I saw "Poms", starring Diane Keaton-Book Club, Mama's Boy; Jackie Weaver-The Disaster Artist, Silver Linings Playbook; Rhea Perlman-The Mindy Project_tv, Canadian Bacon; Pam Grier-Bless This Mess_tv, Above the Law and Bruce McGill-Rizzoli & Isles_tv, Timecop.
This is a comedy with mostly older actors doing tired jokes. My wife seemed to enjoy it more than I did, but she doesn't get out a lot. Diane moves to a retirement community and when she is told that she needs to join a club-which she has no interest in any of those that are available-she decides to start her own club and forms a cheer leading squad. Jackie, Rhea and Pam are some of the other members that join up to cheer on...well, I really don't know what they are cheering on. Bruce plays the security guard at the center that drives around in a golf cart-it's supposed to be funny when he gets in a hot pursuit. When Rhea's husband tells her that she can join the cheer leading squad over his dead body, the next scene is of the husband's funeral-I know, hilarious. It's not a bad movie, although kind of predictable, and I do like most of the actors. Like I said earlier, they are just tired jokes.
It's rated "PG-13" for language and sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 31 minutes.
It's not one that I would buy on DVD or even rent. If you really want to see it, I would wait until it comes to cable.

Somehow, a good point is made about cynicism. Cynical critics. As a career cynic, I melted at this flick. Too many fast transitions, but somehow, it worked.

The first trailer I saw months ago barely hinted at a cheerleading theme, it was more about the retirement community. "Have the time of life for the rest of your life". Now it's more about the cheerleading than I thought it would be but I really enjoyed it. I'm an amputee in a wheelchair and my 76 year old mother (who is extremely active) went to see it today. We both had a great time. There should be movies that aren't violence, explosions, and superheroes.

I've always wanted to know how life was in one of those active adult communities.

I read all the professional reviews after seeing Poms. They left me wondering if any one who reviewed this movie was over 60? It's about women facing their old age as they choose - some in isolation, some in denial, some willing to be inspired, some afraid to be seen as failures. But it is their independent choices that felt right to be, a 79 y/o woman.
There is nothing groundbreaking in the writing but most of us live ordinary lives. This acting out of the ordinary by seniors is what called to me. Too much focus on Diane Keaton? It's her story to tell.
Liked it, recommend it, could watch it again. Envy the gutsiness.

Great performances by Jacki Weaver and Diane Keaton. Best comedy in years.

The movie focuses too much on getting pregnant, liberalism, feminism and failures.
In reality people don't get into cheer leading for pregnancy they do it because they enjoy the showmanship and celebration.
The movie doesn't follow the real world experiences.

Other than The Hustle this has got to be the worst movie of the year candidate.

I really enjoyed this movie. Sure it's not bringing anything new to the genre, but I wasn't expecting it too be anything more than it was. All of the actresses have lived wonderful lives and have accomplished so much in their careers it's great to see such strong women in a movie. I could be a little biased, as I just recently lost my grandmother to cancer, and this movie reminded me why I loved her so much. This is like the perfect movie to watch when you're having a lazy day at the house and want something feel good while you stay cozy. Like a big warm blanket. In my opinion, those are some of the best movie out there.
