I never quite understand why people feel the need to over analyse every movie they ever see and look for some deeper hidden meaning, not every movie needs to be Arthouse and edgy. Sometimes it's good to just sit back and enjoy something less heavy and enjoy it for what it is.. light entertainment. This fell under that category for me and really hit the spot. Funny in parts, great actors and likeable quirky characters and some sweet moments.

I watched this movie last night on my TV cable. Thank god I don't have to wasted money on it, since it is the worst romantic comedy movie ever. I turned off the channel after half of the movie because cant stand the sexism of the writing. It is so bad its gives me headache. And I already know how it will end, with the girl leaving her bf for this man. The lead characters has no chemistry, and many characters are there for their name only without any contribution for the story. From the first scene, the story depicts a low life main character who views women as sex object, I hate him. Then he met this gorgeous girl who has a bf and fall in love. How cliché is that? Chris Evan an Monica has no chemistry at all, I fell no sympathy at all for his character, and I don't feel sympathy at all for the girl either. They are both cheating snobs who deserve each other. A sexual predator and a cheating girl. What romantic about that at all? For real? If it is a real world, we can imagine that the next thing will happened is a 911 call for domestic violence. Since the man only view woman as sexual object of course. This movie is sexism and describe the reason why you should stay away from guys like the main character. They are sociopath and only cared about themselves. Avoid it and skip it whenever it pops in your TV cable.

Review: I really wasn't that impressed with this film because it seemed to be going nowhere, right from the very beginning. Chris Evans plays a womanising writer who is struggling to come up with an idea for a Rom-Com. His agent promises him an action movie as his next project, if he produces the script but he is having problems with his personal love life because he can't get the woman that he really loves. The woman, played by Michelle Monaghan, already has a boyfriend so she becomes best friends with Chris Evans who can't get her out of his mind. His best friends try to help him through his emotional situation but his usual charms don't seem to work on Monaghan. I personally got fed up with the movie because Chris Evans just seems to be whining and moaning from one scene to the next. The director tried his best to keep the movie fresh by creating scenes from what is going on Evans crazy mind, but it's a basic Rom-Com which is corny and not that funny. The whole love story is quite boring, which is a shame because I liked the chemistry between the different characters. I was hoping for something a little different from this film but I struggled to stay interested and the constant whinging got on my nerves. Disappointing!
Round-Up: I doubt that this small movie will damage Chris Evans career, after playing Captain America and the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, but it does show that he's not that great when it comes to Rom-Com's or anything without action in it. At 33, he must be laughing all the way to the bank because he also plays a big part in the Avengers franchise so this project must have pretty small compared to what he is used to. I'm just scared that he will get stuck when the big budget movies dry out. Personally, I like his cocky and self confident style of acting but he plays the same type of characters in all of his roles. He does show some emotion in the Captain America franchise and I really liked him in Injustice but he needs to come away from the comedies and action movies for a while to show that he has some more tools in the box.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their Rom-Com's about a writer who meets a woman at a party and falls head over heals in love with her but she is promised to another so he tries his best to win her heart. 4/10

This movie left me speechless it was so bad. It took me a while to be able to review it since it was so bad I had no idea where to begin.
Well first of all a DOUCHBAG of a guy, yes I do not root for this @ss#0le at all, pretty much uses/lies to/abuses women. Why? Because his mother left him as a kid? REALLY? LOL MOST people have no real parents these days. Divorce rate is 50%. You MOSTLY have 1 parent most of the time.
SO.... the writers EXPECT the viewer to root for this self-obsessed spoiled brat!? The main character is suffering from what best can be called "Entitled spoiled whiny stupid white boy syndrome." You know those guys that expect the world to revolve around THEM! Wow just disgusting.....
He basically USES women as physical objects for his own gain ONLY, then whines/rants about how he has all these problems. So....everyone should care about you and no one else? Don't these women have problems as well? What about their feelings? Oh right sexism....who cares, just terrible.
As always with "Entitled spoiled whiny stupid white boy syndrome" the subject just expects everything to fall into his lap. He takes a liking to a girl at an event, RIGHT AFTER insulting all the women at said event to be repulsive...wow. She is in a relationship. So what does our subject do, steal her away! Wow classic "Entitled spoiled whiny stupid white boy syndrome!"
Here is what the writers do, ACTUALLY MAKE THE WORLD REVOLVE AROUND HIM. A woman would NEVER go with a guy that INSULTED her. They make her bf a worse man than our main subject. And the girl that is apparently 'in love' with our subject helps him to get this girl? Wow talk about wishful thinking. These things never happen...
More gross things going on in this movie, everyone smokes...disgusting the encouragement of MORE bad behavior. Drink all your problems away...what? Just when it could not get any worse it does! He plans to ruin her wedding! Wow and of course she does not go through with it...random. Bad writing again. This whole movie is warped beyond any realism. NONE of these characters are real. They are even worse than a FANTASY movie. I mean like Harry Potter, at least the characters can exist minus all the magic....
I am assuming it was movies/media like this that encouraged shooters like Elliot Rodger to kill. "Why don't women come up to me?" He actually said it 'happened in the movies.' How sad movies like these exist and some people take them seriously. ENOUGH Hollywood, we see though your (rap. Stop making TOTALLY unrealistic movies. Yes, it's a 'rom-com' but this is too big a pill of lies to swallow!

