating the viewer about the existence of drug abuse issue.

UDTA PUNJAB is worth the hype. And not in terms of all the bad things said about it, it's genuinely an eye opener. It talks about the drug scenario in the youth of Punjab in a very relevant and realistic way. Following the three disclaimers initially, film is a pure truth under the camouflage of fiction.
UDTA PUNJAB revolves around the four lead characters connected with the substance abuse. Tommy Singh (Shahid Kapoor) is so high, under his fading success that you can't guess what he will do next. He is the direct result of what we consume and idolize. The persona, the crass, the love for hate, Tommy has it all. Shahid Kapoor's skin deep Tommy is a must watch. And so is Alia Bhatt. A Bihari migrant worker trying to make her life better, ends up in an unexpected mess. She takes you just by one strike, down and out. Alia Bhatt is not a pleasant surprise in such a different part, but an emerging talent which might level out all other to the ground. See it to believe it! Preet (Kareena Kapoor Khan) is a Doctor working at rehabilitation for the addicts is good and bold in her approach. She looks more bright with here curious eyes and that connects. And Sartaj Singh (Diljit Dosanjh) is a cop stuck between money and wrong. He is so true and innocent till his core and from there on what we see is solid performance. What a debut!
UDTA PUNJAB is choppy at places, but I love the transitions with the structure. The edit is not much to talk about, but it sets a pace with gripping background music. Second half is bit slow and few things looks like losing control. Songs are good and my personal favorite is Ikk Kudi
It's still there, humming somewhere.
Characters speaks out from real life. And Punjab is captured in such a realism, thank god, no mustard fields this time. Language is well taken care off, it's very true to the way we speak. And this is the most important aspect of UDTA PUNJAB for me, its authenticity! The unconventional story telling might not be for everyone, but it's intriguing. Technically UDTA PUNJAB is not in its best form which itself is a way to take story forward. Cheers to Abhishek Chaubey for this.
UDTA PUNJAB is neither a great film, not a path-breaking technical scorer. It's a mirror which some wanted to smash before we could see. The struggle has paid off with somewhat shady and choppy, but reality is stark. Let there be reflections!

With such admirable cast and a technical team that has proved itself over the years and a production house known for dishing out brilliance in film making, Udta Punjab is a massive let down. Perhaps by the sheer weight of the names involved and the controversy surrounded before its release.
Treading the path of drugs ca be risky. Traffic (2000) was a gem as it showed the effects of drug overuse among teens and elders alike and what catastrophic can be the outcome for such acts. It didn't preach. Udta Punjab too doesn't preach. But it does't kill your heart either, which Traffic did and there is no Knockout moments.
With over usage of Punjabi and vulgarities spewed right through the length of the running time, the movie already had its bearings removed to reach a wider audience. Add to that, the ones who can watch the movie may not be fully aware whether such a situation actually prevails like the way it is shown. With constant references to Punjab turning into a Mexico and Drugs being thrown to Indian side from Pakistan, Abhishek Chaubey tries to bring out a context of International Drug trade into the picture. Where the film loses the plot completely is when a doctor and ASI (played by Kareena and Diljit) makes a dash to expose the drug trade at political level. At one point Diljit even says Drug trade is Politics.
Apart from showing the Cops, Politicians and the Youth of Punjab in poor light at their respective stables taking advantage of the addiction or getting addicted to it, Udta Punjab doesn't do anything much to cash in on the situation to make more realistic attempt to showcase the issue. It rather takes a bland version of glossy pop star's redemption, a hockey player's foolhardy move to make some quick bucks and a cop and a doctor on a mission.

Bollywood has rarely attempted to make any movie on any social cause. Even more rarely, they have made a GOOD movie on any social cause. Honestly, I was hoping this to be one of those rare gems. But...like a Mirage - the movie's quality decreases as we watch it closely.
Here is how i rate a movie: Direction: 2 points Acting: 2 points Dialogues: 2 points Story: 2 points Editing: 1 points X-Factor: 1 point
Direction: 0.5 points: Director tried to induce effects of Gangs of Wasseypur and Haider by adding songs in the darkest of scenes. Love scenes are forced. I can never imagine a raped rural girl smooching some stranger out of pure anger.
Acting: 1 point: Shahid in one of his interviews said that he has never used drugs, so he wasn't sure how to act being high. This is sadly true, he looks like doing over acting. Alia is OK. Kareena showed very little emotions, and i am not sure whether that is how it was supposed to be. Diljit was best of the lot. 1.5 marks here.
Dialogues: 0.5 point: Character were more focused on saying Bh**ch** and Fuddu than actually talking in complete sentences. Gangs of Wasseypur had the perfect blend of expletives and dialogues. This movie seemed confused about how to approach the dialogues.
Story: 1.5 marks: I will give 1.5 marks to the makers only for attempting to make a movie which was on something meaningful. The story made little sense. Indian directors must understand and showing love in a movie is not a compulsory thing.
Editing: 0.5 points: The editing is so poor, that scenes seem to end disruptively. No mark here.
X-factor: 0 points: Sadly, Shahid and Alia were supposed to be the x-factor for the movie. But they ended up short of expectations.
Bottom line: Total 4 points. The only silver lining of the movie is its concept, but we shouldn't get blinded by that. The movie could have been a masterpiece, but it ended up being a movie which will be known mainly for its controversies. If you want to know about drug issues, watch a documentary.

Alright movie is average don't get your hopes up ..the only thing I like was acting by Dilgit & Kareena , the worst thing about movie is writing I mean first they try to exaggerate movie by showing three different stories, at the end finally when movie starts picking pace here it comes foolish move by Bollywood again I was like '' oh that's it'' I mean seriously , the whole thing viewers were waiting for you guys finished in minutes it was worth an half hour or more , but because of there foolishness they messed up by mixing two different stories the only relation was drugs & villains ,Seriously you guys could have made two different movies with more details & believe me if you focused on one part it would have been awesome. two stories both were incomplete ,Dilgit's one does have the good base but doesn't have the detailed ending part & Alia's one doesn't have the good base. '' they met both were running from bad guys & they were drug addicts... & they fall in love'' seriously. And don't get me started on Shahid's role he is great actor & he acted well to, but there was Something very wrong with his Character he was playing it was terrible ...I mean at first his songs lyrics were worse then you possibly imagine and he was dancer to , I understand makers trying to show us he was Rockstar & youth is picking his drug habits but please be fixed on your character how the hell he sang romantic song ... I can still go on but what's done is done.. there are many drugs scenes in the movie be advised not to bring children's with you, Excess was shown in the movie I don't think it was that bad as shown in the movie. Thanks for reading.
