Papurika is like a symphony-vague and able to exhibit a certain pleasure(/displeasure) of the uneasiness, developing, and able to grant a resolution at the end.

I just got done with seeing this movie at the SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) and have to say that this film is absolutely gorgeous. The film itself is a roller-coaster ride of pure entertainment. The storyline, music, and the animation does not let the viewer get off until the credits start rolling. Paprika was originally conceived by author Yasutaka Tsutsui who is renowned for his futuristic tales, but it took his friend Satoshi Kon director of such films as Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers to bring bring his dream to life. Paprika is the film to watch in theatres right now. see the film with your friends because everyone is going to want to be entertained for once and this film does the job. I don't care if you are not a fan of Japanese animation you have to see this film and then wait for the DVD so you can watch it again or go back for another showing. Don't forget to check out the soundtrack composed solely by Susuma Hirasawa.

Rarely we see a brilliant idea getting executed this efficiently. The transistion from dream and reality done very cleverly. Always good to see the character of a strong woman. Dont wander else you might miss whats happening and lose track.

I just saw it at the Hawaii International Film Fest, and I liked it very much. I've enjoyed Kon's other films, and this one shares elements with Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress (lots of high-paced chase sequences that make the film fly, but not as many as Millennium). Like previous commenters said, it is quite weird, but it gives you a lot to think about if you chose, and if you're not into analyzing films, there are plenty of beautiful visuals to feats your eyes on. In a Q&A after the screening, Kon said that this would be the last of his films mixing dreams and reality, and hinted that the ending could be a topic of his next work.

Great. I loved the message, animation, surrealist rollercoaster of what's real and what's not. Made me realize my love for Satoshi Kon.

On the surface, this film is sci-fi, but beneath it lies an Orwellian subtext on the issues of privacy and the nature of one's humanity revealed through dreams. Paprika is a work of art. Sure the plot is a little similar to the 1st Matrix movie, but it's damn far more entertaining than the sequels put together on many levels for three reasons: 1. Story is a tad confusing but VERY easy to follow. 2. It doesn't have any martial arts and 3. the idea of using dream therapy to cure one's inner turmoil is a great concept that's cleverly explored and there's a good amount of character development and humor too. I'm not surprised "Paprika" is lighthearted despite having some dark moments. The final battle was especially gripping so if you like your anime with sci-fi and surrealism rolled into one, then check Paprika out.