A screenwriter (Chris Evans) is assigned to write the screenplay of a romantic comedy by his agent Bryan (Anthony Mackie), but he has difficulties to deal with the theme since he was abandoned by his mother when he was a boy. He unsuccessfully tries to have information about love from his friends that are also writers. When he meets a beautiful woman (Michelle Monaghan) in a charity event, he is shaken by the unknown feeling and they become friends. Further, he discovers that she is engaged of a man that represents stability for her.
"Playing It Cool" is an annoying, silly, boring and disappointing romantic comedy with an awful story of a man that does not believe in love due to a traumatic experience in his childhood. Indeed it is a collection of clichés. The characters are shallow and not well developed. The beautiful smile of Michelle Monaghan is the best that this film can offer. There are also many cameos only to give their names to the credit. My vote is three.

there are two movies that almost run parallel with each other with obvious identical similarity, this 'playing it cool' is almost like the other most pathetically boring 'lovesick'. i really don't know if these screenplay writers are just roommates renting the same apartment together, or they are just renters next to each other, or on the same floor. but these two screenplays are just as bored as each other, and the difference is so little, only the storyline shuffled a little bit. but obviously, the budget of 'playing it cool' is several times bigger than the 'lovesick', less roles, compensated by mucho kids players instead. but both so-called 'romantic comedy' turned out to be so boring, so exaggerated, so pretentious, and so contrite, and both should never be approved to be produced. the investors of these two movies should have give their money to the charities, at least the money won't be wasted like this.

'Playing It Cool' is probably one of the best rom-coms released lately. Its got a fresh story about an author who does not know anything about love, but is asked to write a love story. So, he searches for love in the stories that he hears about love but doesn't truly get until he meets this wonderful woman. Only flaw, she is in a relationship. Michelle monaghan and Chris Evans give a good performance in these roles. The story is told in a narrative fashion, and the story unfolds in a different way and continues so till the end. Tbe movie is sure to impress a lot, with good humor and romance in the right amounts. It is worth a watch over the weekend and will not fail to impress. However, that said, the execution of the story could have been better. Its a shame that movies like these garner very less appreciation or recognition from the audience, even though they are much better than most highly publicized and hyped movies. FINAL VERDICT-DEFINITELY WORTH A WATCH.

We won't even know their names. "Me" (the Narrator) is a movie scriptwriter who gets assigned to write a script for a rom-com. He does not exactly have an easy time writing this since he has not really been in love. Then one day, our reluctant romantic meets "Her", the ideal girl of his dreams. However, she happened to be already engaged to a "Stuffy" guy. With his circle of friends around him giving him "sage" advice, will our Narrator get his script written. and win Her over in the end?
The script of "Playing It Cool" by Chris Schafer and Paul Vicknair is smart and witty as modern rom-coms go, chock-full of nuggets of armchair "wisdom" about the relationship between men and women. Under its original title of "A Many Splintered Thing," this script actually found itself into the Black List, a yearly survey of the "most liked" (though not necessarily "best") motion picture screenplays not yet produced. Other famous graduates of this Black List were "Slumdog Millionaire," "The King's Speech," "Argo," and "American Hustle." Admittedly, this one is not exactly at those levels though.
"Me" was played by Chris Evans, whom I have not seen as a regular guy on screen for a long time since he began donning superhero costumes. After seeing him in all these major action films, it took a while to get used to seeing him playing an ordinary lovestruck guy. He gets to wear various costumes as his imagination runs with various characters, including a female one. He was actually quite good as this charmingly unsure character, sweet-talking not only to his co-star, but also to his female fans in the audience.
"Her" was played by the very attractive Michelle Monaghan, whom I only remember as the female love interest in action films like "Mission: Impossible 3" and "Source Code". This girl really has an arresting presence, you would not wonder why Evan's character falls hard for her. The two of them look good together and have a smart chemistry between them that makes this screen romance work.
The supporting actors (Topher Grace, Aubrey Plaza, Luke Wilson) playing the Narrator's unconventional writer friends add a lot of color in the story as they discuss his love problem from different points of view. Evans was actually reunited with his a couple of his fellow Marvel superhero buddies here. "Mr. Fantastic" Ioan Gruffudd was funny as he plays Her's fiancée Stuffy. "Falcon" Anthony Mackie was sleazy as he plays Bryan, the Narrator's manager with a thing for Malaysian women. Matthew Morrison and Ashley Tisdale have cameos as the actors in the rom-com Evans was trying to finish.
In his full-length feature film debut as director, Justin Reardon was fortunate to have gathered an impressive cast of young actors to bring the crackling script to life. It is still a rom-com though, not exactly my thing, but this is not bad. It still follows the same basic formula though that we have seen time and again. However, there was interesting storytelling technique, crisp cinematography, snappy dialogue, and quirky visuals to keep audiences' attention up to that final romp across San Francisco at the end. 6/10.

All I want from a romantic comedy is to believe the characters are falling in love - and with this film I do. Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan's characters I could watch all day long ♥ (and not just to watch Chris Evans all day, however I could do that too). There are some sadder, more emotional moments too which only invests you further into the storyline and their relationship.
Am in love with the supporting cast too. The banter of his quirky friendship group provides varying opinions on love and what it means to different people, but also adds lots of fun to the film too. I imagine most people watch romcoms for a warm feeling inside - I definitely got one :)
