NH 10- 2015 Director: Navdeep Singh Director Navdeep Singh is back with another gritty thriller. Starring Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam, NH10 is a thriller based on real-life incidents that exposes us to the harsh reality of life. NH 10 is definitely not meant for typical bollywood audience. It is something different. Something combined with fear, love and how a young woman cope with such troublesome situation. When I downloaded the songs I was not expecting the movie to be SO terrifically awesome because the songs were not very catchy but after watching the movie I was speechless. Year 2014 turned the tables and there were many directors who actually played the role of being feminist and made a lot brilliant movies highlighting women and their issues in our society. In Urban areas of countries like India Pakistan Bangladesh etc Honor killing is considered as a pride but unfortunately it is called HEIGHT OF BEING IGNORANT. Performance-Wise: Anushka Sharma, who also produced the film, delivers a huge, dramatic performance. She displays helplessness with sincerity, but breathers fire when it comes to destroying the villains. This is undoubtedly most power packed performance. Neil Bhoopalam is fairly good in the limited role he appears in. Darshan Kumaar is effortlessly wicked, enacting the chief villain with command. On the whole, 'NH10' is Tough Enough!

There has been a huge paradigm shift with how the subject of "attacks against women" has been handled (particularly in India). While the focus should be on finding and rectifying the many causes, concerned entities are satisfying themselves with easy blame games and brainless attempts at solving, such as this film. Released just over a week after the controversial and incorrectly named documentary "India's Daughter" flocked the media, NH10 is a social commentary that neither inspires nor deciphers. A couple (Sharma & Bhoopalam) witness an aggressive incident of honor killing during a holiday trip. Abashing causes the ubiquitous male ego to splutter, and what follows is a serious commentary on crime in a morally corrupt rural India. Basically, the film is a chronicle about attacks and harassment against women that start from the core (national interiors) and spreads to the urbane neighborhood. It is surprising to learn that superstitional crime is spearheaded by a matriarch and that women are not at only the receiving end, but are even a part of it. It will be wise to conclude that Gandhi's ahimsa (violence) is the best way to look at the ongoing mishappenings around us, even if it means letting your ego go and sustain mental suffering. The terrorizing experience when an ordinary person gets embroiled in crime is greatly captured. But Mr Singh's amateur direction is evident throughout the narration. Suspense is created solely with the help of manipulative score and good photography. And while the themes are interesting, the screenplay may repel its sensitive audience. Which means, the intensity of crime elements will not be suitable for a person who enters the hall expecting typical Bollywood. Neil Bhoopalam is the new Arjun Rampal, with a wooden face, version 2. Anushka Sharma definitely steals the limelight, and I have to say she strikes the right chord with her maiden production (only if she had paid more attention to the originality and closure of the script). Deepti Naval's brief role was like Anil Kapoor's forgotten one in Mission: Impossible 4 (2011). Alas, the chronicle is narrated of a world which is a mixture of reality and artificiality. Since the beginning, the screenplay tries inventive ways to base its construction, but eventually falters. How else can one explain the procuring of firearm for women's safety as a way of disentanglement? And the film continues to work itself on fool's ideas. There is some more sermoning on the caste system in India, but it takes you nowhere. While the ugly side of India is captured well with obscene inscriptions behind restroom doors and decrepit walls that we often see in trains and elsewhere, the film loses traction when it turns into a revenge drama, hoping to provide a solution I told you about. It, thus ends up in an abyss of illogic and mindless pudding. And the aftermath is left to us, perhaps to increase our misery already pumped up by the highly uncomfortable watch. BOTTOMLINE: Advocating criminality in the name of women empowerment is ridiculous and an incorrect way of tackling the subject, and for that matter, NH10 does only that. Thus, while the film is a gripping thriller per se, it shouldn't be taken seriously, and thankfully for the way it is made, it most probably will not. 5/10. Can be watched with a typical Indian family? NO Violence/Gore: Infinity | Smoking: Mediocre | Sex/Obscenity/Vulgarity: No

