Poker Night

This film deserves more publicity than it is getting.. An impressive cast and a pretty good thriller in its own right.. The different stories that each cop puts forward on poker night are in itself pretty good. Each story is different in their own way and its really depicts how a legit detective team would handle the same case. The negatives that I have are really slight.. Maybe the plot could have been a bit more taut and focused on the killer a bit more. The acting is well handled.. I enjoyed the ending and I wish the team behind this all the best in their next venture. I went in without any expectations but the rating on IMDb (which I think it deserves at least a seven) and I liked it. If you are into thrillers, give it a try.

In this mix between Silence of the Lambs and Creep Show a rookie cop has to escape a serial killer whilst calling on the stories he was told during a poker night hosted by experienced police. The stories are played out in flash back, as are some of the serial killer's. The actual plot of the film isn't that spectacular and some of the cop stories amount to little less than a routine arrest. But they are told extremely well with plenty of colour just the right blend of drama and quirkiness. The punishments the killer dishes out make you wince but were very subtly handled. Elements of darkness are expertly counter balanced with lighter scenes and themes. Even the abstract way a group of paedophiles are depicted is surreal yet sinister. I found this to be a very enjoyable watch, not very many bells and whistles but if you like character acting and suspense you will love this..

Take snatch, seven and law and order SVU. Put em in a blender and thats what this movie is. Well written and well thought out this is an action mystery thriller with hints of every genre aforementioned. Jeter has been promoted to detective. Great RIght? Maybe so maybe not. He is coached by older cops and given advice through their stories of previous busts while playing poker all the while we see jeter in flashbacks being tortured by a mystery man.{As well as jeter playing the cops in the flashbacks} This type of film making has been around for quite a while yet here is done superbly by a director who has seasoned actors and a great script. The camera work is a bit shaky yet the script and story telling leave nothing to chance. In the end jeter has to solve things on his own and that's where my spoilers will end This will undoubtedly become an underground cult hit and deserves at least 2 screenings. Bonus Points If you can identify the masked man straight away. I did but only because I know his work

Yeah it is different, That is the only thing that kept me watching it until the end. There are some things I liked, like that cool mask, or the cool villain, or that nice story that is badly written, and so badly directed. The man came up with a nice story, then he ruined it by directing it, and writing script. Honestly, he just had to tell that idea to someone and it could be great movie. Ron Pelrman is not fit to be an actor. His acting is too painful for my senses. And others could not do better because that script, that script, that script. Come on, that script. My grandmother could do better than that. Even scenery was OK (in some way). Bad cop with an innocent face, villain that no one could kill, and it is not that they did not try, they did, a lot. No, in the end, forgettable movie, i wish it was not, i really do, but it is. How can someone say the acting was good (as i saw someone wrote). The acting was all but good. Maybe that person only watches low rated movies. Stil it is a 4, but only for trying. Maybe someone will make better remake. I just wrote this review because the people need to see the truth. As I saw here, only those who liked the film wrote the review, and that is not fair, it needs some dose of subjectivity that I am offering. Bad movie, sorry guys.

To me, I watched this film mainly because a friend highly recommended this film, and partly because of the rating here is like 6 out of 10 which apparently not the worst >< Anyways, get back to business. Great things about the film: 1. Setting of the film is pretty refreshing, a little bit feels like a stage in a theatre 2. Being able to tell the story pretty clearly. 3. Damn, those legs of Ms. Sage are fine!!!! Things I personally hated: 1. couple things feel like ripping off from some other WELLKNOWN good films Such as: a) Batman: Begins ---"scarecrow" which happened to be the villain AGAIN, like really? Can't you be more creative? b) Kickass --- the whole Mr. Alby being the mentor & the screenplay, just feels Kickass to me. c) No Country for Old Men ---- "We just pretend they don't exist " to me, that just sound just the point of NCfOM trying to express. This also shows a bit of too much cynicism. d) Silence of the lamb & Se7en ----- The room full of pictures of dead girls, does it remind you some things from those two films? 2. Overall the storyline is told clearly, but some does not make sense. 3. Some scenes feel too childish for a thriller. 4. The stories told at the other officers had absolutely nothing to do with the film like at all, just saying "don't ever give up", "ask for a kiss" They can be replaced with other things to make the movie more intense. Oh well, the film is called the Poker Night, isn't it? So I understand but I still think not a good choice of storytelling. Like the guy didn't even use any advice from these cops in any way, then why needed to tell the stories? 5. Storyline is a bit messy as the film just keeps back and forward and back and forth etc, just a little bit needless and pointless. Overall, 3 out of 10 is definitely as high as I can rate this film. If not, only lower not higher.Sorry friend...

I walked into this film knowing nothing about it and expecting absolutely nothing. It was a wonderful and delicious surprise. Lately wifey and I have been feasting on the first two seasons of Hannibal... So slipping into "Poker Night" was an extremely snug fit for our current mindset. Its narrative felt very Fight Club, its presentation in ways reminded me of Boondock Saints, and its delivery kept me very engaged once I allowed the story to unfold. The cast was top notch, the story itself was wonderfully crafted, and presents itself with a night at the poker table while detectives share horror stories with one another... As these detectives share in their experiences over an evening of poker (that takes place in the past), the main character is abducted (in the present) and has to figure a way out of being killed by a madman. With a blending of "tales from the force" and an immediate threat... The story does well presenting "Past and Present" while running poker night in parallel with a plot of sadistic revelation through the eyes of a madman. All of the side tales and mini stories go far to keep you interested in what comes next, dare I say, even as much as the main story currently unfolding does. People giving this title a 1 out of 10 are obviously a little too pampered with their films (sign me up for your club of awesomeness please), and perhaps, bias to their own tastes for it. Primarily being... I felt this film had a strong script, it also had a great team, and the conclusion made "evil me" smile a bit as well. This will most certainly be an overlooked film of 2014, but for what few of us enjoy a good story with some excellent twists and turns, this will certainly be a great detour to embark on and enjoy. Terrible show, lots of bad acting especially the main actor who looks like a useless kid thats in high school. story line was bad, trying to give the wow effect like other movies like shutter island but failed terribly. would not recommend anyone to waste their time to watch this. U will regret. tried to be mind f@23king but turned out to be just sheet. The whole show is illogical and many of the parts were about him making stupid decisions again and again contradicting with the main theme of the movie of not making same stupid mistakes which pisses me off even more. At the beginning i thought that this movie would be poor and i wouldn't be satisfied with it, what happens is that the movie reveals itself very interesting... the characters, the places, the scenes everything was perfect and all the movie was about thinking and thinking, when you see this kind of movie you never get sick of it because all the story is interesting. This movie is not about a cop that spent all is life searching for a criminal and at the end the bad guy is killed, it's much more than than... at every second of the movie u stay stuck to it and u never want it to stop.. just amazing, one of the best i've ever seen that involves cops.

Was I watching something different. So many positive reviews. If you watch it, ask yourself why does he keep wearing the mask on the front cover. Nothing more need be said.