Let me keep this short because it has been some time and I feel a little awkward writing about a film after such a long break. But then this is a film that is about jolting you out of the comfort zone. It is quite difficult to write about NH10 without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it yet. Not because there is a twist in the end or some suspense that will blow your mind. But because one would feel hesitant to deprive would-be viewers of the feelings they will experience first-hand while seeing it without any prior expectations. So I'd definitely suggest that you don't read any reviews before watching the film. Just take my word for it and see it. Only word of caution is that this cannot be stomached by the faint-hearted. For those who have seen it, here's what I thought. The film aims to bring out the ugliness of the world around us and how surprisingly close it is to our everyday life. The story of a uber-modern young couple from Gurgaon, who could be at home anywhere in the world. Life is good, future is bright and they are so much in love and nothing can ever go wrong. But then one day it just does and the consequences are absolutely disastrous. Without going into more details of the story of the film, what worked for me is the ease with which the film makes you experience what the protagonists are going through - a variety of feelings and emotions like disgust, fear, tension, desperation, anger, hurt, helplessness, and even adrenalised vengefulness. Even the warmth and love between the two main characters is beautifully portrayed. The setup is extremely ominous and the buildup to the climax had me literally straightening up my recliner seat and perched on the edge. Several times I could hear stifled groans in the audience wanting to shout out at the characters to 'look out!' or 'Run!' The performances, the script and the direction are the fundamentals which drive this superb film. Their strength makes it absolutely unnecessary to have any outlandish camera angles or loud jerky music. In fact the background score is almost non-existent and the camera angles realistic. To me this achievement is the film's biggest positive. A thriller in the truest sense, NH10 gets under your skin and stays there for hours.

Driven by amazing performance of Anushka Sharma, a cameo by Deepti Naval and well directed by Navdeep Singh, NH10 is an exciting two hour journey, touching upon the rural Haryana, honor killings, patriarchal mindset and women empowerment. Ignoring the poor and senseless build up of the story, where most of the Bollywood movies are weak at, once into the jungle, movie is full of twist and turns. Anushka Sharma, evidently, has put her heart into the movie. With intense dramatic acting, she has taken the movie on to her shoulders completely. Neil Bhoopalam is, unfortunately, forgotten after some time in the movie as it revolves around Anushka Sharma and her struggle with the predators. However, he does well in his bit. Darshan Kumaar does a noticeable job with enough screen presence and is quite good, given his second movie. Deepti Naval lives up to her reputation. The length of the movie is well managed as you cannot keep it exciting with a typical Bollywood length of 2.5 hours. The climax makes a very strong statement with hunters becoming the hunted. However, the movie draws attention to the solid thick line between the India of malls, multiplexes, flyovers, working women and the India of dirt roads, khap panchayats, honor killings and patriarchy.

I am amazed! Simply amazed. Amazed at the change Bollywood is going through. After almost a decade long stint of ultra-idiotic movies galore, Bollywood is coming to sense! Or rather, the new movie-makers are trying to defy the convention. Whatever the reason, this change is sweet. NH10 is not only a story of a journey gone wrong, but a very realistic portrayal of social evils which happen in the Indian society and where the check is not governed by law, as the people of law also come from the same ranks. The more amazing part was how the movie showed that not only men, but women too are responsible for those regressive social evils, and how the women dictate that mindset to the younger generation. The movie is intense as well as fast-paced. You'll be pleasantly amazed at the number of songs filmed upon the 'hero' and the 'heroine' - ZERO. The direction is flawless, as the whole setup gets to you and makes yourself a part of it; all terrifying and frustrating and mind- numbing. Neil Bhoopalam does an awesome job as the big-city guy with an idealistic view. But the praises go to Anushka Sharma. She is as good as an actor gets with the role of a modern girl who carries the trepidation of an unwanted event, the disgust for unjust mindset and people, and the bravery of a woman. I am contented with the way women have started being represented in Bollywood movies and how Bollywood is shedding its skin of stereotyping women with second-rate roles, molestation and objectification. Loved the movie. Do not watch it for the 'Falana out of 5' stars. Watch it for the change. If we are not going to change our viewership choices, we have no right to blame Bollywood for producing idiotic movies. P.S - Dear Censor Board members and especially Mr Pehlaaj Nihlani, Muting a 'Hindi gaali' and cutting scenes from a movie which portrays a much more heinous side of the society we are living in is so hilarious, I could just spit on you while laughing. Banning 'cuss words' in a movie such as this has only ridiculed the heart of the movie and reduced its impact. The 'thoo' of hypocrisy is on you.

First, let me say I am NOT Indian, but I have watched Bollywood movies for over 10 years--a lot of them. Next, let me say that last year I saw 92 (yes, 92) movies in the cinema--that's not counting movies on DVD or on TV. Now…NH10 is the BEST movie I have seen of all the movies I saw last year and so far this year. I think the comments about it being copied from Eden Lake (which I've not seen) or other movies in this genre might be true to some extent, but that's not fair. Shakespeare copied a lot of his plots from Boccaccio's Decameron. So what? So there have been a lot of other movies about a gang terrorizing a couple? So what? It's how you do it that counts. It's like a football play (American!)--you can have 100 teams run the same play, but one team does it best, and they win. NH10 wins. Yes, you knew something bad was going to happen…but when? How? To whom? And the false leads at the beginning of the film kept me in suspense. Of COURSE Arjun was an idiot-- that's the formula of these types of movies. If everyone were alert and smart, you wouldn't have a good horror movie! But I have to say I almost yelled at the screen, "No, you idiot, don't leave your gun in the car!" It's all in the execution. Anushka is one of my favorites, I have to admit. She always plays the strong woman, and Meera was certainly a strong woman. To be the center of the movie and on screen for almost every minute is quite an achievement, and she did it beautifully. It took a lot of skill to keep the suspense up throughout the movie, but it succeeded. There was really no way to tell until the last few minutes how it would all end--it could have gone several different directions. Also I have to applaud the director--and Anushka the producer--for leaving the studio and going out into real world. The Italians discovered this c. 1960, and Indian films would be much better if more of them did it. I know there are difficulties in filming in a crowded city, but there are ways

Arjun (neil) and Meera (anushka) are a happy couple with plush jobs in a big city but Meera suffers a jolt when an attempt to molest her takes place. In a bid to take her mind off that incident, Arjun decides to take her to a nice place to celebrate her birthday. They take the NH10 and it is here that they witness an honor killing led by Satbir (Darshan Kumar) and a group. Things take a turn with cops not cooperating and the killers after Arjun and Meera. At one point, Arjun gets deeply wounded and it is only Meera who has to take care of things. What happens after that forms the rest. The director has come up with a hard hitting storyline and while the presentation was nice, the narrative was engaging in parts. The dialogues were filled with expletives but they fit the scenario. The script was average to above and the screenplay was good. The background score was intense and one song was worth listening. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Editing was upto the mark. Costumes didn't have much work while the art department was realistic. Neil Bhoopalam gave a subdued performance and made his presence felt. Anushka Sharma has evolved as a great performer in this one, she is spectacular, and to watch out for in the climax. Another revelation comes in the form of Darshan Kumar, he was superb. Deepti Naval was superb. The evil of honor killings still continue in the north India and it is tough to deal with such hardened people. But the way the principal characters deal with it has been done well. The first half goes on a breezy note with elements of some romance, some fun and some lighter moments. The interval bang was a twist. The second half gets into a completely serious mode and there is a lot of gore and blood which is raw. Overall, this is a film that talks about issues that plague India today. Things like Caste issues,Honour killing, and the need for women empowerment. And even minor loopholes in the script, and predictability withstanding NH10 is riveting, a fine film that needs to be watched for its positive message for women. Dir Navdeep Singh has made a real film, a film of todays times, but the films violence will be hard to stomach for some, but he needs to applauded for such a gripping, fast and raw film.Watch this film because it gives all the right messages of how India needs to change for the better. 3.25/5* or 6.5/10

Well, this is a good try to venture into a new territory , which is covered by some of the Hollywood counterparts. Anushka's performance was good. Darshan Kumaar was amazing. Unbelievable that he played the husband of Mary Kom. In NH10, his character is in complete contrast to the his earlier role. However, he has done a fantastic job. Reminds me of the time I saw Manoj Bajpai as Bhiku Mhatre, and then the contrast irritating salesman- ish role he played in Kaun. Now to the movie. There is really no story as such. Most of the movie Anushka is running with the guys behind her in the dead of the night. We see light right at the end of the movie. That's about it. They tried to create some tense moments, some were successful, some were nothing great. I am not sure why this movie got high ratings. I guess it must be because of the performances of Anushka and Darshan. Overall, if you are curious, just wait till you download ...uh hmm.. sorry, I mean till you rent the DVD.

A nightmarish vacation packed with gruesome action and pulsating thrills. Its a horror-thriller which showcases the inequality of women in our society and the ill treatment dished out to them for deviating from the norms of "society". A slow paced action after an explosive opening. Gripping plot with good support cast. Dialogues and language are only for adults. A good watch not the usual merry go round off beat comedies thrown at your face. It's in tune with Hollywood thrillers although it is not well paced. However a good watch, Anuskha seemingly does well in her city girl avatar however, doesn't have that wild streak in her. Grab a bite and join the fun, start the engines and dive on NH10. Highlighting the our social-evils the movie succeeds in reforming the minds of our youth.
